:siren:Michele Obama's red and black dress

Overview
siren:
Red and black is most commonly used by anarcho-syndicalists, anarcho-communists and libertarian-left unions or labour activists.
:siren:
First used by anarchists during the Spanish Civil War: The red flag of socialism (Confederación Nacional del Trabajo) and the black flag of anarchism (Federación Anarquista Ibérica). The red and black colours are also often used by the syndicalism movement
:siren:
The presence of black flags together with red ones became a feature of Anarchist demonstrations throughout Europe and the Americas.

no, there was a long thread here about MO's dress and it was all in good fun; but I thought the whole lot of them were dressed a bit odd; and decided to check out the black and red flags and.......

Syndicalism, its strengths & weaknesses
first published in Red & Black Revolution

A magazine of libertarian communism

Issue 1 October 1994

SYNDICALISM is the largest organised tendency in the libertarian movement today. It has built large workers' unions, led major struggles, been the popular expression of anarchism in many countries. To understand the anarchist-communist view of syndicalism we have to look at its roots, its core beliefs and its record.

You're really on to something there. I think they were signaling to their hard core followers that they were going to stop and blow up an animal testing facility on their way home.

Honestly? I think red and black are the new "in" colors. They're bold colors together, and I think if anything the image is that there are bold changes coming. For some, they think the changes are long overdue. For others, they fear the changes are the end of our country as we know it. But, truthfully, I just think it was a fashion statement and nothing else at all.

Halloween, black widow, lava.

I did a google search on Michelle's Dress and it seems to be the hot topic on every blog and forum around. Lots of theories, lots of supposed African symbolism etc. It's like a Rorschach of each person's fears.

Quite amusing seeing the amount of ink spent on this.

People often choose red because it is a standout, and patterned clothing (stripes, shapes, etc) photographs better.

Clothes DO stick in the minds of observers and make them remember you. I went to a seminar on outfits back when I was competing....we were actually given a list of colors and designs that look good on video and make us stand out to the judges. Yeah - it does work.

Red & Black are the cool colors; the school I work with has red & black for colors; on stage red & black is sharp and are power colors-and every entertainer knows this.

I already mentioned that the family was color co-ordinated. Shows they put some thought into it.

JMHO  but I feel they were definately making a statement with the colors they chose - red and black = colors of the anarcho-syndicalist and anarcho-communist movements......:dot5:

qt-a_dg.gif

The red-and-black flag is the symbol of the anarcho-syndicalist and anarcho-communist movements. Black is the traditional color of anarchism, and red is the traditional color of socialism. The red-and-black flag combines the two colors in equal parts, with a simple diagonal split.

Typically, the red section is placed on the top-left corner, with the black on the bottom-right corner of the flag. This symbolizes the co-existence of anarchist and socialist ideals within the anarcho-syndicalism movement, and to symbolize the more socialistic means of the movement leading to a more anarchistic end.

:dot5: the pendulum has been swung to the FAR LEFT.......

I don't know nuthin about what certain colors mean or what photographs better (etc.). All I know when I see that dress is that it is one ugly dress!!! Of all the cute, attractive, classy dresses out on the market, she (or her handlers) chose that one?????? :shk:

This too shall pass.

If they'd put a little more thought into it, they would have realized that Michelle's dress clashed with the oldest daughter's dress (what are those girls names, anyway?). It's really hard to match reds.

Just saw a video on utube that Glenn Beck did before 11/4, and it was the allegiance song to BHO, with the stage and flags etc done in red and black. Will search and post the link if I can. THought Glenns choice of colors was odd at the time, but now it's making some sense...

Ya' know, my first thought of her dress was a Black Widow dress, openly acknowledging that she would be, or already is, a "Black Widow".

The use of color is extremely important in conveying a message and evoking emotional response.

Color 101 in design school.

I'LL SHOW THEM WHATS IN.

From now on I will only wear RED, WHITE and BLUE.

You will probably see a lot of the "in crowd" and teens falling again for the "cute little symbols" that will be on the new generation of clothing. Look for hammer and sickle. Subliminal conditioning.

I have a question. CAN WE NOW CALL THE BLACKS "Americans" or do we still have to call them "African-Americans"??? Do they feel like full Americans now that Obama is president-elect???

I hope so, I hope they work to make America stronger and more united then it ever was. It's possible but I don't have much hope.

Look, lets face it, whenever a politician is going to be seen in public they choose the clothes that they are going to wear in order to present an image or convey a specific mood or idea. (REMEMBER THOSE BUSINESS CLASSES WE TOOK THAT TOLD US TO BE MINDFUL AS TO HOW WE DRESS FOR OUR FIRST INTERVIEWS? BECAUSE HOW WE DRESS SENDS A STRONG MESSAGE) For example the men will wear certain types of ties in certain colors according to the scenario that they will be engaged in, in the past the Presidents have been told to look more like the " working class" take off the tie and blazer and roll your sleeves up. Obama purposely did not wear the Flag lapel pin, why? The pin is worn to shown respect and patriotism for the United States, this was seen by everyone. So if you truly believe that the colors of the clothes worn by Obama and his family was simply a "fashion statment,'' uh-NO. there was a message and I believe it was pretty clear...

Well, if the Obama parents were sending a message, then the other parents must have been sending the same one. Three of the other children on stage in that one photo are also wearing black. The little one on the far right is wearing black, red, and white.

I agree that Michelle Obama could have found a more fashionable dress to wear. It reminded me of something off of Project Runway that was very poorly designed and even more poorly made. It did not even fit her...look at the photo of her profile. Side seams?

As for any symbolism intended, I have no idea.

As for the American Flag lapel pin, Obama IS wearing one. It was one of the first things I noticed the night he won the election.

What I find VERY interesting about the above photos is that the pin is clearly visible in the group shots but is missing in the pics of him by himself at the podium.

Somebody been 'shoppin? :shr: (not meant to imply the OP did)

ETA: I added the photo from his acceptance speech (googled it) and it clearly shows the pin. I cropped the photo so that is was small enough to upload. Original photo is here: scroll down to almost the bottom of the page. I am sure there are others out there.

red star black flag

symbol of socialism. Used by Zapatista Revolutionary Army, but has been socialist symbol for many years.

That's probably where the color choice came from, both for Glenn Beck and the Obamas.

But the story of this dress is the black widow, while unintentional, it's funny as heck.

By the way, you young ones don't recall, but Jackie Kennedy was the most beautiful woman to grace the WHite House as its first lady in the 20th century.

The Black flag and the Red star is a symbol of socialism, that fights for the pressed working-class, the black flag a red star are symbols of the working people in it's fights of strike, and it has been used through history and to the current day to signify solidarity with leftist activism and movements.

My take on Jackie Kennedy is that she was fashionable & classy but rather odd looking. Eyes too far apart-

But I wasn't around when she was The First Lady.

Mole, I think the dress does fit her. Those seams appear to be because the front of the dress, the red part, is an insert, I believe. But I do think its an odd dress for the occasion.

Ender, a more, diplomatic, way to describe Jackie would be to say she appeared unique, rather than odd. LOL

Jackie was told that she would have to make concessions now that her husband was president. She replied, "I will. I"ll wear hats."

She helped make Givenchy the fashion designer of the 60s, and undertook a renovation of the White House that helped salvage antiques as well as redecorate it, something it badly needed at the time. I think she was also the first First Lady to donate her inaugural dress to the Smithsonian.

I wonder who Michelle Obama's designer is. Quite often they'll make a point to wear styles by local designers during their campaign and inauguration. Hillary Clinton picked an Arkansas designer to do many of her clothes when Bill was campaigning.

Celebs and other VIPs take a lot of things into consideration when selecting apparel. Note the blue screen backdrop; I'm certain their advisors picked something that would stand out against the backdrop rather than blend with it. The heavy makeup so many wear is because of the lighting used by the news crews. It looks like they've got an inch of goop on their faces close up - and they do - because otherwise they'll look washed out in photos and from a distance. Theater makeup isn't called greasepaint for no reason.
