CHAT What was the worst food you had to eat as a kid

I used to think that I hated most veggies, given that my mom could burn water, but I took some free cooking classes when I went to college and found out that I liked all the veggies that we grew in the Great Lakes area. They just needed to be fixed properly, and that didn't mean tossing them in a pot and boiling the heck out of them for hours.

Roasted Beets

I love veggies, even as a kid Brussels sprouts and asparagus were two of my favorites. Beets NO WAY, NOW HOW. I DO NOT LIKE THEM SAM I AM.

Potatoes

My mom boiled all veggies to death, and then poured melted velveta cheese ove them. Barf. Thank God I learned how to cook veggies.

Lima beans.

I'll never forget the time as a kid about 11 or maybe 12 yrs old with my parents "back home" on vacation.

At my great-aunt's place she served me lunch, not sure but I think it was fried pierogis and mashed potatoes. Except a quick glance showed they were pale green, nope that was green. I go Auntie why are my mashed potatoes "Green"? Those aren't potatoes dear, those are mashed lima beans. gag:kk1:

Thank god the pierogis weren't filled with mashed lima beans

Green beans. I know y’all are thinking I’m crazy to say that, but I couldn’t stand them and as soon as I’d swallow one, it would come right back up. Even the thought still makes me gag.

I hate green beans. I eat them because they are good for me, puke. I like the purple green beans they are wonderful in a three bean salad. Green bean casserole...I view that as a death threat... oh wait I’m very allergic to mushrooms.

Fairwillows

Where I am supposed to be.
Fish....I wouldn't eat fish. We ate fresh fish from the river. Apparently I choked on a bone at about 4 years old. Snatched me up, turned me upside down, cramming fingers down my throat. Scared my parents to death. Nobody made me eat fish after that. I love fish, but I chew it VERY carefully, to this day.
I ate everything else, everything....my Mom said I was "big boned", not fat :geek:

DEPLORABLE ME
Canned peas. They aren't in the same UNIVERSE as fresh or even frozen. Won't eat them to this day. Overcooked mush with an awful un pea like flavor. Ugh.

ETA: Peas and corn don't need "cooking". They are best when heated only enough to melt the butter on them. :)

Pickled beets, lima beans, liver and rutabagas even the way my maternal grandmother fixed them they were not edible.

The boys loved pickled beets and would clean the bowl.

My grandmother was a great cook and I could eat a couple bites of liver. Grandmother always cooked me a very small piece very well done and had fried potatoes and cream gravy to wash down the taste.

Texican....

Canned spinach, corn, green beans and zucchini with tomatoes. My mother liked modern conveniences

My 16 year old, as of 16 minutes ago. Shot, butchered, and cooked this for himself a couple weeks ago. We love tree rat.View attachment 314143

Never was able to get all the hair off it. More than once bit into some bird shot while trying to eat it. Mom would boil it in a pot with barley until reached the consistency of glue. One or two tree rats cooked into a gray gruel would feed the family.

Anything my mother cooked.

I love my mother, but —Gag! - she was a worse cook than Lisa Douglas on Green Acres!

She would over cook stuff, and it would be dry and tough...

I ate ketchup on EVERYTHING, just to make it marginally pallatiable.

When I was at college, undergraduates living in the dorms were REQUIRED to purchase 7 day, all you can eat Meal Tickets at Iberville Dining Hall, the school cafeteria.

Most of the other college kids would sit around the cafeteria tables at meal time, complaining about the food, calling the dining hall Tomaine Palace, and making jokes about how TPTB had made it illegal to serve real food in the dining hall.

But I fondly remember how GREAT Iberville Dining Hall food was....

Next to the stuff I grew up on, it really was great food!
