One thing I cannot do right now is can.

Of all the times for it to happen, a little bird set up a nest in an open, plastic box that I store miscellaneous small tools and such in. That plastic box is right next to my back door, so close that my arm sometimes rubs against the box when I am going in or out of my back door.

And that is where she built her nest and hatched her babies!

The babies are four days old, and I think they are doing well. Their eyes are now open, but they still rely on Momma to bring them food.

My problem is that the plastic box she set up her family in is sitting on top of a tower of two large, well sealed Rubbermaid totes that are holding all of my canning gear.

This home is small, and I did not have another place to store the gear. Never in a million years did I suspect that a little bird would make her nest on top of my cannning gear. They are at such a vulnerable age right now, I don’t want to spook Momma into not returning to feed her babies. (I don’t know where she is living, but she does not live inside that plastic box with her babies.)

So, for right now at least, I cannot start canning those tomatoes yet.
at least you have a good reason, I have no excuse.

Our daughter had her baby 5 weeks early Saturday morning. A week ago Friday she saw the dr and things were fine. This last Friday her blood pressure was 195/130. The hospital got it down and was trying for a normal delivery. Then the baby went into crisis and they did an emergency C section. The baby is doing great and breathing on her own. She is 4 pounds 12 oz. Our daughter is not doing as well. Usually delivering the baby means the mother eclampsia goes away. But not in her case. While some of her vitals are improving, she is running a fever and her platelet counts have dropped into the critical level. Prayers would be appreciated. She is up with help walking and still nursing the baby some. But until she is better I won't stop praying and of course worrying.

I will give an update later. I have to get some work done before we go back to the hospital.

Praying I know it is scary But remember God has this God Bless

Barry... birds aren't nearly as easy to discourage as you fear. When the mother bird is out foraging, gently move the box the nest is in, and grab whatever equipment you need from your containers. If you need to, you can move the Rubbermaid containers, and settle the nest box on something else... she won't care.

We actually moved an entire barn swallow nest because she had built it where it would get crushed when we started running hay bales up out mow conveyor. We built a support shelf in the rafters about 6 feet away, and glued the nest onto it. Mama was back feeding the babies within 15 minutes...

I was reading over in the monkeypox thread, and saw where baking soda might be good to help treat the pox sores. I have several large bags of baking soda, but never use it. Does it ever get too old? The bags have never been opened. I bought it up thinking to use it for homemade laundry detergent, but didn't like the homemade version. Now, I have all these bags, and could never bring myself to just throw it out.

It will never go bad unless it gets wet or damp.

Baking soda is a WONDER product!! Look up all the many, MANY things it can be used for: foot soak, paste to stop itching, wasp/hornet/bee first aid, kills weeds, and MUCH MORE!!

Thanks. That's good to know! I won't worry about it being too old then. I was afraid I would have to go buy more, and throw all of this out.

That is what "they" want people to think, toss out perfectly good stuff and buy new because its out dated, blah blah.

I have a good supply too. Before I started steaming eggs instead of boiling I would put some in the boiling water to help with peeling.

It was still cool this morning around 9 and I got part of my walk in. One of my flip flops was squeaking this morning when I got up. But the walk seemed to remedy that.

I didn't get anything to speak of done in the pantry room yesterday because I sprayed for the pantry moths and I didn't want to breathe the stuff. so back in there today to get a little more done.

I've actually found part of the floor in my office. I got a couple of bags of books taken to the cabin and shelved. DH thought I just dumped them on the floor, I have more respect for my books than that. I've got a couple more bags loaded up to take over there today. I still have many boxes in the camper that need to find shelves. Now I have to decide which ones to keep in my office and which ones to take to the cabin. My dear brother told me to do a little every day and it adds up. I've got several areas that I try to work on most days.

The newest hot water is doing fine, no leaking. The water is not really hot enough to wash dishes, so I still have to boil some in the hot pot. I'd rather do that and try to keep the electric bill down. The next reading is July 6.

We have an Ollie's near us and this week they have everything at 15% off. I stopped in this afternoon and picked up scalloped potato mixes, pasta, instant oatmeal, dish soap, pie filling, work gloves and spices. All were cheap to start with and the extra 15% was a bonus. Everything dated over a year out. I was quite pleased with my little haul.

One of the local grocery stores was having a major sale on a wide variety of food so off we went. The store was surprisingly well stocked and prices were good. Stocked up on a number of items and saved quite a bit of money. I've also been dehydrating a mix of veggies and fruit this week. Been a productive so far.

I remember reading about ..the Spanish flu and how they used baking soda in a glass of water....to change the PH level of the body and those who did that did not get sick or had a very mild case of the flu.. it is also also said to work for other colds and flu.. I believe arm and hammer published a booklet/ pamphlet about it back in the 20's or 30's..

Makes me wonder if it would have that same effect on all these virus infections..could it be that easy....might be worth a try..
I bet the information it is still on the web somewhere

My daughter and granddaughter both got to go home from the hospital yesterday. Prayers were answered and we do appreciate them.

I have been freezing peaches and the last of the blueberries. The freezers are very full. It is hard to find spaces for them.

I have been weeding the gardens. We have had a couple of nice days with low humidity. I have gotten a lot done. The gardens are in need of rain badly. I am going to have to get out my drip water jugs.

While shopping for premmie for granddaughter, I ran into Belks. I bought the only sleeper in her size in the store. But the lightning was what floored me. The front of the store had lights on as usual, but the further back in the store you went the darker it was. Only a light here and there was on as you left the front of the store. I could see, but needed to use my phone light to see sizes. I guess maybe they were saving on electricity, but shopping was not made easier. I also went to JC Penny's and Walmart. I found a little at each store. With what I bought and 2 great aunts brought to her, she will be fine till she grows into her newborn stuff. I never found the little gowns that close at the bottom. The sleeper from Belks seemed to be the nicest quality. I was disappointed in the choices at the other stores. So many ugly clothes.

We are meeting with hubbys family and the buyer of his parents house at the closing company today. I am glad to see that be over. The boys will not have to mow and do maintenance any more.

After reading more in the monkeypox thread, yesterday, I made out a list of all the OTC med's to get on my next shopping trip. I'll have several on hand just in case, along with the baking soda.

Mom called late yesterday afternoon telling me that my aunt (her oldest sister, 89 yrs. old) fell and broke her hip. She was taken to our local medical center, but they turned her away, saying that they didn't have room for her. WTH! This is a huge medical complex. Come to find out, parts of this huge complex is closed, because of a shortage of nursing staff and workers. They (a lot of the nurses and staff) refused the C-vax, and left. So, my aunt was sent 60 miles away to a smaller less equiped hospital for hip replacement surgery. Mom is absolutely beside herself, because she can't go be with her. I think the surgery will be today sometime, and if things go badly for my aunt, well have to take Mom to the hospital, so she can be with her. They are extremely close.

I've got ground beef all cooked getting ready to can it. I told Mom that, once the canner got to going, I wouldn't be able to leave it, until it finished. Hopefully, I can get this done without there being a problem.

Looks like I'm going to be forced to cut DH's hair. He hates when it gets long enough to curl. I've cut it for him twice in the past and he complained both times, and then I told him I was not going to cut it anymore. He made a special trip to walmart the other day to get it cut and their front door, that rolls up is broken and will only got two or three feet up. so he come back home with his curls still intact. His wife of 49 years cut it for him but she went to beauty school.

I've got several sets of sheets that need to be packed away, but I want to wash them first. It kills my shoulder to fold sheets. And then there is the "do I try to hang them out or put them in the dryer". I washed a load of towels the other day and put them in the dryer.

When I was very young I had chickenpox. I think Mom used calamine lotion on me to stop the itching. It might be a good addition to the preps. I use it now for rashes and bites that I get in the garden.

Mom was, and still is, a firm believer in calamine lotion for skin problems. I have that as one of the meds to get. IIRC, that's what she used on me and my sister when we had chicken pox, too. I also need a good supply of a steroidal anti-itch cream and some antibacterial cream. I have neosporin, but it needs to be replaced. I also have a few essential oils on hand as well.

I gathered a small basket of tomatoes this morning, and have the canner going. I'm trying to get all the ground beef and other meat that can be canned canned up out of this old freezer, so it can be emptied. I just don't trust it with being full of anything. We watered again, yesterday, and we're hoping for rain later today, tonight, and tomorrow. Cary has just about finished with the mountainous pile of firewood. Cutting, splitting, and stacking into the wood shed. Once that's finished, he can take a break from working on firewood for awhile. He needs one more cord to replace what we used over the winter. There's already a tree waiting to be cut, but he's going to wait till it cools a bit this Fall.

My wonderful mechanic couldn't get the parts to fix my car, so he cobbled it back together and made it run anyway. :) I think before this is over with, everybody is going to be wishing they had a "good 'ol boy" mechanic.
My trip to WM didn't start out too well because I managed to forget both my grocery list, and my big cooler. I only forgot 2 things, so I didn't do too badly. I stocked up on OTC itch medications, and got some more disposable gloves --- all of which I will have to hide from dh because he wastes them.
WM had some different store brand ice cream in the big plastic containers that they haven't had in years. So I was reading the entire list of ingredients to make sure it wasn't low fat, and at the very bottom it said, "Made from bio-engineered products"
No thanks. I put it back and paid $1 more for a smaller container of Pet. Can't let dh run out of ice cream on a holiday weekend.
I can't get dh's prescriptions refilled until next week so I hope things hold together for awhile longer.

You might look online at The Children's Place or Carter's for clothes for your granddaughter. Sometimes they run excellent deals, and you earn points when you buy from them. I still have little ones at home, and I save a ton of money by shopping their sales. The quality of their clothing is pretty good too. Their shoes and boots are good as well.

Well I spent two days at son's. Then had the county 4-H meeting for pre-fair. Holy smokes. They want everything online now and over next couple years they are going to the code thing you read with a smart phone.
Constant comments were made about older generation doesn't want to embrace technology..but kids need their screen time..
Uh no.
They are giving the registered leaders a walk in pass. This means you park about half mile away, walk in gate at the opposite end of the fair, then walk all the way to the 4h building.
That won't work for me. I use a cane and have a handicap placard. So they are going to see what they can do.
Things are much more complicated this year and it's obvious it's due to short staffed and not enough money for paperwork.
Our group isn't even doing any livestock.
Anyway. I reckon we will get thru it but not sure about next year.

Judy, just put a bowl on his head and cut around it..lol..I know just kidding. I cut hubs hair since we were married and he cuts mine.

Got another tater patch ready to pull. It's been very dry. Garden is doing well even so.
I stocked up on a few things. It's mainly butter, and condiments I need to lay in more of.

Check out a YouTube or two, and it will go better. My hubby's hair curls, too, and it took me a long time to figure out how to do a decent cut, but since he's a farmer and always has a hat on, he didn't mind much! Plus, unless you literally take a chunk out, any slight goofs smooth out in a day or two!

Our oldest son is dating a beautician who is really talented. She offered to bring her tools and cut anyone's hair who needed it... about a week after we'd all done home cuts! LOL! Hubby was the only one who took advantage of the offer...

What do you recommend? DH has to be very careful too. He had shingles in his left eye that left scaring.

I use Bausch & Lomb Advanced Eye Relief eye wash solution. It's what my eye specialist recommended for me. He told me not to use it no more than I absolutely had to, because it can cause my eyes to be even dryer and feel grittier. That doesn't make much sense, but that's what he told me for my personal eye condition.

Well, its cut and he looks pitiful, I did not do that on purpose. Good thing he wears a hat all the time. For his age at 78, his hair is very dark, so each little faux pau shows up.

I got tired of Cary complaining about his hair each and every time I gave him a haircut, so I make him go to Walmart or a barber now. He bought a set of hair cutting tools, but I've never tried to use it. I'd probably scalp him with the thing! I would never hear the end of that! :ld:

I cut DH's hair, but I just shave it, so I can't mess it up. The first time I cut it, I forgot to put the guard on the clippers. He had a reverse Mohawk. I cried, and he laughed and had me shave it. I felt so bad. I am very careful with trimming his beard though.

Thanks for posting this! I bought that at Target.com just last week. Out here in the country I am forever getting unknown flying things in my eyes, dust, etc., even when just walking around, and I needed something more up to the task than just grabbing a little bottle of Refresh Tears to flush out my eyes.

It's nice to know I may actually have bought a good thing!

The one they stock also comes with a little eye cup. I bought several :-)

Yeah. I like that little cup! On a regular basis, like 2-4 times/daily, I use Refresh Optive Mega-3 lubricant eye drops. It's enhanced with flaxseed oil. That works for me to keep my eyes lubricated regularly. I have severe dry eyes.

Another canning question.......Have any of you canned Polish Kielbasa or other smoked sausages? If so, how do you do it? My canning book says that I need to cut it into chunks, cook it, then hot pack it in jars with boiling broth or water. I like to cook kielbasa in with kraut or cabbage, and cooking it before canning it would cook all the juices out of it that would normally be cooked in the kraut and cabbage. How do ya'll compensate for this? Am I making any sense? Would it be best to not can it at all?

Does it call for covering the sausage with water in the jars? Just reserve your "cooking water", and use it in the jars.

Or heat it through in the oven or even microwave... assuming you are using the precooked sausage available in the store, the only reason is so it's heated through to the center when packing it.

If you are using "fresh" sausages, you'll need to precook...

Yeah. I'm using the pre-cooked sausages. It says to heat/cook the sausages and cover in boiling water or broth in the jars.

Duh! I see what you're saying. The water I cook the sausages in is what I use to fill the jars.......Just use that same liquid when cooking cabbage or kraut!

Thanks, Summerthyme, for that "lightbulb" moment!

Levi and I pulled about a 5 gal bucket of taters that we planted by the cabin. All reds. It was just a small patch.
Kid I showed how to make bread, sent home with fresh vegetables etc, has left it all sitting on the counter all week so they could take a short vacation to Chicago.
I've done this before and they end of tossing it because it goes bad sitting for a month.
I won't do that again.

Got mashed potatoes and potato salad done, homemade. For tomorrow. Son has to work all weekend so invited him over tomorrow for a little 4th dinner. Spicy chicken wings, baked beans, corn on cob. Ice cream for desert.
It looks like some of the other cukes may have that wilt disease. But I have a good bit coming up in cabin yard. Have to look at it tomorrow. We are also in a semi drought too. I have been watering twice a day.

Quick - try and see if the Southern Joint Replacement Center in Nashville might be willing to take her.
It might be far to take her - but if they will take her, there is no better place in this region for that surgery.
