I love most beans, DH has a few favorites. I have canned beans and dried beans stored. DH definitely doesn't like lentils, black beans, chick peas and black eyed peas. Actually I can't think of any that I don't like, dried that is.

Purple hull peas that people around here can eat at just about meal I don't particularly care for, if there was nothing else to eat I would eat them. It may be the way they cook them. I like beans very soft, comes from living in New Orleans so long.

I miss a lot of things about New Orleans, but living there is not one of them.

Purple hull peas are our favorite. I buy them by the cases now that we no longer grow our own. I have more of them stored than any other, except maybe, pintos.

I always have at least a dozen cans of beans around for making quick chili. Just dump it all in the pot with lots of seasoning and let it simmer a bit. Easy as can be and usually makes me two weeks worth of lunch portions for the freezer.
A dozen cans, I buy them by the case and stack them up, normal amount is about 6 cases of many kinds, although purple hulls is not one of them.

Yep. Cases and flats of a variety of peas and beans. Here's my list......green beans, purple hull peas, black-eyed peas, sweet peas, red beans, lima beans, butter beans, field peas, pinto beans, and baked beans. That covers everything we like.

Good list, I have all of those except purple hulls, which I've actually never seen canned. I also have lentils, black beans and garbonzo (chick) peas. In addition to the canned I also have them in the dried form too. It would be a long long time before we'd run out of beans. Of course I have rice to go along with them and yeast flakes (b vitamins) to add to them.

Bush's makes the canned purple hull peas. We buy them by the flats at Walmart. I have never seen any other brand. They aren't as good as my home grown and canned, but they're still good.

Where has the week gone? Its already Saturday again.

I'm still pulling beans and rice out of my freezers. The first batch all got room temperature in a couple of days and I've put the beans in pint jars. Have a case of red beans vacuum sealed and ready to go to the she shed. Still working on the rice, I'm using quart jars for that, mostly.

Our little goat that routinely goes missing for a couple of days is out with the other goats this morning. I wish he wasn't such a loner, he just will not hang out with any of the other goats, even the ones that are his age.

Still haven't made it to walmart, we are now out of sliced bread, but have plenty of tortillas. Getting the other things on my list is not an emergency, we can do without those things for awhile.

We both have doctors appointments at the VA this week, unfortunately not on the same day. I tried to change mine, but it didn't work out. Its more than a 100 mile round trip. Nothing serious, just check ups.

I am starting to think I will not get those three cases of 6 oz cans of pineapple juice. The shipment is still delayed. Walmart will do this when something goes up in price. Its missing and they cannot replace it. The clearance price was 10 and change and it went up to 32 and change. Oh well.

We're sweltering again here, today. 101 with 114 heat index. Forecast high of 104 with heat index of 116. It's so dry our grass crunches. No rain in sight.

My Sam's order just arrived. I'm now set on vitamins and supplements for over a year.

My next dental appointment is Tuesday, and Cary has a doctor's appointment on Thursday in big town. His is just for a check up. I have 3 fillings to get done. Got my Valium ready, LOL!

Got a load of laundry hanging on the line to dry. The volunteer garden got watered good with the run off. It's doing amazingly well. I think there must be something in the water that's acting as a fertilizer!

We picked up my boots I ordered a month ago. The price was up about $40. They are expensive, but I can be on my feet all day without being in pain. I only buy 1 pair a year usually. I have 2 pair that are very worn, one that I still wear to town, one pair that are my good town boots, and the pair just bought. I had them order me new insoles for the ones I work in daily. That will get more time on them.

We woke up to loud thunder just after 4 this morning. I had such high hopes for rain, but not a drop fell on us. It stayed just to our north. I guess I will be watering the gardens later. I dug another row of potatoes last night. I am not sure I got back any more than I planted. It is getting serious how bad we need rain.

Just piddling with house chores and small outside list. Trying to get some help. Most help I usually have is my 8 yr old grandson. He's my farm boy lol.
Temps are really nice and mild today. We are blessed with good gardens this year.
Big cat stayed in pen. Kittens got out. So back in cabin. Have to wait a bit longer.
4-H meet tomorrow at the lake, discuss the online registration.
Judy and Sherre, why won't/can't the docs do a virtual appointment if it's just a check up?
It's a lot of driving.
They were doing that to hubs. In fact we used to sit in the doc offices listening to the receptionist work the phone. Going down the list calling everyone for follow ups and check ups. Heard her giving them the spiel that reminded me of my days as a phone sales person.
I know you probably have to go. Just feel for you with high gas and travel.

Cary has to have blood work done every 4 months, so no phone visit. We have other shopping to do while in big town, so it won't be a wasted trip.

We did have phone appointments when covid first got started. But no more. Its the VA.

DH has to have blood work done for his blood thinner and he's had an ear infection that needs to be checked.

I have a UTI and they won't prescribe with out a urine sample. Plus its a standing three month appt so I can get my pain meds refilled every month, thank you obunghole. I'm service connected and need them for my back injury that gives me grief.

Gosh! We just got a lightening storm with lots and lots of rain. Thank God for the rain! Severe thunderstorms are still all around us, and our power is blinking. I think the worst is over for us, but we're still under a severe thunderstorm watch, until 10 pm. It's been raining hard for over an hour, and it's still raining hard. This is totally unexpected. Crazy weather for sure. I sure hope it cools things down.

You can request a phone visit. Just tell them it's difficult to travel that far. Most of my DH's Dr's visits are video appointments. You can also request community care civilian side locally if you have to travel over (I think) 20 miles one way.

as I said we both have to do labs and I'm not interested in a doctor out side the va

I think Barry and Southern Breeze (Sherree) need to share their red beans and rice recipes; don't you all think so too? :)

Sherree, you are so lucky to have so many choices on beans/peas - we have green beans, wax beans, chili beans, and great northern at our stores; nothing like purple hulls, etc... Okay, we do have black eyed peas, I guess that counts

I just want to thank everyone for your participation on this thread; for your helpfulness, and for your positive attitudes - you all make this my favorite thread on the forum - it's right up there above 'Member Stories' on my list. Y'all rock!!

Renee - I agree. While many of the other threads help me stay informed, in many ways - there's nothing I can do about it. However, this thread helps me truly prep. And 'member stories' is my vice! I'm not getting much done this weekend, and it's all Kathy's fault!!

I should probably go ahead and can up all my dry beans now so that when I need them, they are pre-cooked.

I am actually nervous about pulling the rice out of my freezer right now because of the humidity. I know to not open the bags until they come to room temp, but IIRC the bags are a tarpaulin cloth, and I worry about condensation seeping in.

I blanched and peeled my tomatoes tonight. Ketchup to be made tomorrow. Instead of dumping the ketchup I made with too much cinnamon last year, I think I will put it in this years, omit any new, and process it all together. I hope that works.

One of the bags of rice I pulled out of one of the freezer was 10#s. After a couple of days part of it still felt cold, so I dumped part of it in a big bowl and waited a day and then jared them up, and then the remainder of the bag. I ran my clean hands through it and it felt just fine, no cool spots.

I've had a pile of stuff in my kitchen that has been building and building. I've started going through it and putting things in jars. I found 9# of barley that I bought a couple of months or so ago and get it in jars and vacuum sealed. I did one pint jar, but the rest is going in the she shed, the pint jar is going in the china cabinet so that I can see it. I'm now working on my third case of quarts, rice, barley and a few other things. The first two cases have gone in the she shed which has an air conditioner.

Besides what I already have, I've found several boxes of velvetta cheese sauce, I do not need to buy any more.

One thing I've found are all the tortilla bags that I've kept. They have a zipper and I figured they would work if I can't get zip locs.

I just took the lid off of a bucket that is half full of lima beans. They might be two years old, but I'm going to put them in jars anyway. And I found almost a whole case of 1/2 gallon jars.

Obviously this pile has been there for awhile. It will be a real accomplishment for me to get that pile taken care of. My new system of working on the stuff in the front room, where I can go, do a few things, rest, and then do more. I seem to have an energy spurt in the evenings. I'm so happy about this that it brings tears to my eyes, that I'm actually getting things done.

I also want to get started on the linens that are on the shelves in the second bathroom. And get them packed away properly. I use clear trash bags and suck the air out, things store like that for a long time. These shelves will be used for my stash of things that I would put in cabinets in the bathroom. An example are my four large bottles of milk of magnesia, my four or so bottles of calamine. Many bottles of hydrogen peroxide, things like this. Finally get it all in one place. Can't let strangers go in the bathroom, they will think they are in a drug store.
