I remember really like ricearoni years ago, but then I quit eating rice. A year or so ago I ordered two cases in different flavors, but have not cooked any, yet.

I have a very deep pantry and don't need or really want anything. If and when I go to the grocery again there are a few things i'd like to replace, but I have enough that I don't really need to.

This afternoon I went out to the summer kitchen/camper porch and dug beans and rice out to thaw and then vacuum seal. Our friend was over and he said are you still doing that, and I told him I still have beans and rice in the freezer to do. In the last year or two we would get several 2# bags of rice and beans a month, I stashed most of it in the freezer. Some I either put in mylar or vacuum sealed in jars.

I just might have had a bit more energy today. Thank you Jesus.

We're back to taking old dirt out of the raised beds, and replacing with better organic materials. After all the rain, the soil is just right to work with. It's still a job, though. Cary is doing it all with a shovel and scoop. It's still really hot, temp wise, so he's only working on it first thing early mornings. The humidity is outrageous. When we go to small town, Thursday, he wants to stop in at TSC to see about getting one of those small hand tillers. A mantis, is what they're called, IIRC. Large Troybilt needs a new tire, and it will be ready to go. A mantis is just what we need for these raised beds.

Another large laundry load done, and hung on the line to dry. I'm having to watch the radar, since more rain is a possibility, today. I may have to do a "snatch and grab" if rain gets too close.

I think one of my bad teeth is trying to get infected. It hurts, and has my ear and neck hurting. My head also hurts. I don't have another dentist appt. until the 10th. I'm trying to hold out, til then, and he may have to go ahead and get it out, instead of waiting another month ( at least ) on the oral surgeon to do the rest of them. I'm only scheduled to have another filling done on the 10th, but things may have to change. I'm rinsing with warm salt water. Is there any other suggestions? I have clove essential oil, too.
If you’re growing Nasturtiums you could eat some leaves every day. I knocked out a mild Lyme infection doing that. I’ve also used a tincture of Nasturtium to keep down the infection in a tooth that probably needs a root canal.

Marseydoats: Cucumber sandwiches were eaten quite a lot..........in England...during WWII many rural folks ate beetroot sandwiches.......saw a documentary which cooked a lot of English WWII dishes...meat wasn't plentiful unless you had a farm to raise it yourselves........rabbit was pushed as domestic meat supply......takes up little space...but many of the families treated the bunnies like pets and couldn't bring themselves to eat 'em........guess they weren't hungry ENOUGH.........

I love cucumber sandwiches! Just peel and slice thin longways with mayo, salt, and pepper. We've always grown cukes, so most of the time they were plentiful. Never knew where the idea came from, just that they are good. Same with tomato, mayo, and onion sandwiches.

Using the raw garlic juice all day, yesterday, may have lots to do with the fact that my tooth isn't hurting this morning. It's still sore, but seems to be lots better. If I wasn't going to be going out, today, I would use it again, today. But, Cary has a doctor's appt. this afternoon, and I don't want to go smelling like garlic. I'll use it, once I get back home, though. I had forgotten that raw garlic is a natural antibiotic. I had a RN tell me one time that she used raw garlic juice for an ear infection, and it cleared it right up. She just kept a few drops in her ear, until it was healed. I'm all for natural healing as long as it works. Natural healing is what I go to first, then to the doctor if I need to. My problem is remembering all the natural remedies. I've got a few books around here, somewhere, that I need to dig out. I'm sure it would do me good to take a refresher course, and read through them again.

I have been asking husband for 6 weeks to help me move the temporary fence that I put up so the livestock could eat all the grass in the barnyard. We used to cut it for hay, but it's about half weeds now, and neither of us is able. We don't have a lawnmower and I was going to go buy one and I figured that I'd better ask him first and he said he wouldn't help me unload it if I bought one (we have no bank I could back up to)
It would have taken 30 minutes with husband being the brains and me the brawn --- I can't figure out how to run the wire. I can put the posts in just fine by myself. Well he refuses to help me do anything and I thought I could do it by myself.. It took me 45 minutes to just get the wire re-strung. I still have posts to pull up and excess wire to put back on the spool, but at least I can bring that in the kitchen and do it in the ac...
And then when he finally gets out of bed, he will have a cussing fit at me and tell me I did it wrong. I know he doesn't feel good, but neither do I, and having to do everything by myself got old a long time ago.
I don't usually start buying winter hay until next month when it starts cooling off, for fear of fire, but we are is such a drought and have a severe shortage, I thought I'd better start early.

Prayers for your safety, briches; and for the safety of your students. I thought our boys went back to school on the 18th, but it is the 15th - it seems so early!

Yes, you can add meat to Rice-a-Roni, SB. I don't use the RaR so much since I like the Knorr packets, but they do make a good base for skillet meals. Ground beef, chunks of cooked beef (left over roast), chicken, cooked sausage, etc...

I had looked in 7 different stores to find the Nu-Salt we use to make homemade sports drink; hadn't been able to find it, then thought about a small, locally owned store in my work town. Had to go to town to do my weekly covid test anyway, so dashed by there and found that they had plenty of it in stock, so I picked up 4 containers. They have an in-store bakery as well, so I picked up a small blackberry pie to divvy up into three servings to carry in my work lunches for the next three days. They also make these yummy banana bread cookies - they are about 4 inches across, soft, chewy, and loaded with walnuts - somehow a package of those came home with me as well  . Note to self - stop by that store when you get off work Friday or Saturday morning.

I popped in to Rural King and added another 100 pounds of sugar to the stockpile - I'm going through 3-4 cups a day keeping the hummingbird feeders filled. The feeders have 6 ports, and sometimes there is a bird at every port. I also picked up 2 cases of canned cat food, and 2 bags of dry kitten food while I was there.

I needed to pick up more B-12 for my work locker, so stopped at CVS to see if they had any decent deals going - they had a vitamin deal on their brand - buy one, get one for 99 cents - that saved me $12.50 on one bottle; plus I had a $4.50 off CVS brand vitamins (I think I'm going to stop in again later in the week as it wasn't a deal attached to my card.) I also found Ensure on sale for Hubby - don't remember exactly what the deal was - maybe BOGO, but I got it for $6.59/6 ct; and I had a $5 CVS diet/nutrition coupon that dropped the cost more.

Well, I just went out to refill the humming bird feeders and noticed that it's almost 11:30 - where did this morning go?!? I think the banana cookie I ate is putting me to sleep, so I'm heading to bed to catch a pre-work nap while I'm already drowsy.

Take care all; have a safe day!!

I don't usually keep boxed food items like R-R on my pantry shelves for too long. Bug and weevil issues, but if we like the R-R made with the ground beef, I will buy a few more to try. I might stock up on them, eventually, and keep them in my freezer for safe keeping. I don't know why I haven't thought of R-R as a meal, before. It just makes sense.

Speaking of those banana cookies. I had a recipe for homemade banana bread cookies with lemon poppy seed icing. Those things were to die for!!!!! Somehow, the recipe has disappeared. I went looking for it about a month ago.

I have started cutting up the boxes on rice a roni and cutting open the packages of knorr and other such packaged and boxed stuff...and stuff the front of of the box and directions in a vacumn seal bag ..rice for rice a roni in a sandwich bag with a slit in it and suck and seal this stuff. .once the oxygen is removed it will last a long time.. ..seems like my grocery store has them on sale all the time..for a great price..

I have found I really need to cut the packages open or mostly open to get them to seal hard as a brick..even the seasoning packages..I just settle down in of the TV with a move on and begin cutting them up....then vacumn seal a bunch at a time.

Knorr has a website that has a recipe for each flavor that will turn it into a full one pot meal...I have been copying the recipes on cards in case the web goes down

A few packages with a can/jar of meat each can make some pretty good meals ....you can always add more dehydrated veggies and more spices ..even veggie powders to them..adding a lot if variety to storage foods. If things get really difficult the more varieties will really make things more pleasant and these rather quick meals will be a big help if there are a lot of other things to get done

Boxed items for long term storage really needs help with keeping the bugs and weevils out. If I'm going to be keeping boxed items on the shelf for longer than a couple of months, I store them in my freezer, or open and put into canning jars and seal, along with the directions. There is just too much to lose to take a chance on critters and bugs getting into it. I try not to keep boxed items too long to start with. I'm obssevive about keeping pantry moths out.

I'm glad I found out about the Rice-a-Roni meals. I'm always looking to add more variety to my storage food menu. They go on sale at our local Walmart all the time. I'll add a few.

I agree with the canning jar idea. .I have some buckets so the vacuum seal bags take less space than jars...I can get 20 to 30 vacumn sealed packages in a 7 gallon bucket. ..so big space saving...

. I have started to get Bear Creek soup mixes and opening and putting quart jars and adding dehydrated various veggies, onions, a bit of garlic, lentils and barley and more spices to their mixes..even a bit of veggie powder...of course what I add depends on the flavor...but it all fits in the jar.. then of course I will add canned meat to increase the protein ....

I got a book on amazon about meals in jars and none that I really want the exact ones they mention..but I can adapt some of their ideas to things we like...so I have been thinking about making up some jars of one pot meals to put on the shelf to have a lot of spiced dried stuff ready to go in busy times..kind of just add meat and water or a can of soup and you are done. ..dehydrating the frozen veggies and veggie powders have really given me ideas...

Your way of sealing it up is great, too. I just prefer using all the canning jars I have. Point is to keep everything safe. I sorta cringe when I hear of boxed foods just being left to chance after so much money has been spent. I remember, back years ago, opening a box of cake mix I had forgotten about on a shelf. Had everything already in the bowl to make the cake, and dumped the box of mix in, and it was working alive with weevils. That lesson did it for me, and I have tried hard not to let that happen to my storage food ever since. Yeah, I'm paranoid about it.

I haven't tried any of the Bear Creek soups, but have 2 variety cases of the Frontier Soup mixes. I do the same, and add some of my own ingredients. With mine, you always have to add your own meat. I'm running out of room for jars, so I keep the soup mixes in the freezer in a large bag.

Last year I bought some boxes of banana muffin mix. Made one batch and they were great. Put one box on the shelf and the other boxes sealed in a bucket with a tight lid and put it in the she shed. I was going to make some muffins as a treat for DH and opened the box from the shelf and it was extremely nasty. Got another box out of the bucket and its contents are pristine. I put it in the refrigerator because the mood to make muffins had passed.

Thanks for the tip on the Knorr's website recipes, hd5574; I'll take a look!!

Well, I put my right knee on my mattress to climb into bed for my pre-work nap this afternoon, turned just a bit and heard a little pop - couldn't straighten my leg without pain, and weight bearing was a total no-go. I played the same game a couple of weeks ago and just I gave it a little bit of time and I could move it. This time, I gave it two hours, but it didn't get any better, the pain was worse, and I was scheduled to work. I sent the Boss a text telling him I was heading for the ED; then called Hubby, who came to get me and took me out to the ED. Which was jam packed - 2 hours in the waiting room; followed by 2 more in a recliner in an ER hallway - which was spent trying not to listen to an young man in the next recliner who had an extremely limited vocabulary - a good 75% of which was the F bomb, 10% threats toward staff, and another 15% of whining because he hadn't been seen yet and was hungry  . X-ray showed nothing fractured (yeah, neither one of my previous tibial plateau fractures showed up on X-ray - but did on MRI). Something tells me my knee replacement may end up happening sooner than I'd planned...

Well, my eyes are closing - probably thanks to the Norco; Oh Boy - weird dreams starting in 3...2...1...

Take care all; stay safe out there!!

DH has had a hip replacement and started having trouble with his knees...he was taking turmeric...and not getting relief....so we switched brands to Natures Way..the difference is remarkable. .this brand really seems to "fix" him ..he is blown away with the difference...I don't hear him complaining any more. ...might be worth a try before the knife....

Praying for you, Renee. I hope the dreams weren't too bad and you were able to get some rest.

Well husband came out and grudgingly helped me bring livestock in at feeding time --- it was still over 100 degrees. One of the babies didn't like it that I had moved the fence and had a snorting fit. Otherwise I don't think hubby would have noticed it. He told me I didn't do it right and he didn't even notice the hay...

Thank you all for the prayers - whatever had gone out of place managed to put itself back in to place sometime during the night. Darn thing is still sore, but I can walk without the walker; that works for me. The ACL in that leg snapped years ago, and the ortho I was stuck with at the time said he didn't thinks surgery to repair it would be worthwhile "because I wasn't an athlete." I do not see that ortho now.

The dreams weren't too bad - I was harvesting beets, and harvesting beets, and - oh yeah, harvesting beets  Lots and lots and lots of beets, and they were all different colors. I was getting cranky because I didn't have enough different containers to sort them by color, and woke up mad as heck at Hubby because he wouldn't go to Wal-Mart and get me some plastic tubs :lkick: Tell you what - I'm definitely NOT ever going to plant that many beets; and I'm going to settle for just my red, yellow and orange ones - I was plumb wore out by sorting all those colors...

hd5574, I had tried tumeric in the past, but it caused problems with my blood pressure; but I thank you for the idea. I'd much rather use natural substances if possible, but that one sure didn't love me. I've got some collegen stuff I probably need to try again.

I'll start calling the ortho office at 0800 - anybody wanna start a pool on how long it takes me for my call to be picked up?? Note to self - go find your phone charger, you're gonna need it!!

I hope you got a good night's rest, Renee. I'll be praying that your knee heals right up, and no surgery required.

Let me tell ya. That raw garlic juice healed my tooth right up. Anyone who has a tooth that seems to be getting an infection, try it! Any infection.......! This is one natural remedy I'll be sure and remember.

Cary got a good report from his neurologist, yesterday. Doesn't have to go back for another year. He also got his year's prescription.

While in big town, we stopped in at our favorite Mexican place and ate supper. It had been a good while, since eating there, and we were hungry. Filled up on some great food. The price had increased a bit, but not that much. The biggest increase in the price was the 2 glasses of wine we had. If we had not ordered that, we wouldn't have noticed much in the way of a price increase. I hate to see what the bill for our next wine cabinet restock will look like!!!!! We've had to cut way back on how much we drink, already.

Today is grocery shopping day in small town. We are going in Cary's Jeep, so he can pull the trailer. If TSC has the small tiller he wants, we'll have a way to haul it back home. If they don't, he'll get them to order it for him. We also need to get more bags of garden soil and cow manure to finish filling the raised beds. I think Cary said we need 16 more bags. If it's too much to get the job done, we'll have it on hand when we do need it. Hopefully, they will still have it out. Being the end of the season, that might be "iffy".

Grocery shopping will be just to replace what I've used, except for sale items I can use if I come across some. I do need to get another floor fan if they still have those out. We only have the one, and ya'll all know the saying, "One is none.......". We have an extra one out in my mini barn, but it is too big for our purpose.

We got a couple of days with a break in the drought and temps, but we're going back into triple digit heat index again for the foreseeable future........I'm waiting on Fall!

Had a good storm yesterday then nice rain most of the night. Took boys to library then had to go all the way into town to drop off one paper for 4-H.
More rain today but no errands except hubs plans to take jeep into small town to get a couple good used tires.
If it clears off later will get the boys to help pick beans. There's a ton.
Just piddling today thank the good Lord.

If you happen to have an old freezer that no longer works, it makes a good dry storage. We've been doing this for many a year with an old one that quit. Never a problem.

That's exactly what I want to do with this old 40+ yr. old one that I'm trying to empty, but Cary fusses everytime I mention doing that. I want to use it for dry storage. He thinks it's a waste not to keep it running just to keep odd and end frozen items in. I told him I would, but will never have it more than half full at one time. I just can't see having a 40+yr. old freezer full just to have it quit on me. What if there isn't another one available at that time? Then, what will I do with a freezer full of food that is thawing? He won't let me go ahead, and get a new one, either. Sometimes, I just want to pinch his head off, LOL!

Well, Cary decided he would call down to TSC to see if they have the tiller he wants in stock. They didn't, so he just ordered one from them. Yay!!!! It's a small mantis type tiller that will be just right to use in all our raised beds. We'll save the big Troybilt for the area of our backyard we plan to use as a garden spot next year. All it needs is a new tire, and it will be good to go. He needs to go ahead and order that, too.

That 40 year old freezer may be using more power than a new one would. We have a Kill-o-Watt (or something named like that) meter that you plug an appliance in to, and then plug the meter into the plug it; it will tell you how much energy the appliance is using - it was an eye opener. If we can ever get it emptied - by which I mean the shed freezer and space in the store room both - we will be moving the chest freezer from the shed to the basement.

Hubby has decided - after several trips to the basement and back upstairs this morning that I would have normally been the one making - that we need a house that is all on one level. We have plenty of ground so could build another one, but if so, I want one that is at least partially underground. We have an area that would be appropriate for it; well, a few areas, but the one I'm thinking about would be close to the current house. We could easily live on just the main level of this house if we moved the washer and dryer upstairs - and the cats, too, I suppose - those are the things that cause the most stair use.

Gently suggest to Cary that he not use the Miracle grow - the salts in those types of fertilizers can build up in the soil and cause as many problems as not having fertilizer. The composted manure will be a help.

Renee, Cary and I have discussed many times about what we'd do if we ever have to rebuild our house. We would have a one room cabin, off grid, with a root cellar of some sort. We already live in a very small house, so a one room cabin wouldn't be a big change for us.

On the old freezer, I know it's probably wasting energy. The seal around the lid is about shot, so it's not sealing good. Ice keeps forming in a spot there. That's why I want it unplugged, once it's empty.

I think he learned his lesson this year about using only MiracleGro. Nothing has done well, plus the soil wasn't tended properly. We're both making a big push to make sure everything is set for next year. I'm still waiting on our weather to cool, before planting Fall mustard and turnips.

We went to Wednesday night church. They have it in the fellowship hall and have a round table discussion, I like that.

My knee is giving me fits again, stiff and looks swollen. It was like that last night at church. I took a night off from my supplements, but I'll taken them all tonight. We are going to the va tomorrow, DH has a couple of appointments and I'm getting blood work done and an xray of my leg.

DH is out working on some fencing that the goats bent down, our big billy puts his front legs on the fence and bends it down, DH is replacing some with wooden fencing.

As for me, its back to doing what I can get done to further organize.

We're back, with shopping done for another 2 weeks. Stores were full to over stocked. Some aisles had pallets blocking them. I'm still not seeing shortages of anything anywhere. It was the same when we went to Sam's the other day. I only bought a few extras for storage this time. Packets of instant mashed potatoes were on sale for $1. I got 5 of those. I bought another flat of purple hull peas, 2 cans of Bacon Spam, another bottle of shampoo, and a bottle of conditioner. Everything else was regular stuff, plus a long handled brush to clean the bathtub and a large sponge and a floor fan. $366 and some change. Considering all the extra non-food items I bought and the extra for storage, I don't think that was all that bad. It was a 2 week supply. We absolutely don't go back for more during the week. If we run out of something, we do without, till the next 2 week shopping trip comes around. I always try to make sure we have enough to last. OTOH, I remember when that price would almost buy our groceries for a month!

Cary bought 21 large bags of gardening soil just to make sure we have plenty. I have no idea how much manure. He bought alot of other items for the garden, but I wasn't with him, so don't know what all it was. He just loaded it all in the trailer, paid for it, and brought it home. He just unloaded it. I hope our tiller comes in soon, and doesn't get caught up in the shortages.

So DH and I decided to get into better shape. So far we updated the hikers. We're in Hawaii so no waffle stompers but a cross between them and a running shoe. The support for the arch and ankle made a huge difference. Starting with short hikes. I found it a good refresher for a bug out. Recent notes to self: bring more water, snacks are good, don't leave the first aid kit in the car, a rain poncho, sun screen, mole skin(?) and add more OTC analgesics to the list.

Went to a Emergency Preparedness Event. Dang! If a person showed up with a pulse and some cognitive activity they were handed a windup flashlight/radio, a small BOB with an LED head lamp, packaged water and other goodies! No charge. No entrance fee. Not only that I got a quick refresher course in CPR. Wow has that changed especially when dealing with infants and small kids. Another note: update skills!

Sales of shelf safe foods that were to be had just six months ago here are now ancient history. I see something at a good price, (good being relative) I grab several, if available and it doesn't blow the budget.

...but made wonderful pies.. the crust still gives me fits...
So did my aunt and grandma. Their pies always had beautifully decorated crusts around the edges and the edges were never burnt. Mom would compliment MIL on them and ask how she did it? MIL never told her but Mom went into the kitchen to help do the dishes one time and saw the round decorative molds for the pie crust edges.

It's never boring around here, LOL! Just as I opened the back doors this morning, A big frog came jumping into the house. Pandamonium ensued!!!! It hit my bare foot on it's way in. Frisco, our dog was right behind it. Oh My Stars! It was showdown time! Cary had to chase that thing all over the laundry room, and finally, it went back out the door. Then, there was calm. :D Now, I have to bring order back out of the chaos all that caused. Laundry room is disorganized to say the least! :strs:

Well, after this morning's fiasco, we managed to get the yard mowed and weed eated. I had a bird bath that I wanted Cary to move for me. Got that done. It weighs a ton. I also chopped a quart bag of green and red bell peppers for the freezer. Did a bit or reorganizing in the pantry room, after yesterdays' shopping trip. Cary fertilized the peppers, tomatoes, cukes, and squash again. It's all still looking pretty good in spite of all our mistakes this year. I did more laundry, and did a bit of house cleaning, after finishing straightening up the laundry room.

I'm tired. Think we'll just have fried egg, ham, and cheese sandwiches with chips for supper.

Tracking has our garden tiller arriving, Tuesday!

I do great on the the fillings....no problem with fillings but the crusts look like a little kid did them ..patched and lumpy...they are tender but they always rip and tear.. .and look ugly
DH says they taste great and messy doesn't affect the taste ...lol
Do you let the dough rest in the fridge for a little bit before rolling and roll it out between to pieces of wax paper?

Another option is to do a crumb topping and after it cools dust with powdered sugar. They are easy: sugar, brown sugar, butter, a spoon full of flour and a little cinnamon. Mix well and sprinkle over top.

It actually my grandmother's pie crust recipe...I watched Mom roll it out many times. ..yes it goes in the fridge. ..I have made it grandmother's way with lard and mom's way with Crisco. ..it is a sfuper tender crust ....but if I look at it will just tear. ..it just looks ugly. I guess the word is patched
