Good Morning, All! It's another beautiful morning on the farm here - clear and cool for now; with temps only getting up into the low 80's per the forecast. The grand-dog has been out already, grandson and his pal are still crashed out, and I've got a steaming hot cup of coffee in front of me - what more could I ask for?!

The kids have requested French Toast for breakfast, so I've got the fixings for that prepped and ready to go once they wake up. I'll have to run them home around 11 so that I can catch a nap before work - it's a Sunday, Monday, Thursday work week. I plan to plop the bag of beans I picked last night in Hubby's lap on my way to take my nap - he's planning to watch a race so he can snap them; then when I get up from my pre-work nap I'll get them in the jars and he can babysit the pressure canner while I get ready and then head out for work. I'm going to take most of the tomatoes I picked last night to daughter; she can pass them out to whoever she thinks might want them - I know I'm not going to do anything with them for the next few days, and by then there will be more to deal with - along with more beans - when I wake up from my post-work nap on Tuesday. Friday is our nearby small town's annual festival and some darn fool (cough, cough) signed me up to bring a few pies, so I will either have to stay up and bake them after I get off work or trust myself to actually get up when the alarm goes off and bake them then.

Well, I hear short people stirring around; guess that's my cue to gulp the rest of this cup of coffee and get ready to feed the masses

Take care all; stay safe out there!

Getting ready for church. Either DH doesn't pay attention to what I wear or he woke up in a new world today. My summer church uniform is a nice top and knee or below walking shorts, and compression stockings. He said are you wearing that and I said yes.

I ordered a knee brace from walmart. It came last night, but I didn't see it until this morning. Its the wrap around type. It does seem to be helping, so we'll see. I tried yet another rub and that too seems to be helping. I was in so much pain last night that I could not even concentrate to have a telephone conversation. But its better this morning, thank God. The pain comes and goes. When its not too bad I make every effort to get up and do stuff.

I'm considering going to ER for my knee, waiting for an appointment with ortho can take weeks. I think a shot would help.

I can't remember where this week went. That's a good reason to appreciate the moment.

We had to cancel our home fellowship for today. I'm still not feeling well. DS brought me some of his pain med's, and hopefully, they will work better. I'm going to try Tramadol instead of the hydrocodone today. He had these left from his bout with kidney stones. I've been alternating between the hydrocodone with Aleve and Tylenol. Not much has helped.

Ever had one of those weeks where you were busy, but at the end of the week didn't have much to show for it? That was me (us). Hopefully this new week will bring more visible results!

Rain has been a problem getting the new "power shed" finished, but other than the ridge cap it is ready to go...but Murphy showed up again. Found burnt busbar connection at the main breaker on the alt. energy panel, so that has to be changed out as well. Better to find it now, I suppose, then to have a complete failure when it's really needed. I can't complain - bought the box used years ago (as in nearly 20) and found a higher rated replacement for about a hundred bucks...with extra breakers included. At least it has been dry today...and my sunburn has turned into a nice tan ;)
Skipped the weekly grocery run. Rouse's had Powerade on sale earlier in the week so I grabbed 30 this past Wednesday, and a Folgers employee gifted a 2 1/2 lb container of coffee. Really didn't need anything else.
Grapes are taking forever to turn, but at least the birds haven't ravaged them...yet. Seems the overhead trellis makes it much harder for them to access the fruit.
Been up since 6:30 yesterday morning, so going to apologize now if this is confusing. ZZzz

Hi all. Hope this finds you all well. Last week was a very busy week. I was able to read the thread but not post like I would have wanted to. Hopefully more time this week.

I want to a yard sale yesterday and was able to add to some preps.

I will share all I got - 5 plastic baskets for school organization, stained glass angel, stuffed animal (dog toy), four big bang theory dvds (entire seasons), a gallon bag of tea light candles, six new candles with glass holder, brand new 32 oz shampoo, brand new car washing wax for hubby, a timer for hubby (he uses them in the garden), four cloth placemats, four kids’ dinner trays, an electric warmer for serving food (we will use at neighborhood potlucks and holidays), a new salad bowl, a few gift bags, some cookbooks (5), and a few canned goods (3 fruit, sliced carrots, new thing of tea, K cup pods, cranberry sauce, and a bag of Progresso dehydrated soup - just add water). The canned goods expire 2023-2024. I am sure there is some more, but that’s what I can think of before coffee. All of it was $20. I was thrilled.

My weekend consisted of a couple trips to Dollar General. Anytime I go into a store, I buy at least five items to add to preps/pantry. I got some dehydrated hashbrowns ($1), toothpaste, dehydrated onion, creole seasoning, pasta (3), pasta sauce. While ringing up I had a nice conversation with the cashier. Something rang up 25 cents too much than the shelf price. I made no big deal about it (didn’t ask for shelf price, but kindly mentioned the sticker isn't updated yet) and instead exclaimed and showed empathy on how I couldn’t imagine how they keep up with the changes. He replied that they had over 200 changes that day alone (2 went down, all others up). I then saw he had some frosted flakes cereal on a display behind him at 2/$5. I asked if he could please ring me up for two of them (Hubby loves cereal and the grocery store is now over $5 a box). Cashier replied those boxes were being “marked out” (because box was dented) and GAVE me four boxes for free. I was excited.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Well, I've managed to wash a load of Cary's work clothes, and have them hung on the line to dry. I swept the floors, and I'm done for the day. I'm down to only using Tylenol for pain, but the swelling is still there. It may be down a bit. I did manage to eat a cream cheese filled pastry last night. It was really soft and fresh, so there wasn't much chewing involved. If I feel up to it, tonight, I may try to cook something. Mashed potatoes and gravy sound good. I've got some frozen meatballs in the freezer to go with it. I've never been much of a soup eater, and the past few days that's all I've eaten. I'm so ready for a change.

Cary is in town now getting a trailor load of mulch and garden seeds. No telling what all he'll come back with. It's dangerous to let him go shopping by himself! :shk:

Well, he didn't quite buy the whole store, but close, LOL. He got a nice load of mulch for the roses and azaleas, and bought a medium size bag of azalea food. Bought 3 medium size bags of earthworm casings, more cow manure and garden soil. He came back with enough mustard, turnip, and lettuce seed to sow the whole county! It's ok, though, we'll use it all, eventually. Our new garden spot is roughly 15ft x 15ft, and we're going to sow that with some of the seed, along with one raised bed. I hope to have enough mustard and turnips/greens to can this Fall. If I had thought about it ahead of time, I would have ask him to check to see if they still had potato slips. I would have liked to have tried to plant some Fall potatoes, since we've done so much work on our raised beds. It might already be too late to plant those, though. I've never planted Fall potatoes, so I don't know when it's too late to plant.

With all this talk of food shortages, I'm excited about getting our "gardening hats" on once again. Cary has read enough, and heard enough talk about what's coming to get really motivated, too. He also got his large troybilt tiller going. That excited him, cause he was afraid it might have to go in the shop. It fired right up, and the tire is fixed. This thing is large enough to till up our whole backyard for a garden if need be. It's what we used it the past.

If I feel up to it, Wednesday, will be shopping day for us. Going to be another big one. I can't help it, but I have to keep stocking. Cary wants me to, so as long as he's not fussing about the bill, I'm going to keep on keeping on. I don't think it will be long to where we all wished we had done more to stock while we had a chance. What's available may get to the point of not being affordable. We aren't seeing shortages of any kind where we are, but I'm expecting that to change soon. Some things are already out of our price range, and we're having to cut spending in other areas.

SB - how do you fix your turnips? I usually just mix half and half with potatoes foraging or home fries, but I can always use ideas!

I like cooking the greens with little bits of cut up turnips mixed in. Cary loves to eat them raw, but likes me to boil just the turnips in with a bit of bacon grease, salt, and black pepper. He won't eat the greens. Neither of us like fries made out of them or roasted.

Finally a month later my covid symptoms are gone and I feel better!! Cleaning out the “failures” of our garden this summer. Got a new raised bed, now while on sale for the spring. Will plant some fall stuff this next 2 weeks.

I need to go through the kitchen cabinets and double check the mouse we had last week only got to that one bag of gravy mix in a drawer. We rarely get mice in the house (one every couple years maybe) but when we do they always go to this one drawer first so I leave a pack of cheap gravy in it to keep it busy till I get them.

Took an afternoon stroll to check on how things are growing on the property. Walnuts, Pecans, Persimmons, Sassafras, sarsaparilla, pumpkins, all growing like crazy. Hazelnut, Peach and mulberry trees didn’t produce anything this year. Some corn but it got a late start. Been a strange year weather wise so not overly surprised some things haven’t done very well. Wife is going to town tomorrow and will pick up some stuff to get our raised beds started for some fall planting and to just be ready for next spring. The weather is finally starting to cool a little so I’ll be able to start getting some work done.

Cary has been working all morning unloading and spreading the trailer load of mulch all around the azaleas and roses. Finally got that finished, before it rains. Since they were all new, they have really struggled this summer from the heat and dry weather. They would have done much better if we had put mulch around them in the beginning. Rain is in our forecast for tonight through tomorrow, but I'll believe it when I see it. Since it's in our forecast, we will wait til Thursday about going shopping. That will also give me an extra day to get over this ordeal. Our weather is supposed to cool way down into the 80's for the highs, once the rain comes. I think for 7 days or more, 80's for the highs. We'll be sowing the Fall seeds in a couple of weeks if this cool down keeps going. A cool (to us here in the Deep South) August usually is a sign of a colder and wetter winter. 80's for highs is way too cool for August.

I made meatballs, mashed potatoes, brown gravy, and butter beans last night for supper. I put a little of everything in my plate, and smashed it all up good, then poured gravy all over it to make it kind of soupy. I ate it without any trouble, but was in a bit of pain afterwards. I'm finally on the mend. I haven't taken anything for pain so far this morning. I've still got a few days left on the steroid med.

I ordered some eggplant salve for a spot I have on my lower leg. I had 2 skin cancers burned off years ago, and this spot is close to where those were. It's just a small reddish spot that's been there for quite a while now. Not raised or anything, but my sister died from melanoma cancer, so I've been watching it. I just learned about this salve, and how it's used to treat skin cancers. I thought I would give it a try to see what happens.

Happy for y'all that it's supposed to cool down! The lowest temp forecast for the next 7 days here is 95°. There's a chance of rain, but recently the rain has gone around us. I'm weary of the extended really hot, really dry summer. It started early this year and has not eased off. We're blessed to have decent air conditioning, though!

Yeah, a big relief from the heat. 80's is perfect weather for us. No ac needed, just a fan. I think, either tonight or tomorrow night, the low is supposed to be down to 66! Unheard of for August. We're getting more rain this month than usual, too. Had a hefty thunderstorm just miss us last night. Thunder rattled our windows, but no rain.

Our weather is supposed to cool down too because rain is predicted for several days in a row. But if it doesn't rain the temps will be back in the mid to high 90's.

I cooked a pound of navy or great northern beans last week. I think we ate on it for about 3 days. I didn't care for them, but ate them anyway. I had forgotten about the ham seasoning that I have. I finally added some chicken seasoning to mine and they were better. This week I'm cooking a pound of baby limas and will remember the ham seasoning this time.

I've got another package of deer steak thawed up, I may bread it this time, DH really likes it breaded. I made spaghetti last night with deer burger, it was good. There was only a little freezer burn on it which I cut off. These packages are dated 2016. DH didn't say anything about it being off tasting. I didn't notice anything myself.

When I wake up my knee hurts a lot and it takes a couple of hours for the anti inflammatory to kick in, along with the voltaren rub, Then its almost pain free for a few hours. I'm still trying to get as much done as I can during that time. I called the VA to make an appointment but the soonest that was available was the end of the month. So when DH goes Thursday I'm going to do a walk in. No telling how long I will have to wait, but at least I'll get a referral to Ortho, then that will probably take weeks. I think a shot would help alot.

Get some 5% Lidicane and mix with the Voltaren.

No wonder I hadn’t seen updates on SB’s tooth, I was on the wrong thread!

Getting back to canning, made a batch of peach jalapeño jam. I’d bought the last box of peaches at the store, and they had to sit for two days because I had a biopsy scheduled. There were a few that were a little bit soft, but the jam came out okay. The grocery store had marked down the low sugar pectin, so I was able to use about half the sugar, and it’s just a little tart.

I learned that if you’re slow to come out of general anesthesia, ask them to forgo the Versed. I woke up as they were wheeling me out of the room, and felt alert right away. The down side is that the anesthesia burns like a son of a gun when it hits the vein, the Versed makes you forget about it.

There is a pharmacist making Tic Toc videos about compounding he is how I found out.
I also had a cream my brother gave me before he passed away in 2017.
He had back surgery the year before and before they could clear him fir surgery the surgeon also owned a compounding pharmacy and made a cream to help him deal with pain.

Moldy, my mom used to make a dish of creamed turnips and carrots. I believe she cooked them separately then combined them and added a white sauce. Maybe a little cheese in the white sauce. Very good.

I finished harvesting my miserable potato crop just before it rained yesterday. I think the entire harvest would not fill a 5- gallon bucket more than 2/3's full. Just like last year, they are not going to keep which is disappointing both in amount, size and keeping. I've been enjoying the new potatoes though.

I left the green beans to go to seed and have started harvesting those. With the drought the beans were not good so seed saving was the only way to utilize this year's crop.

Something destroyed the cucumbers both the individual fruits and now the plant. Never had this happen before. Losing the plant to blight yes, all fruits being ruined by some bug never.

I have harvested okra and need to get it cut for dehydrating. We're under a boil order since Friday night or Saturday which is to continue through Thursday. I don't want to wash food that is going into the dehydrator with unsafe water so am waiting to do the okra. Today I washed and chopped summer squash, carrots, celery and potatoes for the crockpot. I felt safe doing those since they were going to cook longer than the boil time for water purification. I have a boatload of dirty dishes waiting for the all clear as I do not want to wash dishes in unsafe water and don't want to boil enough to do all the dishes. At least we have water to boil!! Saturday and Monday the water was shut off for a couple hours which didn't bother me much. I used stored water for flushing and washing hands while I waited for boiled water to cool enough to use. I always have a 2-quart kettle on the back of the stove and two Britta pitchers on the counter so I'm always good for drinking water for a day or two. It amazes me that so many people's first thought is to run to the store and buy water when all they need to do is boil it. You'd think the term "boil order" would be a clue!!

Our little rain was very nice as is the cooler weather this week. However, the rain barely dampened the soil. Cracks in the ground are at least 1" wide and the rain made no difference. Still these tiny rains keep the plants alive if not thriving.

I've harvested two tomatoes. Variety is Big Boy and size was smaller than a tennis ball. Guess with the drought I'll give thanks for them and try not to complain too much. The taste was good. The cherry tomatoes are also starting to ripen and I have picked four so far. I went to the downstairs pantry and counted how many pints of tomatoes I still have and I can manage without canning this year so I'm not worrying about lack of harvest. If the Lord provides, I will can, if not, I'll give thanks for my pantry.

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
I am starting to get excited!!

I believe Fall is here now.....with night time temps in the 60's and Jewel Weed blooming....those are THE SIGNS!! The temps have dropped a bit too.....still daytime highs in the upper 80's or low 90's but MUCH BETTER than it has been!!

I went through all my seeds last night......I have enough to stock a seed store!! I plan to use as much as I can of the older seed, and I have already purchased more seed for next year......LOTS OF SEED!!

Fall and Spring are my BEST times of the year, and I also LOVE the vegetables that are able to be grown at those times of year. Already have some of my Alaska peas planted and have more to go, as well as Sugar Snaps and Sugar Peas for stir fry. Holding off a bit on the Beets and lettuce and radishes, but will get those going by the end of the month. I really have to get my broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage plants started.....and I am going to try Parsnips again....have never been able to get them to "make," but I DEARLY LOVE them!!!

Yep, the best time of the year is here.....YIPPEE!!

High today, only 74!!!!! This is unheard of for August. It's also raining. I'm almost cold.

I had a set back last night. With my tooth and all the inflammation, I've developed an ear infection in the ear on the same side. I have no antibiotics, and don't want to go in for a doctor's visit, unless it gets worse. I'm using raw garlic juice as drops, and washing my ear out with a syringe and a hydrogen peroxide solution. I have drops for earaches that I'm also using. I think this infection has been coming on even before I had the tooth extracted. A few days beforehand, it was stopped up. I thought it was just fluid, but it appears to be an infection now. Lots of sharp ear pain, and tenderness down on my neck underneath my ear. This whole ordeal is driving me crazy, and I'm plain worn out, so would you all please continue to pray?

I have got to go grocery shopping tomorrow, and Saturday, we have to travel over into Alabama to pick up Mom from another one of her trips! I just don't have time for all this illness.

Good Morning, All! Hope everyone is having a good day - it's a cool, pretty morning here, but is supposed to get up to around 80*F - not too bad for August. My plans for today include going to the pool with the neighbor lady, running a few loads of laundry and hanging them out to dry, and then picking and prepping tomatoes for canning - I'll do the canning tomorrow after I wake up from my post work nap. We use the tomatoes mostly to add to chili and other soups. Once Hubby gets home from work, I need to go out and till between the rows in the garden, and check the sweet corn to see if any is ready to pick. Hmmm... maybe I'd better find some time to clear the island counter top in case I get to prep corn for freezing...

I would also be canning green beans again today (ran a canner load last night) but Hubby had taken some to his Mama yesterday, and his sister decided she needed some as her garden didn't do well this year - and Hubby walked out the door this morning with the whole dang bag that I had picked - enough for a canner load plus. It would have been nice if he'd at least left me enough to cook for supper, but I just shook my head and let him go. The ones I picked were yellow beans and while they still have some flowers, I don't expect to get a lot more of them. The green beans are starting to flower though, and I've had a few set on, so I should have more beans to can soon - if the heat doesn't slow down the blooming.

I've got the first load of laundry in the washer and will have time to hang it on the line before I head to the pool with the neighbor lady. I don't lollygag, I should have time to get the second load hung on the line as well. Then all throw in all the canning towels once I'm done for the day and get them taken care of as well. I have to work tomorrow night, but then have a glorious 4 days off in a row. Note to self: lose your phone Friday morning....

Washer just stopped so I'm off to the clothesline - take care all; and I hope you all have a safe and happy day!

I have poblanos, never thought of stuffing them. I'll have to try that!
I let them get pretty big... cut off the tops and take out the seeds...par boil for a few and stuff with cheese..mozzarella ...then cook hamburger like for chili and add red goya sofrito sauce to the hamburger ..cook together for while on low....put the peppers in a baking dish and cover with hamburger sauce and bake about 30 minutes..at 350...they not very hot...so if you want more bite add some hot pepper to the hamburger mixture. I also put in a square baking dish so the sofrito mixture stays rather thick on the peppers

I still have one more seed order to do and will be done ...I am ordering the same seed from more than one seed company for the things we love the most..Carolina sevia butterbean seed for example...found that if we sprouted them before we planted.... we were getting a far better germination rate than just soaking and planting..

Have already planted some stuff for fall..the lettuces..and a bunch of greens...still a few to plant...but getting there

Praying for you SB, I can sympathize with ongoing pain. I'm better today than yesterday. I even took a muscle relaxer last night and slept like a log and didn't get up until after 9:00am.

My laundry is caught up, but do have to change the sheets for DH. I do have dishes to wash. I cooked two good meals yesterday. DH has been crabby, so I'm trying to help him get in a better mood. Sounds like I need to dig out my cobbler recipe to make today.

One of my cousins called me this morning. She has been canning a lot. She did it years ago but has started back because she says we do not know what is going to happen. Her oldest grandson is a prepper. Some how the call got on face time, neither of us looked very good. I've never had a face time conversation, have no idea how that happened. The older I get the more I look like my mother.

I finally got several cucumbers! I was about to give up, glad I didn't. Everything seems to have gotten their second wind.
It's misting rain and about 80, a nice change of weather. I need to take sugar water out to the hummers.
I'm going back out in a bit and plant some seeds. Mostly beans and greens.
That's all for now. Take care!
