ENVR What The Heck Is This? RE: Popocatepetl Volcano (Time Lapse Video At Link) Update 12:39 PM 06/24 Orb Back

day late

money? whats that?
I was watching Popo last night. I found that there is a link under the livecam that shows the last 24 hours. It is second link from the left under the livecam. Someone please tell me what the devil happened. First you can see the moon go down behind Popo, then a VERY LARGE glowing orb follows it. When I say large, it is ten times the size of the moon. Clearly visible on the recorded video. But what the heck is it?

Just did some checking. IT COUND NOT be the moon. The current phase is a crescent moon according to this site. The orb was much, much to large to be the moon.

The first, smaller orb wasn't the moon. The moon would have been the second, larger one. The question is, why was it so full when, as you noted, the moon is a crescent moon right now.

One thought is that with the camera being a night vision camera, was it picking up and magnifying the earthshine reflecting off of the moon. The earthshine this week was supposed to have been unusually bright.

Again, just a thought.

Not sure what you were seeing, but when I viewed the video just now, it skips directly from 23:28 to 23:52, so the relevant bit of video is simply missing. Very curious.

It looks like the crescent moon is superimposed over the image of the volcano. But what is the larger round thing over the volcano is the great question. Great catch Day Late!

Knowing that light can play tricks with everything from cameras to human vision, I'm tempted to agree with you. However, you have the directions backwards. I know it doesn't say so on the site, but the camera is pointed more or less westward. The moon sets in the west. It couldn't have been coming up. The crescent in the photo IS a trick of the light. I moves up, as the orb moves down. Simple, light refraction. But I've been watching Popo for years. That orb was not the moon. What it was, I have no idea, that's why I'm asking everyone here.

I think you should reread my post. I'm not supposing that it was a moonrise. It's obvious from the direction of travel that it's setting.

Earthshine has nothing to do with the rising or setting of the moon.

And I admit I screwed up. I got two posts confused. Sorry about that.

I wonder if the camera is housed behind a dome or something and it is the sun rising in the morning behind the camera?
Actually, I am pretty sure it's the sun.

We have something a bit different tonight. Normally at night, Popo's crater is lighted up on one side or the other. Tonight, the entire thing is glowing. I'm no expert, but it would seem to me that could only mean the volcano is getting hotter.

Right now it's back and bigger than before.

At about 22:48 local time by the clock, the orb began to 'set' behind Popo. Just like you would expect the sun to do. It is bright and clearly descending behind Popo. As before the reflected crescent is present. This seems like a trick of the light, but why would it change position from last night?

Edit to add; the crescent is going upwards, so it can't be the moon, it must be a reflection.

Okay, that's weird. I just watched the last 24 hour recording. It cuts off, just before the orb shows up.
