Don’t give up gardening because of this year, SB…

This is a TERRIBLE year for growing veggies in our neck of the woods.

I remember the summer of 2007 - it was just as hot and dry, from the second week of April right into the fall.

If that had been my first year gardening, I think I would have given up too…

But I had 10 years experience growing by that time, so I knew to just wait till next year…

We have had lots of great growing years since that horrible summer of 2007…

Hang in there.

Maybe you should just pull the plants out of your raised bed right now, put some good soil amenders into the soil (finely chopped fresh - chemically UNTREATED - grass clippings, used coffee grinds, too old powdered milk, epson salts, etc) and then just wait till the end of August, when you can replant the bed with little lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and spinach seedlings from the local gardening store, or plant something like leaf lettuce seeds or turnip green seeds if you miss the opportunity to purchase the little plant starts.

Thanks for the encouragement, Barry. This was the first year in about 5 years that we had attempted to have a sizeable garden again. Total failure, almost. It was a rushed job, and that's probably the reason it failed. Everything is dying no matter what we've done. I do have a good compost bin going, and all the oak leaves will be raked this fall, and dumped into the gardens. I won't even attempt it next year, unless we are able to spend more time getting the soil prepared properly. Hopefully, Cary can get his tiller going, and we can till up the area that is growing our volunteer garden right now. That seems to be a great natural spot for one. I was just sick to see how a rabbit ate all my beautiful cucumber vines!

I got up this morning with my back killing me. I was cleaning the bathtub, yesterday, and I twisted just right, and there she went! Ouch! I can hardly walk this morning it hurts so bad. Sciatic nerve pain is no joke!

Still, I've got my canner going with more ground beef. Nothing to do outside, today. It's going to be too hot anyway. Forecast high of 98 with heat index of 108. I think Cary plans to mow later this afternoon if we don't get a humidity pop up thunder boomer to knock him out.

The electric canner needs replacement gaskets?

…. Sheepishly asking for a friend…

Where did you get them?
SB informed me as to your question, so here is the link:

And you can check for all the parts you might need. We're not hair on fire over this, BUT do think it is a very good thing to have on hand, just in case. And when I checked ....yesterday, they were out. So it looks like it's going to be a check back every few days until they have them in stock.

My brother paid my annual membership fee for the Memphis Runners Track Club, and also paid the $100 fee for me to run their annual 10 race Road Race Series.
We've been getting ads for people to come to the "Muddy Girls" something or other in Memphis. Was wondering if you had entered your girls? Don't have a clue what all that may be, and am a bit fearful about clicking on the ad.

BUT I could just see Henrettia running around the barnyard covered in mud. LOL

Well, it's Wednesday, the day new sales come out at the stores. After perusing the ads, I find nothing that particularly stirs my interest or that I would even consider at the current prices!

Oh well, I guess I can spend the "excess" (LOL!!) money on food for the livestock. Speaking of which, one of my goats.....my billy, apparently succumbed to the heat yesterday. He did have some strange marks on him, which leads me to wonder about several things......but he is now gone. He was not showing signs of any problems in the past week, but there it is.....

Also had one of my rabbits apparently die from the heat also......not really surprised, the heat has been suffocating for me also, and that is WITH the A/C!! From about 3:30 to 6:30 PM, the sun just cooks this RV. It gets up to about 83 or 84 in the afternoons. I am anticipating today will be hellacious, since it is barely cool in here this morning at 4 AM! The heat and humidity combined are KILLER!! Dan Dan and I will probably break out the pool again today and soak and play for a bit this afternoon. Don't know how this RV is going to work out.....HOT during summer and FREEZING in winter!! Had NO IDEA it would be SO MUCH FUN!! (NOT)
Oh well, you know what they
say, what doesn't kill you makes you STRONGER!! Just makes it fun along the way, eh??

The baby chicks are now about 2 months old and they are going OUTSIDE TODAY!! They will be fine in the coop and I will get them acclimated to the nesting area. They should have no issues with the heat, as they have been in an UNair-conditioned room, that gets sunlight all day.

My garden is doing "OK," as I have mentioned before, some of my tomatoes are looking GREAT, and some look spindley. Cukes are good, in a partially shaded area of the garden......gets sun about half a day. Still watering about every other day....... peppers have not even come up this year, I only have about 3 total!! Used NEW seed too!! Have MORE to do and trying to get a fall garden ready to plant. I should have an excess of tomatoes and cukes, as well as HOPEFULLY cantaloupes!!
We will see!! NOTHING like what I thought my garden would be like this year!!

I did use mesh bags to protect my grapes and elderberries, we shall see how that works......looks like it is keeping the majority of the bugs off, except for some very talented spiders. They just don't seem to be getting ripe????

If I am reading the 'signs' right, there is a large herd of deer bedding down in my yard each night. I have not mowed the grass at all this summer, and there are smashed down round places everywhere in the tall grass.......they also have eaten all of the sweet potato slips and ALL of my beets from spring.

I do plan on at LEAST one deer this fall!!

Well, no need to go shopping except to get scripts and animal feed....probably will wait until tomorrow, as they are saying a small (10%) of rain today, however, if I filled the back of the truck with grain, it would DEFINITELY cause a down pour!!

Hope all of you are having a wonderful morning and enjoying your caffeine starter like I am mine!! GOD bless you each and everyone!!!

Maranatha!!
So sorry to hear about your billy and as for rabbits, DH raised them fine in Illinois, but around here he had no success. And all one person that has tried to raise rabbits have had no success.

Stay cool, as best you can. I can stand 84 if I've got a fan on me.

Lowe’s, WalMart, Kroger and Home Depot carry fall transplants in my area in late August - the proper time to plant them in my area - until they sell out.

Don’t they do that in your area?

Plant nurseries are not the only stores to sell plant starts, at least not in my area.

No they don't here, I don't know why. Even the big nursery is now closed except two days a week. It's like they stay open and have things just during the first planting season, then close.
I have seeds and have a flat of Brussels coming up.

SB, sciatica is awful. I have this one bout for almost 3 years. Chiro can't fix it due to stenosis in there.
We keep going though don't we. It seems to have eased a bit at times.

I'm having a terrible problem with sciatica too, in my right leg. Next time I go to the VA I will be getting an xray, i guess its best to check out any potential problems that could be underlying. Also will be getting routine blood work and I will try to get my travel pay. They've changed how to get travel pay and want people to do it on line instead at the point of the appointment. I've tried and tried the online thing to no avail.

I always want to say how thankful I am for my health care at the VA. I like my doctor too.

Mine's pretty bad, today. I had back surgery years ago, and about a week after the surgery, I fell, and twisted my back, before it had time to heal. It did damage to the area where I had the surgery, and no surgeon will touch it now. So, now I live with sciatica in my right hip and leg. It doesn't take much twisting to mess it up. I have to be really careful. I need to find an easier way to clean the bathtub, without having to stand on my head, LOL! I'm really short. I'm thinking of buying one of those car washing brushes that have a long handle on them........

Talk to your doctor about a steroid shot. It depends (of course) on what sort of damage you have, but they *can be* amazingly effective. Hubby had severe pain from his sacro-iliac joint. I had been keeping him going for over 2 years with Ouch! Liniment and trigger loint/massage therapy. His doctor finally ordered an MRI.., of thevlower spine, but NOT including the sacroilieac joint! I was SO pissed.

We finally essentially forced the pain management group to do the injection (their notes indicated "his massage therapist insisted!" LOL!), and lo and behold... no more pain! It's been 5 years, and he's just now having some minor twinge in the area, although I'm not feeling any heat in there, indicating inflammation.

Funny thing... about a year after the injection, he told the story to an excellent PA at the orthopedic surgeons office who did his hip replacement. She opened his old MRI, and discovered that one series of frames DID show the SI joint... and she showed his how badly inflamed it was! As she told him, "it shouldn't take your wife insisting you get appropriate medical care, but you're lucky she did!"

I haven't been back to see my back surgeon, since he told me that he couldn't go back in and fix the damage. I would have to get my rheumatologist to make me an appointment to see a pain management specialist. Most of the time, the sciatica goes away after a few days with rest and a lot of pampering the back/leg.

Oh Lord. Was tired after yesterday but took the boys to a pirate party at the library. Went to come home. AC isn't working, Windows won't roll down. Its heat index of near 100. 4.5 miles home thank God. Drove faster than I normally do. Stressful. Must have been well over 100 in the jeep. Ran the fan but didn't help. Got home and Hubs and SIL fixed it, was a bad fuse they swapped it around.
I'm exhausted. We are supposed to go on a hike Sunday but the heat index will be very high and high chance of showers. I think I'm going to postpone it.

Hubby has suffered with his back all summer. A neighbor suggested a “tens unit” for him which he bought off Amazon for under $25. It has given him some relief. He tends to rest it (his back) a day or two and then is right back at it. I can’t get him to truly rest it.
(ie he is picking up a washing machine / dryer by himself to load in his truck). No wonder his back can’t heal.

edited - he thinks it’s scatic (not sure how to spell) but hasn’t gone to the doctor

I have a tens unit, but can't seem to sit still long enough to use it. Too much to do, but I've taken it easy today. It's feeling some what better than it did this morning. I can at least pick my right leg up enough to walk now. I was doing the "shuffle" this morning.

I don't think mine has that, but will have to check to make sure. I haven't used it, yet. Like I said, I can't sit long enough. Cary has used it, though.

Hubby’s has a neck strap which hangs around his neck so he can wear it that way.

He just let me help him unload the washer / dryer off the back of his truck (we had to lift it from the tailgate and carry up a few steps into the house).
Hopefully his back wont be hurting him.

The Schweddy Girls, maybe?

i have heard of a group by that name. I think they are in Germantown, and partner alot with the Breakaway Runnung shoe store for practices, weekly training, and stuff.

All of my girls are runners (escape artists, actually) when they want to be. They like to run out of their yard because thet long ago ago ate every blade of grass inside their enclosed yard.

But none of them have ever shown interest in training.

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
Well, it is time to go out and tend the garden this morning. I tend to dread it because it is so hot although I throughly enjoy the work and spending time with my LORD, doing what He intended for humanity to do.....tending the soil and the Garden of Eden. I feel closest to GOD in my garden, looking at His fingerprints on every leaf, flower and plant. I enjoy looking at the beautiful sky and trees He has blessed this Earth with!! Oh, WHAT will heaven be like if He has created the glory of the Earth and all that is on it?? If this offends you...... don't read it......

Happy caffeine to all of you as you prep for your day!!

4 more pints of ground beef canned up, perfectly, yesterday, and the yard mowed. This morning, we watered everything, but our rain water is about out. I don't like using community water, but we will if we don't get rain soon, at least on the ornamental flowers, bushes, and shrubs. Cary sprayed everything with copper spray, again, and sprinkled sevin dust on some things. He said that the cucumber vines the rabbit ate were putting back out. There may be hope for those, yet. I gathered 3 more large tomatoes. The only way I can keep them from developing little rotten spots on them overnight is to put them in the fridge, once they're washed. I also have more red and green bell peppers to get chopped for the freezer. They are still doing well. I'm having to fight sun scald, though, even with shade cloth on them.

Another hot one, today. Forecast high of 99 with heat index of 108. No rain. I heard on our local weather, yesterday, that this July is on track to be the hottest July in history for this specific area of Mississippi! Our forecast highs over the next week are 100+ each day, and that doesn't include the heat index. Only chance of rain are those humidity showers in the afternoon if you're lucky enough to get one.

My sciatica is much better this morning. I pampered it all day, yesterday, and it paid off. Not well, yet, but much better. I rested it a lot and kept applying BioFreeze to my back and hip all day. The sciatic nerve is so sore in one spot.

Good Morning, All! And a Happy Caffeine to you as well ioujc - my jar of coffee is nearing the bottom, but I'm going to stick with just the one (at least until afternoon )

It's a nice, cool morning here with temps in the low 70's, so I have the door to the side porch open to let in some cool, fresh air - I'll be having to close it soon enough to keep the heat at bay as the sun is starting to clear the tops of the trees in the far east fields. The temp is supposed to be in the low 90's again today, with heat indexes in the high 90's. At least we have the walnut trees close enough to the house that they shade it until the sun is right overhead - no shade on the west at all.

I ended up with what I think was food poisoning after my Auntie's funeral Monday afternoon; I won't go into great and glorious detail, but it was bad enough that I called in to work (they put me on call instead); then I worked Tuesday night with no before-work nap, so I was pretty much useless for anything yesterday other than a planned stop to pick up a few groceries and vitamins on the way home - WM had only one small package of chicken thighs (cat food) - but I did wander through the kids clothing area on my way to pharmacy and found that they were putting summer clothing on clearance in the children's department, so at least I was able to get younger grandson a couple of school worthy outfits so it was worth the stop. I also found where they'd hidden the beet root chews (for blood pressure) - there were none on the shelf, but several in a cardboard kiosk in the middle of an aisle so I picked up 4 bottles as they do seem to help. And then daughter had a client cancel, so I didn't have to take middle grandson to football practice; so all in all it was a fairly restful day.

The dew is heavy again today so I'll have to wait until afternoon to do any weeding - anything else I'm going to get done outside, I need to do by 9:30 or so as I'll need to clean up before the neighbor picks me up to go to the pool at 10. By the time we're done with the pool, lunch - it's Taco Truck day - woo hoo!! - stopping by the store in the pool town to pick up a few of the roasts they have on sale ($3.99/lb), and a possible trip to the local orchard, I'll want to come home and nap  I'll go ahead and chunk the roasts this evening, but won't can them until tomorrow morning as I won't want to heat up the house any worse than it already will be this evening.

Since I'm adding more canned beef to the pantry, I'll pull a jar of home canned beef out to make one of the Knorr's stroganoff packets for supper this evening; and will mix up a batch of scalloped corn to go with them; one pan to eat with the stroganoff, one or two for the freezer, depending on the size of the pan - the recipe makes a large Corning Ware pan full which is handy for family dinners but we'd be eating it every meal for a week or more if we made it in that. The fruit will likely be home canned peaches unless we end up at the local orchard for some reason; in which case it will be fresh peaches. I may scrub some small potatoes and put them in the little crock pot to bake as well. My potatoes in the garden have started flowering, so I won't have to depend on the store for potatoes much longer. The ones that are currently flowering were sprouted ones I'd pulled out of the drawer and decided to plant.

I may have already said this, but the grandsons start back to school on August 18th  I'm so old that we didn't go back to school until the Tuesday after Labor Day!! Of course, schools weren't air conditioned back then - you know, when we walked miles to and from school, and it was uphill both ways  Daughter tells me that they are going to get a long Christmas break to make up for the early start - she'll like that! I need to find school supply lists for the boys and haul them off to the Evil Empire soon; I always add an extra set of school supplies for each of the boys' classrooms - I have family members who are teachers and know how much they spend out of pocket to cover the kids who don't have supplies. We do have a bus that comes 'round with free school supplies - I can't recall if it's the Sallie's or Catholic Charities that does it, but some parents don't take advantage of that; I know I wouldn't have been able to due to my work hours. Two extra sets of supplies aren't going to break me, and they might make a difference to someone. I also usually give the teachers a card with some cash in in, with a note: "For school supplies; wine, chocolate, whatever it takes!" And may the Lord bless them for doing a job that I surely wouln't have the patience for!!

Well, I've been lollygagging on line long enough; better get up and move my clothes to the dryer, make sure all the hummingbird feeders are full enough to last until I get back home, maybe do a little more housework before I need to pull on my swimsuit and get ready to head to town.

You folks all take care out there - stay safe!!

Good Morning! Harvesting a good amount of produce. Melons and cantelopes coming in. Soooo good. I may have eaten enough tomato sandwiches to get me thru to next year. Dehydrator and canner going full blast. We too are suffering greatly from the heat and high humidity. Short window for us to work! Our new motto is believe only what we see with our own eyes. Contemplate the rest.

My spot of beauty today...the sunflowers are blooming and the Zinnias are starting to bloom!

I’m a teacher - I start back on August 1, and I believe students start August 9. Thank you for contributing to the classroom. Every bit adds up and is VERY appreciated!

I went to a thrift store this morning as my youngest just moved into an apartment and is starting from scratch (as I mentioned earlier in this thread). Today‘s “treasures“ are a cutlery tray, silverware set (a bunch!), whisk, bread knife and four steak knives all for $5. He and his roommate will be thrilled! I love the challenge of being able to find good stuff at a bargain.

I then went to Dollar General - I noticed that MANY of the otc meds are in very short supply. Also, there are fewer in a package. I didn’t pick up any, but might next time I pop in just in case …..
I did peruse the dollar aisle and got another toothpaste (not nearly as many as last time I went in) and some bathroom cleaner. While there I picked up three more bottles of body wash (which should build me to a two year supply now I’d guess). I like the CarMex lip tubes. They used to be $1. They have now increased to $1.65 each. However, I did find a mixed flavor three pack for $3 so got that. And while we don’t need them currently, I picked up a couple more packs (all they had) of cough drops to put away at $1 each. Hubby goes through A LOT of them when sick so I want to ensure we have enough.

Slow and steady ….

Have any of you used the Golden Harvest canning jars from Walmart? Are they just as good as Ball? I went to set out another case of pint jars that I bought two weeks ago, and noticed they were Golden Harvest, instead of Ball or Kerr. Should I take them back, and replace them, or will they be ok? I was so excited to be able to find more pints that I just grabbed them without noticing what brand they were.

My score for the day! An elderly man at the dump gave me 2 brand new Dietz lanterns, a large and a small --- with the tags still on them! He said he didn't want them. I think he was cleaning out somebody's house, he put a bunch of stuff to the side. He seemed really shocked that I thanked him for them.
With my luck, they probably leak, or are missing parts. I'll get dh to check them out when he gets up.
The puppy ran off this morning. Miss Too Big for her Britches figured out how to get thru the electric fence. I heard the deer running and figured she was gone. I got seriously overheated looking for her and finally gave up and came back in the house. In about 10 minutes the kitten was sitting at the back door and I looked out the window and puppy was sitting on the stairs, looking very confused. She said, "Mom, you left me!" She's not going to be happy until she gives me a heat stroke or a heart attack.
I spent $225 at WM and only replaced part of what we ate last week. The Tyson chicken strips I buy came down $1 a bag, I guess nobody is buying them. Milk went up $1 to $3.66. Spam went up 50 cents a can in 2 weeks. They didn't have any of the Jim Dandy grits so I had to pay an extra dollar for Quaker.
Dh and I had serious words because he wasted all my disposable gloves. I told him not to use anymore --- he'd already gone thru 5 boxes, and he used the last box I had and stuffed it full of something else so that I wouldn't know it was empty.
This was back when Covid first became a thing, and you couldn't get any PPE. Then when I'm putting groceries away this morning, I see that he's been plundering again, and I moved the macaroni he knocked over, and there is an entire box of gloves on the bottom of the stack. He had put macaroni on top of, and on both sides, and I have been counting that big box as pasta forever. I really could have used those gloves some months back...

Speaking of lip tubes, my lips are constantly dry so I go through them. I like the Avon moisture therapy and a new to Avon one is KISS. The KISS lasts longer than even the moisture therapy. I get the Avon from Ebay. I also have a good supply of Carmex, in the tube and the pot. The stuff that comes in the pot seems to be very healing on chaffed skin. Glad I stocked up when they were still a dollar.

I already had several cases of pint jars in my storage barn when I started all this canning. I wanted to use them up, before buying any more. All I had were Ball and Kerr jars. That's all I've ever used. This is the first case of Golden Harvest that I've bought, so I didn't know how good of quality they would be. I need to buy more jars, so I won't feel bad if Golden Harvest is all Walmart has to offer from now on. Like I said, all I saw were stacks of flats of canning jars, and I grabbed a case without noticing the brand.

Thanks to All!

Because I have Sjogren's Syndrome, my mouth and lips stay really dry. That's one reason for so many dental problems. Each time I go to my dentist, he loads me up with lip balms, mouth moisturizers, and special toothpastes for free. I haven't had to buy any in years. I have a whole cabinet drawer full of all of it.

Now, if I can just find somebody to keep me supplied in free body lotions for the rest of my body! :spns:

I stocked up when they were $1 as well. Today‘s purchase helped me to replenish what I have used up (plus 1). I’m still trying to replenish what we use as I can (usually by two more).
