Right.

Like Jimmy Carter tried to convince us that the "American Malaise" was permanent, when his economic wage/price controls did not work.

Like Obama tried to convince us that life in America had already been as good as it was ever GOING to get, and it was all downhill from here, when HIS failed economic policies that were so punitive of business and private enterprise were tanking the economy and causing increasing unemployment (remember that famous quote? Where he questioned "how's Trump going to find the money" to fix the economy and reduce unemployment--and then he DID, by FREEING up the economy to work as capitalism will, when it's left ALONE?)

Neither here nor there.
Folks in Russia would buy or rent little patches of land with simple houses called "dachas" for the summer, growing big gardens and canning and preserving the produce for the long Russian winters. The extra was sold in unofficial markets, and for the most part the government turned a blind eye. They knew the state farms didn't raise enough to feed everyone. It was better that food came from somewhere, rather than face food riots.

Everyone here really needs to read the book Red Famine.
