I'm doing what amounts to a total house purge and re-arrange. I have to get down on my hands and knees to get in my lower kitchen cabinets and I can never remember what's in them. So I wrote the contents on an index card and taped it to the inside of the door. We'll see how long it takes for dh to remove them :) I've got almost half the kitchen done, and I've found a few interesting things, some sweetened condensed milk from 2006, and a jar of jelly that had no date on it but had turned to syrup. The chickens liked that. I put the milk straight in the outside trash. Hopefully the bears won't think that's a challenge to to get the can open and strew trash all over the yard.

Good going, Marseydoats! It's tedious work, but highly worth it in the end. I'm working on my upstairs closets, one at a time. The organization isn't working, so I'm going to re-do at least two of them. They are high and narrow, afterthoughts by the designer, I think. The last owner used Sauder wardrobes, but I think they take up too much space.

I have been looking for more 4-cheese Rice-a-Roni. Walmart was out. Publix wanted $1.25 a box. I was at Winn Dixie today and hit the jackpot. They were 2/$1 and they had lots of the 4-cheese. I bought 10, as I do have a "no more space" problem, but I was quite pleased with the price.

Next door at Dollar Tree they finally had in the 1 lb bags of the Pink Himalayan salt for $1. I got 3--again, very little space left.

Heat index outside right now is 106. Nothing is moving very fast, today, including us.

I've been rearranging things in the pantry room, and moving some food cases out of our bedroom into the pantry room. I needed to make more room for more cases of canned meat and the B&M bread. I've cleared out enough space to make one stack for meat, and one for the bread in the floor against a narrow wall.

I'm going to start cleaning and ridding myself of some old clothes in the laundry room next. It's been awhile, since I've gone through some of these old clothes. Mostly old hunting clothes and coats that we've accumulated over time. I can use the extra space for more food storage.

Since I started taking DE and ACV again earlier in the week I'm feeling a bit more energy. There are a couple of areas I am determined to do today. One is to clean off the top of the freezer in the pantry room and the other is to clean off part of the counter in my kitchen that just seems to stay piled up.

We defrosted our large up right freezer the other day which left extra room because I took all the frozen vegetables out of it and put them in the new 7.0 cf freezer we got last week. I intend to dehydrate at least half of them. I've got four cases of canning jars coming from walmart. We'll see if they get here with none unbroken. DH cleaned out the 5.0 ct freezer he has in his processing shed, all of that went into the newest one. For awhile he let me put frozen stuff from commodities in there because I had no more room anywhere else. One thing we cleaned out was the breaded chicken and fish packages that we got from commodities and put it aside for the dog. She likes it but we do not.

I have a bed frame for the cabin/cottage large bedroom. We burned the mattress and box springs because they were probably 40 years old, they must have been filled with dust mites because they were so heavy we had a hard time moving them. At the time we burned it I was seeing mattresses for $50 on FB market place, but no more they've just about trippled in price. I should have gotten one then. I don't want to spend upwards of $200 for the cabin. I'm thinking that if DH builds a solid base for the bed frame, there are slats for it, that I can use the two feather bed type mattress pads plus the 3" foam mattress pad that I have instead of buying a mattress. DH still has much to do in that bedroom to set it up right now.

so many things to do and not much energy to get it all done.

I do like the idea of the contents of cabinets to be on a card on the inside of the door. Actually that's a really good idea, for me anyway. I also need to do that for the freezers.

DH packaged up another 20# plus pounds of ground pork today. I bought some silicone woopie pans and he's been putting the ground pork with sausage seasoning in those pans, I have three of those pans which makes 18 patties at a time. I think he's done about 4 rounds of the patties. The thing I like about the wild pork is that those pigs have had virtually no food that is gmo, except for a tiny amount of corn he put in the pig trap. My thinking is its truly a healthy meat.

We have three caged 300-gallon water tanks for water catchment storage that we use for plants. Each is on a homemade stand tall enough so a 5-gallon bucket will fit under the spigot.
Well each was full of water because we have finally been getting some rain. We just got another 2" rain and it softened the ground enough so one tank tipped to a severe angle. I had used wood posts set into the ground with a heavy wood pallet on top. The wood posts sank into the ground on one side causing the tank to really lean. I used a couple of hydraulic jacks and some lumber to straighten the tank and prop it up again. No harm done at all. I will do a better job when things dry out. Just another day here.

Marseydoats,

Chickens like old milk - even after it has separated into curds and whey.

I never throw old milk away. I give it to my gals all the time.

They like old yogurt and sour cream too.

I learned this from an older dairy farmer in rural west Tennessee. She has raised her pigs on almost nothing but apples and milk, and gives her chickens leftover milk every day as well. Her farm animals are extremely healthy, and her chicken’s eggs are the best I have ever eaten. They have strong shells on them, too.

So do dogs and cats. I never throw anything out that I can use to feed them. I had a whole flat of canned milk that went bad. I used it to pour over our cat's dry food every morning while it lasted. I used less dry food that way.

Marseydoats I put a rectangular basket on my bottom shelf. I can pull it out to get items. I no longer keep things at very back of lower cainets as they as too difficult to access since my knees aren't what they used to be.

I decluttered 5 years ago room by room.
Every cabinet closet shelf and drawer. Touched every item and cleared ALOT. Still do annual purges. So glad I did.
Much less inventory to manage !

if you follow the Moonshiners reality show - the old guys on the program had to find a home for a trailer load of expired mayonnaise - empty the quart jars to re-use for their booze >>> took a case of mayo out to a pig farmer friend for experimenting - I knew the pigs would eat it but figured some feed solid mix would be needed - took the boar 10 seconds to start one hell of a messy feed frenzy ...

I did that about 4 years ago and need to do it again. I only have one bottom cabinet, I use to store refrigerator containers in it but cleaned that out thinking I was going to get a dishwasher, which never happened, if I had pushed it (which is something I rarely do) DH would have put it in, but I let it go. I've not been really sorry about it except when it comes to washing a big load of canning jars. But I don't have to do that very often. I do have boxes and cases that do need to be washed though.

This was from 2006, and I was worried that it might explode if I tried to open it. And I didn't want to take a chance on killing my chickens because I don't know if I can get anymore. :)

Start the new job this week. Gotta admit I did a little crying on the way home after my last day in the ER - I will miss those girls so much! Still working on the garden and trying to help DH do some cleaning of the storage areas.

I did a lot of weeding this morning. That's where I do my best praying. I've decided that fear is the biggest enemy. We (Christians) know how important it is to try to follow the commandments - but the Bible has "fear not", "be not afraid", or the like at least 365 times in it. That's a command, too. So I'm trying really hard to not be afraid - of the new job, of being forced to take the vax, and of many many other things.

The main two things I wanted to accomplished yesterday, clean off the freezer in the pantry room, got that done and opened the freezer, its full and closed it back up. Last year I started organizing it, I've put like things in canvas bags (I saw that on a you tube video).

This freezer has two or three years worth of ground venison, probably some steaks. At least the steaks have been tenderized. The tenderizer we have just about does nothing, so we just stopped trying. The meat was so tough I could not chew it and that before my teeth became so sensitive. There is a big bag of frozen vegetables that I am going to dehydrate. so today I'm going to get the dehydrated cleaned up (it gets grimy where its kept, ugh) and start dehydrating.

The kitchen counter is also cleaned off. Now to get that dehydrator going and work on some other areas in the kitchen.

Still taking the DE and still on my diet. The diet is getting easier, I stopped all sweets and late night stacking, and its not quite so hard as it was the first couple of days. I'm easing into intermittent fasting, but I'm eating twice a day instead of once. Baby steps. Big thing is I'm not really hungry.

Hey y'all :)

I managed to get a few chores done yesterday, but mostly just enjoyed not having to be anywhere or do anything in particular. I wonder how long that feeling will last when I retire

I ran to town and picked up the boys; then took them to the Evil Empire to pick up school supplies. Lord have mercy! Hubby has today off work - I'm going to ask him to run in to town and fill any empty fuel containers, and to unhook my hose from the power washer - I've already got a scraped knuckle from trying to do so this morning and ended up watering the porch plants with a pitcher of water instead. Those are the only things I plan to ask of him, so he surely can't complain too much....

I checked the flower bed I planted 3 - 16' long rows of coneflower seed in - lots of grass, some wild morning glory and a few other weeds, but no coneflower sprouts. I did plant quite a few coneflower seeds in trays on the porch, several of those have come up and some have their second set of leaves already. I'll give the ones in the flower bed a bit longer to see if they are going to do anything - since it's too darn wet to till it anyway.

The garden is still soggy - there are new, 3" deep deer tracks going down the pole bean row, so I won't be getting in there to weed or harvest - only thing ready right now are cherry tomatoes and peppers anyway. The neighbor with the market garden if offering green beans and tomatoes by the bushel and half bushel; I've got several cases of green beans left so will just buy enough to have fresh ones on the table until mine are producing better. I might get a half bushel of tomatoes to make salsa with though...

Heard the crows raising Cain a bit ago - they are up in the top of the pines on our west property line but keep moving south down the line of pines. Not sure what they are harassing, but whatever it is, they don't like it! I'm grateful for my crow early warning system - guess I need to go to the thrift store and buy them some more bling

Daughter has been crazy busy - the woman who had been living in her rental house and was supposedly going to buy it called her on Thursday and told her she had moved out. Daughter went over to check and the place was a disaster, still lots of furniture and other stuff in the house and garage, so she hauled everything out and had a garage sale while cleaning it up so she could see what she would need to do to get the house in shape to sell it. One more thing on her already full plate.

I'm going to try to get a nap in - have to go sit on metal bleachers in the hot sun to watch the 10 year old grandson practice his football lineman skills this evening - I guess I'm going to have to learn football all over again  My school was too small to field a football team, but daughter went to a larger high school so I got a crash course then as she was a cheerleader, and another short refresher course when step-granddaughter cheered. I've managed to forget everything I knew since then, however...

And speaking of a nap, if I'm going to get one, I'd better go fight for my spot on the couch - or evict a grandson out of my recliner

Take care all; have a wonderful day!

Just a little note.

You know that word "assume"? I realized for years I assumed I knew what the family would want to eat in an emergency. Also realized preps were less than an afterthought to the rest of the family.... just Mom doing her thing. Looking at the beans and rice I came to the conclusion, "Yeah, they're not going to want to eat that, at least not as a steady diet.". I also didn't take into account people's tastes change over time.

So I asked for lists of shelf safe foods they would eat. Waiting on the lists now.

I found a bucket of green beans in the kitchen this morning when I went to make coffee from DH’s uncle. I got those snapped, washed and canned, 7 quarts to add to the pantry. Our beans haven’t started blooming yet, hopefully they will soon. DH thinks the corn will start coming in later this week. I’m kind of dreading it, corn has never been my favorite thing to work up and my energy level has been really low and pain level up but I still hope it does well.

Babysitting duties will resume later this week, DH and I will have all 3 until school starts for the kids then it will just be the 2 yr. old. Whew, I feel old today!

4H meeting yesterday. One boy will do his comic book, other will make keto brownies. This is for September fair.
Dh mowing. Chores done, house clean, laundry.
Boys friend to come over for few hours today then take them all to VBS. I will be helping.
There is so much produce coming in. Daughter is canning green beans.
She and I committed to eating straight out the pantry for a month. No purchases except things we can't produce because preps need to be rotated.
SIL is still toughing it out at new job. Hard worker. Hopefully they will agree to start him on forklift Tonight

We went to pick up the grandboy. Stopped at the store on the way. Lots of low inventory and holes. The clerk said some was because of inventory, but other was because of covid. She said just random stuff they can't get because of covid. Or at least that is the word they are getting. Of course, it is Monday too. But Mondays have not looked this bad in a long time.

I have friends with Covid. One friends adult son is in ICU. He has been sick for over a year and the drs have not entirely figured it out. But they still sent him home with just directions to take tylenol. Nothing else. His mom was given antibiotics and prednisone. She is doing well. Her husband is now on oxygen at home because there is no hospital beds. He was also given the same instructions as the son. Why, oh why are the drs not being proactive? We bought a tube of horse paste today. So now we have 2 types of ivemectin.

I have 3 frames of honey to spin. I may get one or 2 more. But that will be it for the year I think.

Well “later in the week” for the corn came today LOL. I was enjoying my morning coffee when DH came in with corn that he had pulled and shucked. So we sat down and started getting the silk off, not what I was planning at all today. 112 ears total, it’s all cut off whole kernel and it’s waiting on me to get it bagged up for the freezer. DH had to leave and run errands and I’m resting a bit before tackling the job. I’m glad that was all that was ready for today as I don’t think I could have done much more.

I put in a Walmart order last night as I wanted to get a couple of jars of Better Than Bouillon beef flavor for some meat canning I’m planning and although it let me put 2 jars in the cart, when I was ready to check out it would only let me get 1 jar. Also in the order was 2 boxes of Lipton Beefy Onion soup mix, had an email this morning that it had already shipped, nothing else, a whole $3.04 from a $44.** order. Walmart seems insane any more!

Break time is about over!

editing to add: I had 6 quarts (for when the whole family is here) and 14 pints of whole kernel corn.

Dh & I have been telling everybody we know that we're in the market for a puppy or a new farm dog, for the past 2 mos. Inlaws had a cute litter of mixed pups that would have made great farm dogs. They put them on fakebook and gave all of them away in an hour and never even offered us one. And they wonder why I hate all of them.

Just thinking out loud: I'm trying to work through a morale decision.

I sold my upright piano (used) when I moved to Iowa because it cost 2X to move it than I paid for it. I'm thinking about either getting a new (but inexpensive) portable electronic keyboard or a used guitar. The guitar works when there's no power but I like playing the piano a lot better. Cost really isn't that much of a factor. A used guitar is about the same as a new, low-level basic keyboard.

I'm not totally without music during a power outage. I did buy a soprano and an alto recorder (both fit in a tote bag!)

Does anyone have plans to hook up their electronic piano to a battery if power is lost? Or am I just really weird?

Or ignore if this is too far out there. I'm just trying to think of morale things for the next round of lock downs (which I hope doesn't happen).

We also pulled corn, picked tomatoes and okra, and I cut sunflowers which started blooming over the weekend. I have flowers everywhere plus keep a 5 gal bucket full of water and flowers for anyone who passes by and wants flowers. By 10A it started to rain and is still raining. I enjoyed a low key day! On the other hand I feel like we have passed some unseen line and have entered a new place. It seems dark to me. So like Meemur I rechecked my stash of things I can do during this next lock down.

I have topped off first aid preps and meds and have reorganized as most of you. I am sort of holding my breath remembering the video of Bill and Melinda Gates promising us that the second pandemic will for sure get our attention. But then I am reminded that God has this and NONE of it is taking Him by surprise. He is indeed my Rock and my Salvation!

I don't know if you have room for another full sized piano, but our habitat for humanity store usually has at least 2 nice ones for sale, and they deliver. I realize you may not have those stores where you live.

It's supposed to be 100 plus degrees the rest of the week, so I'll just be going out every hour to cool the livestock off with the hose and top off water tanks. I've already finished all my barn chores, it was brutal outside before 8 am. Got a load of clothes in the washer and will hang them inside as soon as they finish, with the humidity it would take them 2 days to dry outside. Once I cool off I need to make myself eat some breakfast.
I guess I need to get back on the kitchen cabinets and finish them, but I just can't get motivated. Too much stress worrying about another lockdown. I did get a whole load of library books the first of the week, so many hardbacks I had to make 2 trips to the car. So at least I have something to read for awhile.
I ordered some livestock vitamins 2 weeks ago and they still haven't gotten here.

have you checked the FB MarketPlace or CraigsList for free pianos & organs? >>> I see a ton - just need to move it

Everything and everyone here is moving slowly, because of the heat. 106 heat index, again, yesterday. The counties near ours hit 112, yesterday. Could get as high as 120 over the next 2-3 days. Anything outdoors is being done at daylight or soon after. We're also beginning to enter our dry months. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that "burn ban" notices are issued in the near future, especially with this heat.

Tomatoes are still doing great. I've not gathered enough to start canning, yet, but we are enjoying getting enough to slice up with our meals each night, plus adding them to salads and sandwiches.

We spent the afternoon with our youngest DS, yesterday. He's still trying to decide if he wants to move to Huntsville, AL, stay in the Tupelo area, or move back to Texas, but a different part of the state. He's weighing all options good and bad for each.

We're still ordering online from Sam's, Walmart, and Chewy. Adding more to my stock. Like others, I think we'll have another lockdown, even though our Gov. has said that it won't happen again here. Put enough money under his nose, and he's been known to change his mind.

Problem. I've been waiting on and tracking my order for the B&M Brown bread. It still hasn't come, even though according to our tracking, it was supposed to be delivered, yesterday. Well, this morning, Cary checked the tracking, again. It said that is was delivered, yesterday. NO, it was not. We waited all day, and nothing came. So, what should I do now? How do I prove that I didn't get my order when they are saying I did? It's past time for FedEx to run at my house, today, and still nothing.

Sometimes left at post office or delivered to wrong address. They are supposed to have a picture of the house they left it at. Could still be on truck too. Can you call and let them know not received?
