It has been so hot and humid here that I can barely stay outside to take care of the animals. And we have had so much rain there is water standing in the yard. Never happened in the summer before.
Best laid plans and all that... I was going to do a Lowe's pick up tomorrow and get a bunch of rock and grass seed, and they no longer allow you to do that with bulk items unless you're a contractor. You used to be able to pick a time and order what you wanted, you can't do that anymore either. You have to order and wait for them to text you, and pick it up in a window that they specify. Won't work for me.
So I made myself go down to the sand bar this morning and I shoveled 100 pounds of sand. It really feels like it's a lot, but then I get it up the hill and dump it in a hole, and it's like I didn't even bother. I've got to get this water situation under control before the winter rains hit. I also got 2 big rocks, a log for the wood stove, and picked up some trash while I was down at the creek.
Tomorrow's my normal shopping day and I've got a large list. I hate to go to town...

Still a heat index of triple digits, here, every single day. It's about to wear us down trying to keep everything watered. Still no rain. I think we may have a chance of getting some Friday and Saturday, but that's not a guarantee.

Those fresh green beans were so good last night. I still have home canned ones from our garden a few years back, but these fresh ones were great. Meatloaf turned out good, too. It wants to always fall apart with me when I take it out of the loaf pan, but not this time. I don't go by a recipe, and that's probably the problem. It's back to sandwiches, tonight, though. Ham, Swiss, lettuce, tomatoes from the garden, onion slices, on Jewish rye. Think I'll cook some tater tots to go with them, or chips.

Cary's doctor's appointment is really early tomorrow morning, so I won't be here till later in the afternoon. We have much shopping to do after the two doctor's appointments. One of his appointments is only for a blood draw. There won't be any waiting to get that one done. I've got my Sam's list all made out. I hate to shop for clothes, but it's something I've got to get done. If I wasn't so hard to fit, it wouldn't be such a big deal. Cary is taking a book to read, cause it might take awhile. He's learned to always go prepared, LOL.

DH went to town to get feed. He said he is getting extra for the coming hunting season, its over ten dollars for 50#s of corn. The walmart we went to yesterday is in a different town and they were out of the tampico mango drink he likes, so he is going to check the wm in this town today. He also bought a game camera to put where the goats have been stolen, but it didn't work so he is taking it back. The inside of the box said not to take it back to the retailer but to send it to them and I told him that BS and he agreed. He wants another camera now not weeks from now or ever.

I've got to put away the commodities we got yesterday. No fresh meat but we did get two cans of chicken and two cans of salmen. That's always a good thing. I need to steam some eggs to make chicken salad, and I guess I could make salmen salad too.

My leg is okay today, the pain is managable, but I'm still snake bit about falling. Life goes on.

Speaking of making salads. I make ham salad, chicken salad, and tuna salad, but have no idea how to make egg salad. I've seen egg salad mentioned in another thread. Cary likes to boil eggs, peel and slice them, and just put them on bread with a bit of mayo. I think I'd like to try egg salad, though. How do ya'll make yours?

I add mayo, diced onions, a bit of garlic salt, and pepper to mine.

I think bacon bits would be good, too. I was already thinking of adding chopped onions and pepper.

The closest I've come to having egg salad sandwiches is a scrambled egg with mayo sandwich. Just scramble an egg, slather mayo on the bread, and add the egg with a bit of salt and pepper.

Mustard with eggs? I have never had egg salad before, but mustard?

boil and peel eggs - then I finely chop up a celery stalk or two if I have them (if not celery salt works), a large “dollop” of dukes mayo, a small squirt of mustard, some salt and pepper and that’s it - if I don’t have celery, I have also added a chopped pickle or two for some added crunch.

edited - sometimes I add a small amount of garlic powder as well.

Hubby had to pick up a prescription so I ran with him and killed time at the dollar general while he got his medicine.

I went to the dollar section and picked up three otc “cold medicines” and two things of the generic cough drops. When I got to the register, the cough drops rang up at fifty cents each Instead of one dollar. I went back and got six more bags (still lots left on the shelf). With what I have already put back, we will be good to go for cough drops (Hubby uses A LOT when sick).

side note - the Dollar general had a cash only sign on the door - MANY people walking away from it.

We then went to a thrift store where I scored a daily devotional to give away to a nursing home resident “pen pal” I just “adopted”. The devotional is new, and she requested religious reading so think it will work perfectly. I also got a coffee pot for $4.98. We have one like it - sells for $60 on Amazon. Hubby found a closet shelving bundle for $9. He will be able to use it in the garage.

I love thrifting at times.

Slow and steady -

I add fine chopped onion , green pepper and homemade seasoned Italian bread crumbs to my meat loaf ...spice to taste then add slightly beaten egg/eggs....so it holds together well.. .depends on the amount of meat.... then mix well in bowl with my hands..form loaf in bowl and add a little water over the top and smooth with hands..put in roasting pan with lid... pour tomato soup/tomato sauce over it ..and water around the loaf ...cover for first half of cooking time...then uncover and baste with pan dripping makes a great tomato coating and it doesn't crumble when cutting but stays tender and moist.

For 2lbs of ground beef, I add 2 eggs, 1/3 cup of A-1 steak sauce, maybe, 1/3 cup of ketsup ( I just give the bottle a good squirt), 1 cup of bread crumbs, a bit of black pepper, and lots of dehydrated onions. Mix it all up with my hands, and place it all in a greased loaf pan. Pack it in good, and bake at 350 for about an hour. If I have thawed bacon, I lay strips of bacon all over the top, before it goes in the oven. We don't like it too "tomatoey". I don't know why it sometimes comes out nice and firm, and sometimes it falls apart. It might be the amount of fat in the meat. Like I said, I don't use a book recipe, just the way I've always made it.

Most people I know put in mustard; makes it a bit tangy. My mom instead put in curry powder. I think it came from her English grandma.

I'm just not a fan of mustard in or with anything. Something about mixing mustand and pickles with eggs doesn't set well with me for some reason. I think I'll just keep doing it the way we've always done it. Hard boiled eggs peeled and sliced, or scrambled, on bread slathered in mayo with a bit of salt and pepper.

It sounds like everyone is making deviled eggs, LOL! I don't use mustard or pickles in those, either, but a lot of ladies do.

Just found out my youngest (21) tested positive this afternoon for Covid. I think he might have food poisoning on top of it.
I spent a lot of time with him on Monday so would appreciate positive vibes I don’t get it and bring it to my hubby (again). Also praying my oldest son and his fiancé don’t get it (we were all together Monday).

Prayers would be appreciated please.

Been buying #10 cans of Augason farms peanut butter powder off of Amazon and just bought a few more. Only $15 a can and that is 49% off the list price of $29.99 so not a bad deal. With everything getting more expensive and as expensive as protein is having peanut butter powder is a long lasting additional source of protein and it's actually pretty cheap. Haven't tried any yet as I don't want to break the seal on a can but the reviews seem good.

Says shelf life is only 5 years but those expiration dates seem to be pretty conservative.

Well, for us if I remember correctly both deviled eggs and egg salad had the same ingredients. You have to make them the way you love them. Now I want some eggs but darn, I'm very sensitive to them!

I don’t make egg salad - only tuna-egg salad. I put chopped grapes, applesauce, chopped onion, bell pepper and celery into mine. Plus some Hellmann’s mayonnaise and garlic salt.

That combination is great.

I am in line for the mobile food pantry as I write this.

I got here before 6 am (for a food distribution event that does not begin until 9 am). There were about 30 cars already in line. I have no idea what time the first car arrived. It is now 6:49 am, and the line is as far back as I can see - and I can see at least 12 to 15 cars behind me. So that is at least 40 to 45 cars already in line, and it is not even 7 am yet.

This is one of the Mid South Food Bank’s SMALLER distributions.

I have seen people show up as early as 3 am for the two larger events that I sometimes attend, but never this “little neighborhood” event.

Prices are getting so high at the grocery store - every week, more and more people are turning to these mobile food pantries to make it.

People are hurting all over.

Well, after not sleeping well at all last night, and getting up really early this morning to go for Cary's doctor appointment, the office just called, and cancelled his appointment! Doctor called in sick this morning, so they had to reschedule. Probably has covid. It going like wildfire here, again. Over 1000 cases/day, and it's been like this for awhile now in our state.

Anyway, he still has to go for a blood draw at his PC office. Then, it's on to Sam's and shopping for clothes. We just don't have to leave as early. I think I'll get myself another cup of coffee.

Today will be busy here on our farm. I have beans to pick and can, peaches to can, tomatoes to pick, and DH has a Dr's appointment this afternoon. I just feel incredibly blessed by the bounty that God has blessed us with this summer!

Barry, I hear you on the grocery prices! It's insane! I do all my grocery shopping online for curbside pick up. I always get more than I have ordered, I can go through my order when I see the total and take items out, so I don't spend as much as I would if I shopped in person. I also probably look crazy walking through the store with my mouth hanging open while looking at prices, and DH can't do more than 5 or 10 minutes in a store anymore. It would probably take me an hour to shop in person, since we have a big family and still have Littles at home.

Friendly reminder for all - stay current on your vitamins and supplements. I had gotten a bit “slack” in taking them over the summer.
I am back to it faithfully and doing all I can to keep my immune system as healthy as I can.
I don't take all of my vitamins all the time and some times I get slack and take nothing. I've added some back to help with the sciatica and the uti, I don't think its completely cleared up. I go for another test on the 5th. But I am keeping up with my one years supply.

We just got home, and put away everything we got at Sam's.

Bloodwork was great for Cary. Doctor's office called as soon as we got home to tell us everything looked good. Doctor told him to keep up the good work.

I didn't find anything I liked as far as dress clothing goes. Everything just looked trashy. I'm short, and have to have petite sizes, and that limits me even further as to finding something. I left frustrated and disgusted. Women's style of clothing is way lacking these days. I don't want to look like a teenage street walker, but neither do I want to look like an old prudish grandma, either. There doesn't seen to be anything inbetween.

I guess I'll have to dig out my dress clothes from my closet, and try them on to see if there is a chance I can still fit comfortably in them. I know I've gained a few pounds, since I last wore some of them. Nothing wrong with them other than they might be too small now. Some, I've only worn once, and are still appropriate for my age and style. I had planned to give them to charity thinking I wouldn't be able to wear them any longer. We'll see.

My aunt that broke her hip is still going downhill, along with her husband. Mom has another older sister that has staph in her diabetic leg that is getting worse, and she's not doing well at all. Mom's baby sister's husband suffered a stroke, and is in bad shape. I don't think any of them are going to be with us much longer. Ages are 86-93. Thus the need to buy appropriate clothing soon.

Some years back I read that having a hip replacement after 70 can lead to a mental decline. It happened to both my mother and her husband. Her husband was pretty much in lala land when he came home from rehab. The social worker at the hospital when my mother had hers told me I was responsible for my mother. I told her no I am not. She really tried to convince me of it. My mother and I did not have a good relationship.

Sorry about your aunt SB.

My aunt's mind is so bad, now, that if she ever is able to leave the rehab facility, she'll have to go into a long term care home. Her 93 yr. old husband isn't able to care for her at home, and their 3 children all live in other states. He will probably have to go into the home with her. I just found out, today, that there are 3 covid cases at the rehab facility where she's staying! 2 nurses and one patient.
