Good Morning, All!! I think I might finally be caught up on sleep! I didn't get much of a nap before I went in to work Thursday night, then stayed up for about 4 hours after I got off work Friday morning to go to the Farmer's market and finish planting the front garden. I was snoozing away until around 3pm when my phone blew up - group text message r/t work; they needed someone to come in early. You know that button on your phone that you can slide over so you only get calls/texts from certain people? Yeah, mine doesn't work.... Or, more likely, I'm doing something wrong  I'll get one of the kids at work to show me what I need to do next time. With daughter and the grandsons on the road driving home from Montana, my phone needed to be on, but more than a few hours of sleep would have been nice...

I tracked daughter and the boys while they were driving home; figured that they'd be getting home around 9 or 10 am, so stopped by home briefly, then headed over to her house to clean the fridge and dump the garbage into the cans; then was off to Wal-Mart (the only grocery store in town - there used to be three others) to restock her fridge. I got back to their house just in time to carry everything in and move my van so she'd be able to back up to the ramp door to unload their stuff. One boy took off immediately to go check out what his friends had been doing; the other headed to his room to play a video game, daughter cleaned the pool filter and then threw some chemical in before she and the dog headed to the couch for a nap. I headed home, dozed off in the tub until Hubby knocked on the bathroom door and woke me up, then staggered to bed - and didn't wake up until almost 9pm - and then went back to sleep and slept all night. Should be caught up for a bit

It's a pretty day here so far - temp is in the high 50's and it's not too humid, so it's nice and cool to have the kitchen door open. Right now, I'm drinking my coffee and eating a raspberry muffin from the farmers market while listening to the hummingbirds zipping back and forth, and the other birds in the grape vines that shade that west porch chirping away. Mornings like this soothe my soul - they help me recharge from the chaos of work and world. The clouds to the west are a deeper blue than usual for this time of the morning - I keep going to the kitchen door to look out and make sure they aren't getting darker  I'm hoping that the rain that was predicted to hit between 6 & 7 am has dissipated instead of lollygagging around and waiting to hit when I can get out in the back garden to work. I need to till the back garden one more time before I plant it - and I kinda don't want to start tilling until I hear Hubby stirring around - that ancient Troy-Bilt tiller can shake the house from 40' away!!

The feral kitty just came up for breakfast - she'll come inside to the kitchen rug to eat the food I put down for her if I don't get too close! I've been working on trying to tame her for months now; she'll get to within a few feet of me, but no closer. Hubby said she wound around his feet last night when he was sitting on the porch, so maybe it was a female that made her so spooky as she loves the grand-dog and now tolerates Hubby. I'm going to have to put up a short chicken wire fence and soak some some newspaper to put down in my raised strawberry bed and wet it down though, she was digging in it and I don't want her using it as a litter box.

Well, my computer/internet is starting to get wonky, which means that storm might hit after all - guess I'd better post this and let Hubby know that it's time to get up by firing up the tiller!

You folks all take care out there - stay safe!!

Getting a new week started! It's going to be another full one for us.

Today is home fellowship. Afterwards, we need to water the gardens. I put Epsom salt around everything late yesterday afternoon, and the gardens need water. No rain in sight for a few more days. Everything is coming along really good. I also have chicken thawing to cook to make up a batch of chicken enchilada soup tomorrow. The recipe makes a lot. Cary doesn't like it, but I make it for my lunch.

Tomorrow, also, Cary will be going into big town to try and get a starter for the lawn tractor. I hope they have one in stock. If he gets the tractor fixed, he'll be mowing. The yard isn't too bad right now, but the longer it goes, the worse it gets as far as snakes go. Yes, we have a problem with snakes every year, and it helps to keep the grass cut really short. Copperheads are bad, here. One rattler has been killed, too. I'll be washing more jars. Seems that's going to be almost an everyday thing for awhile. More laundry.

Tuesday is my much dreaded day to get my first filling at the dentist. I'll be pretty much wiped out that day, due to having to take the Valium. Appt time is 1pm, but I have to take the Valium 1 hour ahead.

Wednesday will be canning day, again. More ground beef, or I may just do some of the soup. I usually make up a batch, and keep it in the fridge to eat until it's gone for my lunch. I'd like to try canning some of it, though.

Don't know what the rest of the week looks like, yet. It depends on the weather. I think rain is in the forecast for Thursday.

Regardless, splitting and stacking more firewood, gardening, canning, laundry, household chores, cooking, and trying to stay sane in an insane world will be going on.............Steady as she goes.

Hope everyone has a great week ahead! God Bless you all!

There are so many things I'm waiting to do until after the next electric meter reading, which is finally tomorrow.

Putting the heater on the wet floor and wall in my closet for one, after that gets dry we need to cover the bad area with kilz, DH said he is not going to overlay it with cedar boards. After everything is dry then the shelving unit can go up and I can finish organizing my 10x12 closet.

I've got a couple things I want to wash in hot water that I'm waiting to do. I bought some men's tank tops to wear around the house with shorts (my summer uniform), but they need to shrink some, which they will do in hot water and the clothes dryer.

It seems like there were other things on my mental list but I can't remember them now.

DH finished his water wagon yesterday. He can do anything he sets his mind to do. He's got some congestion in his chest, so I don't know what he's going to do today, but even not feeling great he won't sit on his duff and do nothing.

I've got to tackle the mess in my office, it looks like a hoarders room. I've got a small chest of drawers in here that I may move to the cabin and put up a shelving unit. I've got two big shelving units in here, but they get piled up. Books, fans, meds in containers stacked everywhere. I start working on it and get overwhelmed because I don't know where to put stuff.

Tech, by limited variety, do you mean different brands of the same item, or different items? Are all the shelves, cold and freezer cases fully stocked? I notice different items at different stores; I think they adjust what they stock by what people purchase, so it may take your Aldi a bit of time settle into what they stock - there are two that I go to, and they do carry different items.

While I was dragging tomato cages up to the garden and getting them in to place, Hubby put the posts in for the pole bean fencing - trying to use the post driver to put those posts in to the ground is a pain if you're short - I always figure with all that weight on the top it's liable to tip the pole over and bonk me in the head  I can get the 4' posts in with no problem though.

I got the back garden tilled again; now I just need to go out and rake the dead plants out so I can give it another going over this evening - I want to get all the potential weeds out that I can before I plant the corn and the other set of pole beans. But before I do that, I need to go out with the loppers and cut the large walnut tree branches Hubby trimmed that were hanging down pretty low into smaller pieces; then load them in the buggy and haul them to the brush pile; that way he can mow the yard this evening since we've got rain in the forecast for mid morning tomorrow. I'm hoping the rain holds off until at least 9 am so that I can try for another load of compost from the sale barn. If I can't get the compost, I might go get a load of bagged mulch instead.

Well, lunch break is over so I guess I'd better go get to work on those walnut branches...

I've heard so much about how Aldis carries a lot of German and European brands/types of different food items. Some stores might do that, but ours doesn't. I was disappointed with that aspect of it.

Aldi cut out the majority of their importing - there's some items left especially around the holidays - they are down to the basics and the best US supplier for the $$$$

There was a time when I got a lot of food items directly from Germany. When Aldi's came to our town, I was hoping I would be able to get some of those items there, instead. It's not happening at our local Aldis.

My Aldi carries some German products year-round for instance sauerkraut in a glass jar. It's very good. They have other specials throughout the year. I love the canned fried apples which I missed in 2020 and only got 4 cans in 2021. The problem with those specials is hitting the store before they are gone. A thought just occurred to me. I should make a calendar of the dates the special items I like show up each year. My problem is once a month shopping means either missing an item or making a special trip which I hate to do.

Another benefit of shopping Aldi is there are not 100's of each item to sift through. One variety of flour, sugar, peaches, pears, green beans etc. The price on Aldi brand of cereals is excellent and they are good. It makes shopping go much smoother and faster.

I've gotten to the point that I dread having to work my way through dozens of aisles at super stores to find what I need. Fareway is easier than HyVee and both easier than Walmart. If the prices were not so crazy at our local store, I'd do most of my shopping there as it's about the size of Aldi with store brand plus one nationally advertised brand. It is a quick shopping trip. I do buy most of my meat locally because it's very good quality with prices similar to the larger stores.

My average grocery spending per month for 2018 $97.42; 2021 $110.95; first 5 months 2022 $137.26. My budget amount for 2022 was set at $110 which you can see is not working. I'd guess I do 85% of my grocery shopping at Aldi. The other 25% elsewhere is for things Aldi does not carry or fresh stuff locally between Aldi trips.

Wish we had Aldi anywhere close - nearest one is in mid-KS at least 300 miles away.

Put 16 lbs of cherries in the freeze dryer last night. A friend called and asked to spend Tuesday - Thursday with us for a class he's attending, so I need to get the guest house ready and the main house somewhat cleaned. He and his wife are almost like extra kiddos to us - it will be great to see him.

Otherwise this week is the usual - work and radiation. I'm starting to get tired, but I'm hanging in there.

The rain has stopped so I went out and thinned the tomato plants. Have 6 more to root and 4 ready to plant. I'll do that in the morning.
I'm looking for another clothes drying rack. I have two but would like another one.
DH picked up the potting soil I needed so it's just a matter of filling the pots.
My sister sent me an article about the nation's largest egg producer burning down has anyone heard about that?

Yes, I heard something about the fire. It was on national TV news. They said it took out several MILLION eggs a day, or week, or something like that. Sorry I cannot do better with the information, but my wife is having a hard time right now - she cannot get one of the meds that helps her tolerate her chemo.

And caring for my wife is more important than listening closely to TV news.

Two food items I miss from Germany are all the chocolate candy and the packets of vanilla sugar. The best chocolate candy in the world comes from Germany, IMHO. It's not like the chocolate here in the US. Also, those little packets of vanilla sugar are great sprinkled over cereal or mixed with cold milk to make a thickened vanilla cream sauce. It goes great over any type of desserts/jello as a slightly sweetened sauce. Have any of you who shop at Aldis come across candy imported from Germany or the vanilla sugar packets?

Cary had 2 aunts and one first cousin who sent us packages from Germany all throughout the year. If we had a request for something in particular, we ask them to send it. His aunts have passed, and he has lost contact with his cousin. We are no longer able to get items on request. Before Memphis got too dangerous, we would make a trip there once a month or so to a little German shop/bakery to pick up German foods and wines. It's just too dangerous now days. We haven't been in a couple of years, and don't even know if it is still there.

Thank you all for all the info on teas/supplements for blood pressure in last week's thread - you are the most helpful folks!! The only plants I know of in this area that are in the hibiscus family would be Rose of Sharon and Hollyhocks. Maybe okra? The flower looks to be the same type - I will have to go look it up, and do a little more research. I'm not much of a fan of beets unless they are yellow ones, but will research the beet chews as well. Dropping 20 pounds would probably help, too (bleah.) I hate to start on a course of treatment without having a way to continue it in an emergency situation - which holds true for meds from the pharmacy as well... Maybe I'll check in at the country landscaping place and see if they have any Rose of Sharon - or check with daughter's friend to see if I can take cuttings from her trees...

The rain in the forecast has been pushed off until after noon but I have another half hour to go before I can head over to the sale barn in hopes of getting another load of compost. I also need to stop by daughter's for a minute, then go by the bank and drop off a deposit. May have to park my trailer way the heck out in the parking lot at the Evil Empire to go in an pick up a few things for my work lunches; then again, I may just suck it up and deal with whatever I can throw together at home - I can surely figure out something for ONE night... (and stop at the store on the way home from work Tuesday.)

Then, if I have time before the rain hits, I need to scoop up the dead weeds I managed to rake up last night and haul them off - I just didn't have it in me to load 'em last night. By the time I get that done, I'm anticipating that it will be time to clean up and take a nap before work. Note to self - put ibuprofen in work bag...

Take care all; hope you all have a good week!

I made Hibiscus tea last night, its tasty. I did add stevia, but it might be better without it. I put two tea bags in about a 3/4 full of water 1/2 gallon jar, and put it in the freezer. After it had gotten nice and cold and the tea had turned the water really dark, I used a funnel to fill a water bottle of tea. Not only was it tasty but also refreshing. I've ordered some garlique for high blood pressure, it was cheapest on amazon, a couple of dollars higher on w/m.com.

I'm also taking beet root capsules and wearing my compression stockings. The swelling in my feet is almost gone and my BP is a lot better. Oh, and I'm also walking more.

Today the electric meter gets read, finally. I think I'm getting used to the heat, its not bothering me so badly.

Hike was great yesterday. But I think that may be last hike to caves for me. The climb down is rough. The climb back up is really horrid. I slipped and nearly fell over the top of caves as I was climbing but my SIL was there and helped.
There are plenty of other hikes out here.
The kids had a good time. Daughter and SIL came along.
Went out this morning and popped all the seed heads off on the onions. Supposed to get a storm tonight I think.
Older grandson goes home today. Two littles have soccer game tonight.
I didn't realize it, but we were totally out of coffee! I had stored quite a bit. All we had were beans. Which were actually pretty good coffee.
So I will have to go stock up.
Daughter and I are gardening seriously this year, more so than ever.
Gas and everything is way up. Plus SIL is now in classes for 8 weeks so working part time.
I am so grateful we were able to really stock up last year.
Btw I have a big Hawthorne tree on my side yard.

I have not been to Aldi's for years. Used to go occasionally when visiting family. Loved to go around Easter because they had great chocolate for Easter. And they had a center section filled with non-food irems that varied seasonally.

And like others have said, it is small. Same with TJ's. I have Specialty things I like from there when I am in a big city.

I've got everything ya'll suggested for high BP written down, and will check into getting each one, once I get paid. Funds are a bit tight right now, and I can't order anything. BP was 138/88, yesterday, and this morning it was 127/84. I don't think it's high enough to have to take BP meds, but I want to get something to bring it down, before it gets to that point. I'm sure Cary can use it, too. Neither of us want to be dependent on script drugs in a SHTF situation. Once I find something that works, I'll stock up on it. It might be more than one thing that works for both of us.

Cary just got back home from big town. He got the starter for the lawn tractor. It cost quite a bit more than what he expected. The prices on everything has gone up so much. He buys the generic brand of RoundUp, and when he looked today, it was over $100 for what he always buys!!!! That is a huge price increase. Anyhoo, he's working on the tractor right now, and hopefully, all it needed is the new starter. He'll be mowing if he gets it fixed.

I got all the gardens watered this morning at daylight. Had to get it done, before it got too hot. I also have laundry going, and have finished making the chicken soup. It's on the stove simmering now. Got the kitchen all cleaned up.

It's going to be a hot one, today. Humidity is supposed to be high, too.

It's supposed to be in the mid 90's for the next 10 days. egads! I bought a small fan to put in the bathroom. I do not like to do my business and sweat.

Many years ago ex and I lived in a raised double with high ceilings in Midcity. We had two window units and the cool never, ever reached the bathroom or the kitchen. Ex put a small ceiling fan over the commode and it really helped. We put one of those huge window fans in the kitchen window, it would blow you away. These fans had been popular in New Orleans forever. They are hard to find now because everyone has ac. I kept a full pantry back then (mid to late 80's) and the food got hot, but I don't remember things going bad.

Woo-Hoo! The gentleman at the Sale Barn was available to load compost for me today - and Hubby is off today so I didn't have to fight the breeze on my own to get the trailer tarped and tilted so if the rain that is in the forecast does hit us it will run off the tarp.

I'd planned to sift the soil out of the weeds I'd raked up in the back garden yesterday but the neighbor lady called and asked me to go to the pool with her. Since the radar now shows the rain that wasn't supposed to get here until this afternoon to now be imminent, I'm going to the pool instead dragging everything out and having to drag it right back in. I have tomorrow off, so hopefully it will have dried up some by the time I wake up in the afternoon and I can get at least the weeds I already have raked up hauled off, and maybe some more zinnias planted, and possibly some coneflowers.

Well, I hear the neighbor's truck headed down our road so I'd better grab my swim bag and head out the door. Take care all - stay safe!

Hibiscus tea can usually be found in the Hispanic food section of your grocery. It is a popular tea south of the border. It is also a common flavor of things like sodas, koolaids, aqua frescas, etc.

They are very different. .our Aldis is a tiny cramped store..and I really don't like it...so I never go there..our Lidl is larger and has a good mix of items...wonderful imported cheese..great seafood..not in love with their fresh meat and chicken..I think it is over priced..wonderful inexpensive imported chocolate and European cookies. .it is not huge..more like old time grocery stores...before super markets...from the 1950's...lots things from Europe....it is like everything today...I get some things there and somethings..other places...it seems you can't get everything in just one place anymore.
