Prepping….. this week I’m stocking up and making sure I have enough supplies until the end of the year for my business. I should be good with most of the stuff I use until end of January now

for myself I’m buying some more raw nuts…..not a ton but some I don’t already have. (Brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts)

Boys are in the house with mom practicing piano lessons. They started yesterday and are doing very well.
One grandson and I tried new keto recipe for brownies and it's good. That's his 4H project.
Still quite a lot of squash and beans and tomatoes in garden. Not sure what else. Daughter canning corn.
Oldest son had a nice visit here. Our hike group has the last hike in a couple weeks for the year.
Finally found some butane for camp stove local so that's stocked up. I'll be using coal in my cabin stove. Won't take much. Once I'm using wood stove won't need the butane.

Praise the Lord. Realtor got the eviction order and today is the 10th day so it's enforceable. Tenant left but his stuff still there. Hopefully won't be too much work to do and son gets in there before too long. Don't feel too bad about him ok, he owes a ton of payments and lives a lot on his mom's farm. He has a very good job. Just didn't do right by the contract for almost 2 years.

I'm just enjoying being out in my cabin. Grandsons spend time with me out here and really like it.
We have a big storm supposed to hit in about an hour or less.

That's about it. Awana starts soon and the fair and 4h, also the boys and I will work at the pantry this week.

Life has been crazy lately. Taking care of my mother in law, my daughter had surgery on her leg(she is doing well), helping with the grandkids, and trying to do what’s needed at home.

I managed to get some more breaded okra into the freezer. It was just 2 qt bags, but it was 2 more than I had before. I canned some tomatoes and some pears. If I can get enough energy, I have to make pear preserves tomorrow. That will catch me up on the canning.

My broody hen hatched 7 chicks. I have another trying to sit. I may move her and her eggs and see if I can get another hatch.

I have picked some jewel weedto make salve. It is dry. I need to pick off the leaves to see how much I have. Then I guess I should dry more to have on hand.

I am having to feed my bees. It has been very dry the last 3 weeks and they had used part of their stores.

I decided to go through my spice cabinet this morning to see if I was getting low. To my surprise, I found 5 of those TONE's (from Sam's) bottles of poultry gravy mix that were solid as a rock. Since I had bought them as a "just in case", but not something I often use, I threw them away. I'm not planning to replace them. I found a few other bottles of spices that were very old that I hardly ever use, so I threw them out, too. I'm just keeping and stocking those I use all the time from now on. After throwing out all this, I have about 1/3 less spices in my cabinet. The only thing I realized that I'm low on is Taco seasoning mix. That will be remedied with my next Sam's order. It wouldn't hurt if I bought more table salt, too, just to be safe.

We got all the yard work done, yesterday, along with me weeding and cutting down a bunch of old flowers in my beds. Cary added another 1/2 cord of firewood from all the splitting and stacking he's been doing, and has another trailer load to do. He's just working on it a little at a time each morning, before it gets so hot. It was rather cool this morning here at 61 degrees.

Tomorrow, he takes our fur baby for his check up and update on his shots. Afterwards, he will go to our mom and pop small engine repair shop for more oil for his chainsaws and more gas cans. He's been taking inventory of all things he takes care of to make sure he has a good stock.

I've received all my online orders, except Keystone meat.

I have a large canister of chicken bullion that got hard as a rock. No way I was going to throw it out, so I just hack some off and use it, works fine. What I should have done was put it in smaller jars and vacuumed sealed them, maybe in my next life. But i don't buy it that way anymore. Sometimes I forget that I'm not cooking for two growing boys.

Still haven't made it to the bank, probably going today. I only need one thing at walmart. It won't be a long trip.

DH has an appointment at the VA on Friday, will also be filling up the gas cans.

Yeah, I still have 2 Tone's bottles of garlic powder that are like that, but I'll just crumble it up, and use it. It's something I use a lot of, so didn't want to get rid of it. I have enough beef and chicken bullion cubes to last years. I think they last forever, LOL. I also found 3 cans of chicken broth that I brought out to the kitchen to use up, since they are a few years past expiration date. I use the chicken bullion cubes to make chicken broth, so I had forgotten about these cans. I no longer stock canned chicken or beef broth.

I use to not stock the canned broth, but decided to do so in the last few months. Although, I do have a good supply of other types of bullion too. I have garlic like that too, I scrape some out and put it in my mortar and pestle and pulverize it. I bought the canned broth in case there was a water shortage. Need to have liquids on hand.

I haven’t been feeling the best this past few weeks so I haven’t gotten much accomplished. I’ve got so much that I’m running behind on and it’s just adding to my stress levels!

I did a quick look through of herbs and spices and noticed I was really low on basil and thyme, so replacements are on the way. I need to do a more detailed inventory since I have some in the kitchen in a couple of places, some in the pantry, some in the freezers and in the basement pantry. I need to refill my smaller bottles and then I should have a better idea of what else I may need to buy.

I ordered 7 items from Sam’s Instant Savings and they are being sent from TN, MA, and NC in 4 different shipments, seems crazy to me. Dishwasher tablets, toothpaste, q-tips, almonds and dove soap should be arriving in the next few days.

Decided to add some back up tools in the kitchen so I bought another hand can opener, a tool to open canning jar lids, bucket lid opener, veggie peeler and canning funnel.

Also some bobby pins to have when granddaughter loses her tiny hair bands and I need to get her hair out of her face. Ugh, I can’t stand for my hair to touch my face and it drives me crazy to see a child having to constantly push hair out of their eyes.

I reminded DH that he still hasn’t replaced his Carhartt coveralls, he looked at Tractor Supply and they didn’t have anything. It’s getting harder for him to get the old ones on since his shoulders don’t move the same and he really needs them. Gets pretty chilly on the tractor putting hay and feed out for the cows and Farmers Almanac is predicting colder and snowier weather for us this winter. I guess I’ll start looking online and see what if anything I can find.

Water being our weakest link for survival purposes is the very reason I buy canned products, instead of dried, for the water content. I was thinking that buying the bullion cubes would take up less space than lots of canned broth, but it hasn't registered on my brain that water might be an issue for them. So, thanks, Judy.

Have you checked Cabela's online for your DH coveralls? That's where Cary gets all of his Carhartt brand clothing if TSC doesn't have it in store.

Since I have long hair, I panicked early on things for my hair. I can't stand for it to hang down in my face, either. I have a drawer full of bobby pins, barretts, ponytail rings, scrunchies, head bands, clips, etc. Plus an assorted array of bandanas in different colors.

One of our caged water storage tanks was cracked and very brittle from being in the sun. So we bought a replacement which I painted so it would last much longer. Now we just have to wait for more rain to fill it.
I used part of the old cage to make our elevated shooting platform much safer to use.
The bottom of the old tank was still in good shape so I used a cut-out curved section of that and fastened it to the bottom of our heavy-duty work sled to re-enforce that to make it more durable and make it last longer. I bought the big sled to use to haul back any elk I might shoot (they pull easy on grass besides on snow). I also use the sled to haul plant debris to the dump pile during the summer months. I try to re-purpose everything rather than just throwing everything away.

I haven’t looked there yet, but I’m thinking he and I will both be checking! I’m thinking he’d be better off buying insulated overalls with a coat. Thanks.

I didn’t even think about getting some more clips, etc. for myself but her hair is so fine that her little bows and tiny rubber bands, just slide right out. I’m hoping I can put these in criss cross to help them stay in and keep her hair out of her face.

Their quality is good, and if you get on their mailing list, you'll get notices of amazing sales. I love their 3-season jackets...the first one I bought lasted for 8 winters on our dairy farm... outlasted TWO of the modern Carhartts hubby was wearing.

Unfortunately, Carhartt isn't what they used to be! DS is wearing a Carhatt coat that my dad bought in 1978! He gave it tohubby in the late 80's, and hubby wore it for 25 years on the farm! Then passed it on to DS. The most amazing thing is, it's still on the original zipper!

But Aramark has decent stuff. I bought a downfilled snowmobile suit for hubby about 12 years ago- it gets cold spreading manure in NY in the winter. It finally got too ragged, and I replaced it with a pair of insulated coveralls from Aramark. He likes them.

Rain water is our main source of water in a water crisis. We have a 650 gal water tank that is rain fed, and 2 - 55 gallon rain barrels also rain fed. We have storage tanks filled with water to use for washing clothes and dishes, etc. With all the rain we've had lately, everything is overflowing. In the event of a drought or dry spell, we would have to haul water up from a pond that is downhill on our neighbor's property.

So my one thing I needed at Walmart turned into a lot more money. I stocked up on a few supplements, a new rug for DH in front of his chair and a chair cushion that has gripper rubber on the back to keep it from sliding for the foot rest on my chair. The had the 1/2 gallon canning jars that I've not seen in several months, I bought two cases.

The deli luncheon meat isle was really bare, no bologna at all. They did have one package of liver werst which i got and I got 6 cans of the chef boyardee mac and cheese, it has kind of a tinney taste but can be doctored up for something quick. I don't find any of the chef boyardee canned food all that tasty, but it fills a hungry stomach. I eat a can from time to time to keep it rotated.

I missed the mask nazi at the door so I went maskless. Made it to the bank and another errand. I skipped Dollar Tree this trip.

Now to get those gas cans filled on Friday and we are here for the long haul. Everything seems so normal when we go somewhere, except for people wearing masks. I hate all this crap and I hate that I've had to spend so much money being prepare, but greatful to be able to do it.

We have 3 of the caged water tanks and 1 55 gallon plastic barrel that we use for water catchment. That water is only used to water the gardens but obviously could be used for other things. Right now only that new caged tank is empty with the others being all full. Though it gets quite cold here in the winter, none of the tanks or barrels freeze but they are all in the sun.

Going to start progressing more with his cooking skills.
So far he grew, harvested and processed beets into 3 qts pickled beets.
He can make eggs, pancakes, boiled eggs for egg salad. Zucchini bread, brownies. Salads. Spaghetti. Chili with corn chips. All sorts of throw together stuff. Instant rice and pasta etc.
We made a homemade cake and icing too.
So I am going to start him on tacos, baked chicken, mashed potatoes. He knows how to open cans and heat up stuff. He has even used the wood cook stove last winter.
After he gets this stuff down, and the why's about it, which he is doing well at, will go for more complicated dishes.
Tshtf no one will go hungry with him around lol.
Sorry to carry on. All my kids are good cooks. Teaching grands too. And the clean as you go technique.
He understands a lot and gets it after a time or 3. So I can usually just sit and give instructions.
He helped me blanch and bag corn today. 3 qt bags.
Both the boys enjoy being in the garden and learning all about it.
That's good prepping too.
Ps: he has used regular oven and stove, wood stove, butane stove, and the open fire/coals over the camp grill.

Quick post: I'm insanely busy . . .

- If you have anything important online, be sure you have a paper backup or a copy downloaded to a flash drive (not the cloud)

- Make sure you have a hard copy of important numbers stored in your phone.

- Make sure you have a hard copy of all important account numbers (bank, insurance, etc)

- If you have any addresses online but no where else, make hard copies

Please try to remember to do these ASAP if you haven't. If the Internet and or the grid goes down, you'll be extremely happy to have this data in a three-ring binder or however you wish to store it.

I need to do that Meemer, with phone numbers on my phone, I don't store important documents online. And I surely don't want my documents in that cloud crap. I did that years ago and the notebook I recorded the numbers in got wet. I'll be more careful this time.

I forgot to mention that I also bought appliance light bulks. Its a bitch when they go out and you have to rummage around in the dark.

Solar flare due tomorrow (9/10/21) that has the potential to mess up the Internet and other communications. I don't think it will be that bad, but others believe that TPTB might take that opportunity to shut down portions of the Internet, so there's that to consider.

It shouldn't blow a hole in the budget to make some paper backups. I keep a small folder with paid bills (so I have the account numbers), my checkbook, my passport, and a paper address book (that I just updated) in my bugout bag, along with envelopes and forever stamps.

Cary has never trusted a computer or the internet for important numbers, papers, documents, photos, addresses, etc. He has always kept hard copies of everything. Me, too. All online recipes are copied onto paper, and put in my recipe notebooks. Hard copies of books, too. For us, it's just being prudent.

I lived in hurricane country for 40 years, I have everything in a binder in plastic inserts. I also never trusted keeping things important on a computer, as I've had a few computers die before I would have been able to retrieve anything. And what good would a memory stick do if you have not electricity to power up a computer.

Years ago I read where amazon took a book back that people had on their kindles. Every since then I quit buying books for my kindle. Amazon certainly can't be trusted.

Chickens quit laying again. Husband fussing because we have no eggs, but refused to watch puppy so I could go to store. He insisted on having a dog, but will do nothing to help look after her. I had to drag the poor thing on all my errands this morning, she wound up being in the truck for about 2 hours as we drove around. Thankfully it really cooled off, only in mid 70's. She had to sit in the car while I ran in the grocery, about 15 minutes. I figured she would have torn out all the upholstery, but she evidently just sat and cried.
Got my car back and hoping to get my truck serviced today, and then my vehicles should be good to go for about 6 mos. Mechanic told me that he can not leave my truck sitting outside if he doesn't get to it today. Last week somebody cut the catalytic convertors off some trucks in his lot.

I can second your mechanic's caution about your truck. We had ours in at the dealership for some minor repair work, and due to parts not being there had to stay overnight. That night, 9 trucks had their catalytic converters stolen...one was ours. That was two months ago...we're still waiting. It literally could be months more.

We got two monkeys off our back today. First I was able to get an inspection sticker on my van that is having some issues.

Second, Dh's Craftsman planner broke and he's been trying to get them to honor their life time warranty. "They've" been putting him off for a couple of months. They emailed him a prepaid sticker but our printer is broken. I asked for UPS pick up with UPS proving the sticker. They never responded. My cell phone battery is on its last leg, but I managed to get the email with the sticker on my phone, and kept it charged long enough to get the sticker printed at the UPS store. So finally we got the planner mailed back to them. They are supposed to send him a new one. Initially they were going to send him a refund, because they were out of stock, but now they are back in stock.

DH has an appointment at the VA today, so we have to go to a big town. And my phone battery has finally died, and guess who did not write down phone numbers. We do still have a home phone though. And I have a cousin who is a watch maker that will attempt to put in the new battery. Phone numbers are the only important information that I have stored on my phone. My bad and I'll live without it. At least it lasted long enough to get that label printed at UPS. God is good.

Now I just have to remember to take a book with me. I've been spoiled. And now I can't be tract.

My packages from Sam’s arrived over a two day period, and they shorted me on one container of dishwasher tabs, even though they charged for it, SMH, it’s now supposed to be on its way.

I was surprised to get the thyme I ordered so quickly, the rest of that order should be here tomorrow.

I’ve been trying to remember to add a few cans of long term food each or every other month when the prices and budget allow. I have 2 cans of bell peppers and 1 of broccoli on the way.

I bought a flat of Aldis canned apples, a flat of canned squash, a large package of light bulbs, ghee, coconut oil, and teas. I ordered Powdered sour cream, Powdered cheddar,, and a big container of popcorn.

We're pretty stressed over traitor Joe's edicts. It affects both of us. Hoping to go on a picnic on the Blue Ridge Parkway tomorrow.

I have potatoes to can and apples to cook up. Plus lots of stuff to repackage. I wish I had the energy to do it all.....

Hope ya'll have a good weekend!

We went to the VA today for DH's appointments. His back has been bothering him and they xrayed it, didn't get the results yet.

We ate lunch at the very first mcdonalds in Shreveport, I remember going there long long ago. We dined in, and it felt so normal. Actually the whole day felt normal.

Seems like most of the shell gas stations that have been associated with Circle K no long take a Shell card. But we did find one, that is an actual shell station. Filled up 8 gas cans. But this station didn't have diesel, which is what DH uses in his tractor. I have an eye appointment on Wednesday, we'll fill diesel cans then.

No grocery stores today, we do not need anything that I can think of that we have the funds for.

I didn't go in the VA today, could have but chose to stay in the truck and read a book. Thank goodness my cell phone finally charges so now I can copy all the numbers I have in it to a hard copy. I got out and walked around some to stretch my legs. Had to go potty and they let me in the VA to use the restroom and the two ladies were so nice. I asked if they had a lot of covid cases in the hospital and they said they were full with them, no available beds.

We haven't been doing much of anything all week. Yard maintenence and normal stuff, except taking our fur baby to the vet for a check up. He was doing fine.

I still haven't received the Keystone meat I ordered from Pleasant Hill Grains. Cary called them, yesterday, and they said it would probably be around the 1st of October, before we got it. They have a lot of back orders to fill. So, Cary checked Keystone Meats website, and they are back in stock, except for ground beef. I'll be making out another order to them next week.

I looked all over online, yesterday, for #10 cans of dried bell peppers. I found a site, but it will break the bank to get those, so I declined. For the time being, I'm going to buy peppers, and chop them for the freezer. I'll save the #10 cans I already have for long term storage. I've been using them, instead of taking up room in the freezers by chopping and freezing my own. Once again, no peppers from our garden this year to speak of. Sigh. Our local farmer's market this year was a total loss. We didn't get to buy any purple hull peas, so I'll have to keep stocking those from the grocery store.

Cary has a doctor's appointment on Tuesday for a check up. Hopefully, his doctor won't give him a hard time about the vax. This is his doctor that writes all of his prescription meds. If he refuses to be Cary's doctor, because he isn't vaxxed, I don't know what we'll do. All of the doctors in our area are all a part of the same medical system/complex/network.
