It's Multiple Choice!

Well it's Friday, so I thought I'd ask everyone what their favorite whiskey is, and how you like to drink it.

I admit I like my bourbon and/or rye on ice with something sweet added to the drink. But am pondering better quality bourbons, and ryes, and maybe a good scotch to drink neat so as to cut my caloric intake back a few notches.

Packy I'm partial to the hot toddy - or my new "whiskey cocktail" - which is a liberal amount of whiskey, seltzer water to fill the old fashioned glass - and a liberal shot of bitters.

Woodford Reserve is a favorite of mine. I almost always have ice in my bourbon. All of the top shelf bourbons are pretty good...I just hate to be spendy about my alcohol most of the time.

Bulleit Bourbon is pretty good and reasonably priced. Woodford Reserve is very good also.

You have moonshine in the Poll - Junior Johnsons Midnight Moon Apple Pie Moonshine is one of the best you'll every try. You can sip it neat, warm or cold. But it is deceptively strong!

I see a lot of the bbq shows doing mixed drinks with bitters, what is it and how does it taste?

I find I drink less of the expensive bourbons (I drink those neat) than I do with the cheap stuff (that I drink with soda or juice and/or other crap).

Makers Mark is great for sipping neat and serving to friends and guests. Famous Grouse is for me alone. :)

Yes, Packy, you left out Canadian Whiskey from your poll. I used to drink Canadian, but now days it's 151 Dark Rum, on the rock, with what I try to cut with half water. It's an acquired taste.

Sorry about that, maybe one of the mod's could add that into the poll?

You know multiple choice means you can select more than one response of course.

Yes, I did that intentionally so that members could chose what they prefer. When I'm playing cards with friends I drink a very fine single malt scotch that they brought back from Scotland, too bad it's close to $200 a bottle here as I''m particularly fond of the stuff!

Now running for Emperor.
Scotch is the correct category.
This is the answer:

For fun, mix a little BenRiach into this stuff. Mmmmm...

I voted for two: scotch and moonshine.

Mood dependent.

Favorite scotch is Glenmorangie 12 year with a port barrel finish.

Favorite shine is TN local.

There is a great bourbon, W.L. Weller Special Reserve, that is outstanding. I do that every now and again. Hard to find. Very reasonably priced.

eta: scotch: drink on the rocks with ice cubes made from filtered well water

moonshine? lemonade and ice

Angostura Bitters, Packy... it tastes a little herbal and smooths out the bite of a bourbon, rye or whiskey. It's also a digestif - good after a heavy filling meal. A little goes a long way.

Single malts & I had a fling once upon a time. I still really like them, but hadn't considered adding to Jamesons (another go-to). Maybe some night I'm feeling frisky... tonight I think I'll stick with my hot toddy: whiskey, heaping teaspoon of honey, boiling water & lemon juice to taste. Picked up a cold in my travels this week.

When I drank (35 years ago) it was low priced Scotch. It was $5 a fifth with Pennsylvania taxes.

Jeez we invented it and don't even get a mention, where's the Irish Whiskey, Uisce Beatha - Water of Life ;)

Mea culpa, okay!!! As you can see from my poll, my experiences with the different "types" of whiskey is quite limited. NOTE I almost put in tequila for kicks and giggles, but that will be for another thread/poll come next Friday.

Most any Kentucky Bourbon is rather decent. Jim Beam and Evan Williams are moderately priced bourbon whiskeys that manage to go down quite nicely and stay down in the process.

Personally, I find "America's favorite" Tennessee whisky, Jack Daniels, to be wildly overrated and wildly overpriced. Jack Daniels evokes the aroma and the taste best likened to model airplane glue. Seriously, it is just horrible in my opinion, honed over decades of whisky consumption. I am surprised the EPA has not issued an environmental impact statement on this nefarious product, as would be expected with any other styrene cement.

Moving on,

Elevating Kentucky bourbon to it's highest gastronomic plateau however would have be the small batch champion Maker's Mark in my humble but learned opinion. Maker's Mark is very robust yet flavorful offering a tremendous barrel persona along with evocative notes of vanilla and wood smoke.

Serve this delightful labor of love two fingers high along with two ice cubes.

A pairing made in culinary heaven is Maker's Mark and a thick bone-in rib-eye steak seared over a wood fired grill.

Prossit!

Canadian Mist drinker here, but lately it's been a shot of Bailey's (Irish Cream) in decaf coffee after dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.

When it gets warmer, I'll go back to drinking my one weekly beer on the back porch.

Don't drink bourbon...

They take out the fusel oils (3-, 4, and 5-Carbon alcohols) during distillation, but PUT THEM BACK IN to the final product. You'd have to LIKE fully-avoidable hangovers to drink that stuff. Better to drink Scotch, or good-quality vodka or gin instead.

If you like bitters - Scrappys Lime Bitters, a good ginger ale/ginger beer and Bulleit Bourbon makes a tasty treat

Just put the ginger ale over ice - add Bulleit and bitters to taste. Enjoy.

I don't drink anymore but when I did, Royal Crown was my poison of choice. With a coke which I don't drink anymore either, lol. Once in a great while it was bourbon but that never stayed down and I hated myself the next day. Another reason I don't drink anymore. Too old to be kneeling in the bathroom in front of the porcelain thing.

OH, I forgot Wild Turkey......that was nice but it also never stayed down. Now a nice Mudslide works ok for the tum tum. Must be the milk?

Can't really afford to buy a lot so my experience mostly ranges from Jck and Beam. I found a few months ago I like Dickel better.

Single malt scotch. Go to is Glenfiddich 15, (always neat) but starting to explore the Islay's.

Agree that a person always needs to keep some Bailey's around, as a shot in the coffee or cocoa can help ya get through a cold winter.
