I'm moving closer to letting DH put a small ac in my office. Problem is I have to move a lot of stuff including part of my desk to not block the window. The window itself is low. This is going to take some thought on my part. This room is also my library and its the hottest room in the house.

.... And as soon as I let the dog out and fill the hummingbird feeders and let the dog in and start the washer so the grandson has clothes to wear (dang growth spurts!) and fix French Toast for the grandson and feed the stray cat and let the dog out to finish the stray cat's breakfast and fix more French toast (did I mention a growth spurt?) and let the dog in and gather up the wet towels (that boy takes more baths than he needs - water baby, he is) and find more zinnia seeds to replant and copy down a recipe for dandelion jelly and make more hummingbird feed and put the wet clothes in the dryer 'cause his Mama's gonna be here soon so no time to line dry and find some gardening clothes so I can replant where some things didn't come up and.....

I really hope it gets hot this afternoon so I have a good excuse to come in and take a nap under the ceiling fan - 'cause I think I'm going to need one

Okay - clothes are in the dryer - one thing off my list  I don't have to go back to work until Tuesday evening, so I should be able to get all that stuff done, plus a few more things - I need to gather up the grandsons' outgrown clothes, run 'em through the washer, and pack them up to donate, carry down a bunch of boxes of home canned stuff to the basement store room and find a place to put them.

Well, I walked away from the computer for a minute.... not quite 3 hours ago  I was dealing with the boys and the dog and the stray cat and the tame cats and some phone calls and the laundry and the rest of the stuff on my list. And then Hubby asked if we had any more salmon so I went looking for it in the pantry; handed him the can and then started organizing the pantry instead of whatever in the heck I'd been doing because things had been put in there willy-nilly, and - oh look - SQUIRREL!! In between all of that, daughter picked up the boys and dog and Hubby took out the trash and brought up a load of towels I'd thrown in the washer and forgotten about so I folded them and I don't remember what else because I was back standing in front of the pantry sorting types of canned tomatoes and muttering about making peanut butter cookies because I had a jar that was about expire when he called me to lunch...

I think maybe it's time for that nap

I have been hit with shingles. I saw the doctor on Wednesday and since there no rash he thought kidney stone. On Friday afternoon I broke out in a nice read rash after the office closed. I'm ok the rash isn't huge and I have pain meds plus benadryl so we're good. Ugh.
I did laundry, watered the garden and I'm going to work in the pantry. I can sit for most of it. DH has taken over fixing food since I'm not hungry. We'll manage.
Hope everyone has
a great day!

Worked on weeding the carrots this morning. They take forever - more than any other crop, I think. DH and I are working on doing some cleaning and organizing to have a place ready for his sister that is coming Friday.

Our green beans got eaten by something, and hadn't really sprouted well, so we are replanting. I should get a crop about September-October, which might be timed better - maybe I'll feel like canning by that point.

DS and DIL's beautiful garden got decimated by groundhogs!!!! They caught the critters on a game cam they had set up. Destroyed about half of their garden. She was absolutely disgusted over it. She took photos on her phone, and showed them to us, today. Her cukes, part of her squash, green beans, some tomatoes, and potatoes all destroyed.

There is still time to plant those again if she feels like it. I'm so sorry!

I'm sorry to hear about the shingles. They are no fun. My 82 yr old mom just got over them a few months ago. She really had it rough, too. I'll be praying for you.

I had them a year ago, I think it was. If you get in they'll likely prescribe a short course of steroids and an antiviral...the antiviral can reduce the duration. I think the antiviral has to be within 3 days, but not 100% sure.

I hope yours doesn't get worse...mine did (trigeminal nerve around my eye and up into my scalp; my ear on that side still bothers me and it may have affected my hearing a bit). I got several topical gels/meds for mine, and honestly, I think good old calamine lotion probably did the best.

It was not pleasant. Prayers going up for you!

I managed to can 7 pints of chicken and dehydrated 5 lbs of frozen stir fry veggies. That was the fun part.

Then Friday night I found that my bank account had been hacked and cleaned out. That was not fun. The bank office was open Saturday morning so I have new account numbers, a new debit card (the hacking was my online banking, not my debit card), new checks ordered, a new login name and password, and will have to wait until Accounting comes in on Tuesday to get the money back in my account. Talk about a heart stopping moment when I opened the account and looked at the balances!!! Now I have to contact all the direct deposit people (2) and all the direct debit people (5), and change the payment methods on four different accounts I do manually every month. Plus I will be changing the passwords on all of my financial accounts for good measure. I will also need to check my credit report to make sure nobody is taking credit cards out in my name. Everything was done from the 14th-17th. So keep an eye on any online accounts you have.

We've had that happen to us, twice! A huge PITA.

Busy weekend here. Went to the thrift store, Walmart and pawn shop in one large swing yesterday. Was able to add a number of items to the pantry, shop, etc. Did some dehydrating plan to do more this week. Friend and I are splitting a good size order of mylar bags and o2 absorbers. Went to the range and got the remaining rifles sighted in so now all the long guns are good to go. Got some yard work done as well. Tired but feeling like I made some progress this weekend. Hope everyone is well, stay safe all.

With the high heat, I got my lazy backside to hooking up a timer to water the garden area. Wife got some flowers for the bed in front of the house a few weeks ago. I cheated and put in in-ground sprinklers there...manually operated, but no need to swelter out in the heat.
No power-aid in the store to restock, so will be pulling some out of storage to fill out the pantry for the next few weeks. Perhaps more will be available by then...or the heat won't be as intense, either will do.
Been re-caulking around the house early in the day. Evenings belong to the mosquitos.

Not only is it hot as hell but now our directv has gone out. They are sending a technician out on Tuesday. Its too hot to even think, much less read a book. Unfortunately DH and I do not have the same taste in movies. At lease with something to watch we can sort of veg out in the heat. Stupid to be so dependent on something.

The day started out nice, we went out to eat to get chicken livers. Did a reasonable shop at a different than normal walmart. There were absolutely no hot dogs to be had, the entire section was down. Good thing I have some in the freezer.

I got one more small load of laundry done and on the porch rail before we went out to lunch. A nice father's day meal for DH.

I did get two more cases of pickled beets, I'm up to five cases. Got some more of DH's mango drink. They didn't have a lot of it but we each got four bottles. He has agreed to start drinking some gatoraid too.

Tech - here is a recipe for a home-made rehydration beverage that we used in Home Health - it's like a home-made sports drink. Once the weather starts getting hot, we make about one batch a day - more if the grandsons are here. It's pretty hot where Hubby works; and if I'm out in the heat, I drink it then.

1 pkg of regular no sugar added Kool-Aid, your choice of flavors (I've also used True Lemon/Lime/Orange)
1/8 teaspoon of salt substitute - we use 'Nu Salt' - it needs to say 'potassium chloride' as the ingredient on the container.
3/8 teaspoon table salt (I use sea salt)
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 gallon water
Put the first four ingredients in a 1/2 gallon container, shake to mix. Add the 1/2 gallon of water and stir until all ingredients are dissolved.

If I'm not using something with citric acid in it (Kool Aid), I can cut the sugar back to 1/4 cup.

You can use any type of a sports bottle, or Dollar Tree has some Gatorade in bottles that have a top that you twist to open to drink; they are 24 oz bottles and were still a dollar the last time I went in. We put our initials on the bottom so the bottles don't get mixed up. When the temp hits 90* or above and I'm working outside, I alternate a bottle of the homemade stuff with either water or 50/50 lemonade and water to keep myself hydrated.

Living rural, one thing I missed in my preps and just acquired is a replacement submersible pump as a backup. I have three to four unused hand pumps, but if I retain electricity and my pump goes out, then water for the house is down. It was one of those things I completely overlooked, but thanks to Amazon, I have a spare arriving sometime this week.

Both of my vehicles decided to quit at the same time. :bhd: Managed to get the truck to the shop, but I think the car is going to have to go on the wrecker...
It was 60 degrees yesterday morning, 50 this morning --- and the high all day was only in the mid 70's. I guess we're going to have a couple days of spring after all. It's been right at 100 degrees since the last week of May.
I've got a big crater in the front of the barn that I have been putting gravel in forever, but that is expensive, and too hard on my back, so I started putting every spare rock I find in it. For some reason, that doesn't meet with the puppy and barn cats approval, and the cat has pulled out all the decorative rock I had left over from another project. The puppy has strown the river rock all over the yard. I have strange animals...

Picking up commodities, I just called and they are giving them out even though its a holiday.

I'm throwing out all the peanut butter I had stored because its rancid. I should have known better, I guess it doesn't really keep all the long after all. I just ordered four jars of organic from Vitacost. I guess I'm going to have to keep those in the fridg. I use to keep my PB ind the fridg because I always bought the natural that you had to stir the oil in. Although its so much easier to spread if its not cold, oh well!

I've been out gathering green bell peppers from the garden this morning, along with canning, and doing laundry to line dry. I'm finally getting to sit down and relax for a minute.

I'm not looking forward to the heat wave we're going to be getting all week. Over 100 every day. That's without the heat index. No rain, so the gardens will get watered again, tomorrow. I hope it rains sometime soon, because 2 of our rain barrels are empty, and we're using out of our 650 gal rainwater tank now.

Our AZO order came this morning. That gives us another good stock of products. We use their D-Mannose daily along with their urinary tract cleanse for Cary.

Cary is still working on the mountain of a wood pile trying to get it all cut, split, and stacked. It's going to take him all summer to get it done, since he can only hold out in this heat to work on it very early in the mornings. I don't want him overdoing it.

We have had a groundhog problem in the garden ..not as bad as the one SB mentioned

DH found a product at Walmart called Repels-Al...it is granulated and you put it down and then water it lightly,
They it bothers their sinuses and they leave ??? We will see.
Our garden is fenced but it forces and dig it's way under and has really attacked some of the cukes..and the spinach and lettuce...we have other cukes and the spinach and lettuce were bolting due to the heat..so no great loss there.
Will let you know if it works..but worth a try. If it does it is a bonus.

DS caught their groundhogs on his game camera climbing over their fence. Fence is about 5 ft tall. DS has a live trap set for them. Don't know what he will do with them, once they are trapped. Didn't ask. I'll let them know about the product you mentioned.

SB..
We have a mulberry tree with a greatly inclined trunk..it is weirdly trimmed due to the power company...anyway DH caught a groundhog way up that tree..15 or more feet above the ground ....eating mulberries. It saw him ran down the tree as fast as it could. I didn't know they could climb trees

Its a Bonide product, I would bet it works.

I use Bonide MoleMax for Gophers, Moles, Voles, Armadillos, and other critters dig up the yard.
Comes in granuals. I use it in a fertilizer spreader before it rains.
Lawn used to be "spongy" when you walked on it. Much better now.
I need to watch for another day of rain before putting another treatment out.

What? Why OMG???

If things get as bad as I am anticipating, you will be HAPPY to eat groundhog!!

It is just like rabbit or squirrel, except it is quite a bit bigger. And has a LOT more meat on it!

If you are too "civilized" to eat wild game, you may indeed have a problem with what is coming down the pike!

I have no problem with eating wild game. I grew up eating squirrel, rabbits, deer, pheasant, and wild caught fish. I've even tasted raccoon and moose. I just never knew you could eat groundhog.

Squirrel stew, squirrel dumplings, fried rabbit with brown gravy and mashed potatoes, deer stew, deer roast, fried deer tenderloin with brown gravy, etc., smoked pheasant, all kinds of fried fish, baked raccoon with sweet potatoes, and moose roast.

We picked up commodities. We each got two bags of apples, but other than that nothing fresh and the box was pretty skimpy although I've not really looked through it yet. Some canned marshmellow stuff, never heard of it.

We also went to our regular wm. I did get hot dogs this time, one package of nathans, 4 pks of the bar s brand. I got a rotissarie chicken for 6.97, a small container of deviled egg potato salad for DH, i got several packages of the taco size low carb tortillas, I'm liking them better than the larger ones, cheaper too. They had two 12 bottle cases of topo-chico mineral water for 9.99 each and I thought that was a good price, I got both cases. I'd love to be able to drink it all the time but its for a treat. That's the first time I've seen the 12 glass bottle cases in a long time.

I did the last load of bedding, knit sheets. Put them out on the porch railing, and they are stiff as a board. I've got a load of towels that mostly need to go in the dryer and a pretty good size of personal cloths that do need to go in the dryer and I'm done with laundry.

When we got back from town today it didn't seem as horribly hot in the house as it did when we got home yesterday, but I think we got home a couple of hours earlier today.

Dh found a dvd set with 50 old westerns on it. One "The Red River Valley" with my child hood idol Roy Rogers, So that will give us something to watch today or rather have on in the background. The Directv repair person comes tomorrow.

I saw that map of potential blackouts and we are certainly in the bad area. I hope we don't have to deal with that but if we do we'll just deal with it. There are going to be some mighty sick people around here if it happens.

Gas was 4.40 a gallon and DH filled up. It was around $50 to do so.

We've still not installed the new hot water heater. We just don't feel pushed to do it, its amazing how we can adjust to things.

Well, Cary went to crank the lawn tractor this afternoon, and it wouldn't crank. He worked with it, and still couldn't figure out what was wrong. He called our small engine repairman, and has to take it to the shop in the morning. Good thing Cary got the yard mowed Saturday. Hopefully, it will be back home, before the yard needs mowing again.

Got my canning done. 4 more pints of ground beef. Afterwards, I chopped enough green bell peppers from the garden to fill half of a 1 gallon freezer bag for the freezer. I don't like using dehydrated peppers in everything. I like to keep fresh or frozen ones on hand for some things. I hope to finish filling the gallon bag in the next few days. I may have to put shade cloth on them, tomorrow, if they look like they're getting sun scorched. Cary went ahead and watered everything.

I absolutely love smoked pheasant, but no one around here raises them anymore. No one going on hunting trips out west/northwest in the family anymore, either. Oldest DS does order moose roasts, buffalo burgers, and smoked pheasant from time to time from a reputable company he knows.

I like raccoon too....I added that to my edit after you saw the original post.....

Fish, of course.
I've never tasted moose or elk. I have had pheasant once and it was AWESOME!!
Squirrel and rabbit lots of times....you should try using squirrel meat in a pasta salad......oh my GOSH!!! To die for!!

I AM CONSIDERING (oops!! didn't mean to yell!) raising some quail.....LATER. Got to see if things are going to be survivable first!!

Our water system comes from a water tower for this little area of the rural community via gravity flow, which should work fine. BUT it is pumped UP into the water tower by a pump on a generator......THERE could be the problem!! The lake is maybe a quarter mile from me, but it would be ALL UPHILL if I have to bring it up by hand.....and it is STEEP.....and I am 70 years old!!
