Good Morning, All! I hope everyone is doing well this week.

I finally made it to my vacation time off work, and not a second too early - I was really feeling the need for a break! This is the week I take the kittens in for their neuter and spay, but I'm also planning lots of naps, porch sitting while watching the hummingbirds, reading for fun, and then I have an appointment at the local spa for some pampering - something I do so rarely that I don't even recall the last time.

I am going to do some actual work around the farm and in the house - I've let work pressures and extra hours distract me from keeping my inventories up to date, so I plan to work on that, and to fill any holes I find. The stores seem to still be fairly well stocked around here, so I shouldn't have too much trouble. I want to hit the thrift stores as well - those grandsons just keep growing out of their clothes; don't know what daughter is feeding them  I'm also looking forward to getting back to the pool - spending too much time hunched over a computer at work and need to stretch out.

Grandson has a football game today; we're taking my van so I need to go out and make sure it is at least moderately clean, throw some ice in the cooler and dump in some Gatorade and water. It's not supposed to get too hot, thank goodness! I'm half expecting daughter to try to leave the boys in the van when we get back to her house so that they go home with me since tomorrow is a holiday...

Well, lollygagging here isn't making sure my purple shirt is clean; guess I'd better get up and get moving! You folks all stay safe out there; it's getting more crazy than usual...

My Chewy order finally arrived after 8 pm last night, and I had to go hunt for it in the dark with a flashlight. FedEx threw it out in the middle of the driveway, thankfully not in the ditch like last time. At least it's here. I thought I had ordered the same bulk rawhide chips that I got years ago, but these are 12 inches long. The puppy wasn't quite sure what to do with the first one I gave her, but it lasted her 90 minutes. :)
It finally cooled off a little bit and I actually got to sit outside and read for a little while this morning, with company. I have to take the puppy everywhere I go. The barn cat came and sat on the gas grill out of puppy's reach and purred. Ancient gelding tried to eat my book and nibbled on my hair. It worries me when he's so clingy, he usually doesn't want to be bothered with anybody. A nice morning. Of course it didn't last, it's back in the mid 90's already...

Renee, that doesn't sound like you will be getting any rest on your "vacation".

We are going to make a run to Walmart, don't have much on my list though.

I've been sleeping in my lift chair for months and have pretty much come to the conclusion that its not that good for my legs. Both knees have been killing me and my lower legs in general. So I got in the bed for a couple of hours this morning and my legs feel much better. That and the Ouch Lintament. My left knee has been so bad that I could hardly stand up and walk. But I do sleep like a baby in that chair, although being able to walk is pretty important.

I ran to the local Kroger this morning with a short list of the things I use regularly and a few perishables. I didn't check every aisle, but all the aisles I did look at were well stocked. There are still huge carts piled with boxes waiting to be stocked. I made a point to thank the several stockers I saw. No noticeable price increases and more than a few good sale prices. A few days ago a friend was looking for her bottled raspberry tea but there was none. Today the shelves were well stocked with it so I got her a 4 pack.

On the way home I stopped at the gas station to top off the tank. I was the only one there. The 1/4 tank I got was just about $20. $3.95 gallon. I need to top off a couple of 5 gallon cans that are only half full and getting old. I've got 2 bottles of StaBil but they're getting a bit old too. Guess I should pick up some fresh.

The chore on the list this afternoon is to start the generator and make sure it's in working order. I can't shake the feeling that TS is getting ready to HTF.

So with all the talk about food shortages decided to do yet another grocery run. Went to the local WM and was pleasantly surprised at how well the grocery aisles were. Absolutely the best stock levels in over two months for sure. Spent quite a bit but was able to get everything on our list and few (!!!) things more. Gas had gone up a dime ($2.89 western Ok). Made sure to include a number of different consumables as well. I'm very sure we're going to be in for a very bumpy time ahead so doing what I can to try and smooth that out.

After pulling money out of our emergency fund to buy groceries over the past month (I've done it before, but not this bad). I'm not prepping as much anymore. It's time for me to take a break. I've added a lot to our preps. I'll keep replacing what I use every two weeks, but that's about it other than shopping for us both new fall and winter clothing that is much needed.

This week, we don't have plans to do anything in particular. Just regular ordinary yard and housework, and waiting for all my online orders to arrive.

Have a blessed week, Everyone!

I can relate to those who felt the need to shop for food. I'm feeling it, too, but I told myself NO for now. I'll get more meat at the butcher when it opens on Tuesday. The pantry is full, and I don't want to exceed those limits. I do have some space in the freezer.

I did add another pack of clothes pins and a pack of safety pins on the last trip. I have spots for those, and today's clothes pins break after about six months with heavy use.

The closet re-organizing project progresses in fits and starts. I ended up having to rip out the rod and re-do a portion of the supports and drywall in the front closet. The former owner put in this complicated bar system but didn't anchor it properly, so it pulled out half of the drywall. And then they covered that up with what looks like stick-on tile. I've ripped it all out, dry walled, patched, and painted. When the paint is dry, I'll put up new supports for the rod and a new shelf above it. In the meantime, I culled about half of what was in there, and most of that will go to charity -- Walmart sweat pants and sweat shirts that aren't worth tailoring so they fit better. I was working from home most of last year and switched over to sweats a lot of the time.

We went to bigger town that has Lowes and got the last 3 boards for the walls in cabin. Those are put up. So now I have to finish around one window and the top eaves.
Cement board was out. A lot was out. 1/4 inch un sanded 4x8 plywood was 28$. That's better but I like this brown board. Much easier to work with. Even that had gone up $3 a sheet. They did cut it for us.
I'm not sure what to do for the ceiling. Money is pretty tight. I'll think of something. Last winter I used 6ml plastic which actually worked good and is $10 a roll. One roll was more than enough.

Worked on interior of cabin. Cleaned and purged and reorganized. Much better. Still little bit to do but getting there.
I'm listening to Midsomer murders on yt. Chickens are out for a while. Bed is comfy.
Yes on the clothespins. In the winter clothes are hung in kitchen by coal stove. But rest of the year they go on the line. Got to keep a decent supply.

Boys and their parents went to the fair. Our county fair is end of the month. Still working on those projects.
Still haven't gotten results of CT I had Wednesday.

I just got through planting my fall garden: several types of lettuce, broccoli, cabbage and spinach. I will plant some turnip green seeds later, but probably not this week.

Most of my family from New Orleans is up here right now. We heard from my sister - the one who stayed down in New Orleans to help out at Oschner Hospital. She is tired, hot and over worked. But she is OK.

I bought a container of strawberry ice cream in her honor. Wish I could send it to her, but I can’t. So me, my Missus, and my visiting family ate it for her.

I like Midsummer Murders too, but I think I've seen them all several times.

The new season 4 of yellowstone is finally starting in November, me and a whole bunch of other people have been waiting for it. They are playing all 3 seasons this weekend, I've got them recording.

We made our trip to a walmart in a smaller town, they didn't have everything I wanted on my list, but almost. I wrote it on paper instead of relying on my phone list. The shelves had holes and they didn't have the TP I wanted so I bought the more expensive brand, I have plenty, probably two years worth, but I like to replace when I use a package to keep what I have consistent. I actually spent way more than I wanted to but I got several multiple bottles of some supplements. I use to turn my nose up at walmart supplements but they work good enough. I don't have the kind of income I use to when I worked.

The part that broke on DH's saw mill finally came in, he ordered extra. I asked him if he though there was any other parts that he might need and he said one of the belts is getting some wear. I called Harbor Freight but I didn't know which one he needed and the nice lady said to call back tomorrow to speak to a parts specialist that could tell me which one I described. The CS people at Harbor Freight are always nice and they speak American English.

My brother made it back home just fine and said he was glad we got to see him, he's 11 years younger and has been a pest since he was born, but he's a good guy, just likes to give his ancient sister a hard time. We were glad we got to see him too. He's very generous to his sister.

ST, thanks for the headsup on the keeping pepperming around and how you used it for your tummy ache, DH has had an issue with that since I started giving him NAC, which is a side affect, but its gotten better, if he complains about it again I'll give him some.

God is good all the time.

Random photo from the internet, but this is similar to my front closet now. I don't have that many coats or two shelves, but I do have three baskets, cap hooks, and hooks below that like the photo. I'm going to add a strip of indoor/outdoor carpet to the floor for boots.

My goal is to try to leave a lot of space in the front closet. If I need to start keeping a full bug-out kit, it and the cat carrier will go there.

Looking good, meem! And it's so nice to have things organized and out of sight. One of my biggest gripes about this apartment- NO CLOSETS!

Last suggestion: if you have some time on your hands tomorrow, consider checking your inventories for "show stopper" items, like house, porch, appliance light bulbs, household oil (or universal lube, WD-40), duct tape, working fire extinguishers . . .

Make a list. You don't have to get them now -- food might be a priority -- but you'll have a running list.

I have a house utility drawer, where I keep things like appliance light bulbs, spare keys, batteries (in a battery case) and other very small (but important) items. A little squirt of oil, a piece of duct tape, or a working ceiling fan light can make all the difference sometimes.

Following up on what Meemur posted, I keep a large stock of assorted hardware around the place. Something invariably needs fixing since I have the house and two apartments here on my property. Fortunately I have some good tenants but when something does need attention it's so nice to be able to for the most part go to the garage and have what I need to do the repair on hand. Harbor Freight sells a wide selection of small parts kits (average price $8) and I have at least a dozen different ones. Nuts, assorted screws, assorted bolts, o-rings, washers and so much more. Having those has been a major help over the years. They are opening a Harbor Freight here in my town in the coming weeks and I'm both excited and worried. Easier access but means I'll be spending more LOL

Good job Meemur!
I put one of those shoes holder things with the pockets, on wall in cabin. Holds a lot very neatly.
I have a few under the bed storage bins that roll. Keep clothes there off season.
I'm hoping to put a wall long bookcase in too. Books, movies, etc. I have one for food etc in my little kitchen area.
Oldest son over in woods camped out. Coming by for coffee in a bit.

One of our sons is visiting this weekend so no prepping being done, except we have done a lot of hiking, enough for this old man.
While a year ago I made a coal forge for blacksmithing, he brought down his gas forge which I bought from him. He had bought a larger one for himself. There is no where around here to buy coal so now I will have the option to use gas instead. I did teach him how to make leather knife sheaths and we each made one so he got some experience.
Other than that just relaxing.

Yeah, no closets would drive me buggy. I'd have to go buy at least two Sauder wardrobes. I'd have a constant mess without some sort of system like this.

View attachment 287746

When we moved into our house, there was no closet in our bedroom. There was only one small closet in the other bedroom. So, Cary hand made two matching wardrobes for our bedroom. He's made most of our furniture over the years, but he doesn't do much wood working anymore. He still has his shop, though.

Don't forget oven and fridge light bulbs and for all those with trailers, those little light bulbs for trailer lights. The yellow ones for the porch that don't attract bugs work great, if you can find them.

I am taking the weekend to work and inventory so that we can lay hands on things NOW when needed. Things got a bit scattered and it is now time to plug holes in preps and put things in their places. Things look good, but I have a strong feeling that going to the store is either going to be a thing of the past, or too fraught with danger to attempt. What little window we had is closing.

Going to big town middle of next week to make a HF run. Gawds help my poor bank account. That place is more temptation than chocolate!

I hate to go to Harbor Freight - I always end up with a bunch of those little razor blade knives. Though, come to think of it, I only have a couple of those that I can find right now....

I ran to town to drop off youngest grandson's chrome book that was forgotten in my van once we all got home from the football game yesterday, and to pick up stuff needed to for younger grandson to make an edible model of a plant cell. (We did an animal cell last year for his brother). While I was at the store, I also picked up generics of Chlor-Trimeton, Clariten, Allegra, and Zyrtec to replace the ones that are either outdated or nearly so. There are lovely 6+ foot tall 'weeds' with yellow blooms in the 'turkey patch' that Cousin's son planted east of my gardens. Hopefully, one of those 4 will work for the allergies :)

Thanks, Wanderlore!

Did more culling this morning, this time in my bedroom closet. Then I packed up the portable grill and cooler. I'm going out to the park for reading and grilling. The neighbors all have grand kids visiting, and it's getting loud.

I bought a chain saw. I have officially joined the helen-chainsaw club. It is a Ryobi that uses premixed gas/oil that I bought with it. Been reading up on how to use it.
I have a large branch that fell on my chicken pen from Ida. There are other things it will come in handy for, I'm sure.
Bought some soups for my food preps at Wm, and needed some cargo pants, so got a pair of those too.

Sometime this week I will enlarge my chicken pen and put my newest three pullets and roo in it. They have outgrown the tractor.
I need to get the basement in order and stock chicken feed for the winter. I started cleaning out my utility room to get that ready for winter too.
Gonna wait til the end of Sept to put away summer clothes in favor of cooler seasonal things. I hate saying good bye to summer.

Yesterday morning I got up, got dressed, drank some water and took a walk, and walked later too. got twice the steps that I usually do. This morning, nada. Felt good yesterday morning and this morning I'm tired and still tired, coffee did not help, although I always drink water first.

Got to go to town to the bank, but I don't think I'm going to make it today. Just need one thing from walmart.

Yesterday I cooked one of the rack of ribs that my brother treated us to, yummy, enough left over for today.

My lower legs are better since I have stopped spending the whole night in my lift chair. Its just not quite long enough that my feet hang off the edge. This is put all the weight on my lower legs on my calves, which has made them hurt and my feet swell. I guess its about 4 days since I made the change, my lower legs don't hurt and my feet are not swollen. I do get up from the bed aching all over, but my lower legs are much better. i guess its a trade off. My chair is so comfortable, its almost like floating on a cloud, I sleep really well in my chair and not so much in my bed. Oh well.

My lower legs are better since I have stopped spending the whole night in my lift chair.

Two things help me:

- My 2nd recliner fits me well, so my feet don't hang over
- I paid big bucks (around $1,000) for a really good single hybrid mattress (Sealy Hybrid) which has made a big difference!

My achy back/knees tend to occur now when I over-do bike riding or lifting -OR- sometimes my pollen allergies are bad and I need to sleep more upright, but these aren't due to a bad recliner or uncomfortable mattress.

We are not in a position to buy a new mattress. We do have a 3 inch memory foam topper on the mattress which makes the mattress bearable. I try to lay on my back, but it makes my hip hurt so I end up on my side. And when I lay on my side my shoulder hurts. All of this is why I started sleeping in the chair. We have to make do with what we have.

Or consider buying a memory foam topper for your bed. They can make a huge difference in how you sleep and feel.

I've considered doing that, too. Our mattress is fairly new, but it is too hard even with the pillow top. Since it's a pillow top mattress, it makes the mattress extra thick. If I add another layer of memory foam, I'm afraid my fitted bedsheets won't fit.

I'm like Judy. It's always a toss up every night as to whether I sleep in the bed, on the sofa, or in my recliner. There are good points and bad points to doing each one. Still, I can't sleep, and wake up all during the night and in the morning with aches and pains.

We have a really deep queen size memory foam mattress. Even the deep fitted sheets aren't deep enough. I buy king sized and tuck the extra fabric in.

I’m deep into harvesting, preserving, canning mode now…made a run to all the stores but Walmart but I may end up there too. Spices were hard to find (just did an inventory at home to update old ones) and I want to get ready for all the additional meat preserving going on.

Have got to dig my food dryer out of the Conex in the next day or so to put up my herbs. Jars and lids too. Not quite time to collect seeds but I’ve got everything ready for that project. Still harvesting greens like chard, mustard, kale, cabbage - and fixing to deal with onions, leeks, beets, celery, carrots, pumpkins and squash.

I'm sad to do it but I’m taking down a flower basket about every day now as things are fading. Keeping some flowers going yet for next year’s seed. And I have three new garden containers I’m building for next year. Almost time to plant next year’s garlic too…we are seeing lots of yellow in the woods now, and leaves are quickly falling. Sandhill cranes and geese and swans all heading south overhead daily.

I do hope to get a moose or dall sheep, at least a caribou this autumn! Meanwhile, I’ve canned all the fish out of the freezer and now I’m working on beef chilis and pork stews to make room in case that hunt is successful. :)
