  • Ferrari's new Purosangue is a four-door model with SUV-like proportions powered by a 715-horsepower V-12 engine.
  • The Purosangue, Italian for "thoroughbred," is Ferrari's first-ever production four-door model.
  • The new model will give Ferrari's clients an upscale alternative to rivals like the Porsche Cayenne when deliveries begin next year.
Ferrari on Tuesday revealed its new Purosangue, the 75-year-old sports car maker's first-ever four-door production vehicle.

The Purosangue looks like an SUV, akin to other luxury-sports SUVs from brands like Porsche and Maserati. But despite its size, shape and higher stance, the company insists that the Purosangue – which means "thoroughbred" in Italian – is a sports car, designed from the ground up as a true Ferrari.

The Purosangue may not have a traditional Ferrari shape, but it will sound like a Ferrari. The new model is powered by a 6.5-liter, 715-horsepower V-12 engine that is mounted behind the front axle, rather than over it as with most SUVs and crossovers.

Ferrari said that the location of the engine – and of the Purosangue's transaxle, mounted at the rear – distributes the vehicle's weight almost evenly among the four wheels, improving its handling.

While Ferrari is best known for its two-seat sports cars, the company has been building four-seaters since the early 1960s, and all-wheel-drive models since the FF coupe was introduced in 2011. But even Ferrari admits the Purosangue moves the storied brand into new territory.

The Purosangue will start at 390,000 euros in Italy, Ferrari said, making it the company's second-most-expensive production model behind the 440,000-euro SF90 hybrid sports car.

Deliveries will begin in the second quarter of 2023 in Europe, in the third quarter in the United States, and by the end of next year in other global markets, the automaker said.

Despite its hefty starting price, the Purosangue is likely to be popular with Ferrari's affluent clients.

Rival Porsche's two SUVs, the Cayenne and Macan, together accounted for about 55% of Porsche's production in 2021. But Ferrari won't let the Purosangue get quite that popular: The company plans to limit production of the Purosangue to no more than 20% of its total annual output, or only about 3,000 units per year.

Even since somebody in the automotive world figured out if you had a tow hook on the back of your vehicle to haul a trailer (gee that means you have a boat) then the whole prestige of a high priced "SUV" hit the market place......and have been cranking out the pricy deals ever since.

I'll just keep my KIA Soul. The only thing it will pass is a gas station, but it is paid for and drives as well as the day I drove it off the lot with 18 miles on the odo. I worked on cars for years, lost my love affair for them many years ago.

..this thing is a poster child for "butt ugly"!
...
My American 4 door from 1968, could carry multiple sheets of 4' x 8' plywood, couple of 55 gal. water barrels, more with the factory roof rack, and if anyone laughed at the fake woodgrain on the sides, it would blow your doors off!

This Ferrari..I've seen better looking golf carts...

This thing is 100k more expensive than a Bentley Bentayga SUV. 200k more than an Aston Martin DBX. Both are SUV’s in the same price category as this rolling abomination called a Purosangue. Neither have a V-12; but still offer sprightly performance.

Ferrari has become a whore for the almighty dollar. All while tossing their storied history in the dumpster. Hilarious.

Long live Alfa Romeo! Scuderia!

A literal translation of "Purosangre" is "pure blood". As applied to horses (whose access to horse paste is not restricted) it means "thoroughbred", the pure racing breed. But now we use the words for people too, so interesting timing.

I want a new Honda CR-V. That thing wouldn't fit my lifestyle or my car insurance budget.

Since I've been in Iowa, the only place I see performance cars are at shows. Most people I know drive F-150 trucks or economy sedans.

I am liking the GR Corolla.
AWD, 300hp, 6 speed. It does have 2 doors too many for my liking, but the rest of the package is ok. Eh, maybe the GT86 then.

No more than I lust for a 4-door Porsche or Masarati.
.A Hybrid or Diesel powered Yukon XL-ish kind of ride - hell yeah!

And $383,000.00 more than my 2008 Ford Focus manual transmission ( with hand crank windows ).

i'd rather have your Focus too. I'm a hardcore Alfisti (devotees of the marque are called Alfisti). The only thing enzo Ferrari ever did right was manage Alfa Romeo's formula 1 team in the 1930s. He learned his trade from Alfa Romeo. Ferraris would have been nothing without the cachet, engineering, and unadulterated love Alfa Romeo drivers give their cars.

And Ferrari as a standalone company only lasted until 1969; when it was put into receivership and given to fiat group (also italian .gov owned) to manage.

My SIL drives a Maserati SUV

A Levante is using the same unibody as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV. Different engine but many components are swapped between both vehicles.

I'd rather have the Alfa, personally. The handing (and particularly the weight distribution) is better.

My Brother & SIL do it to flash their wealth
Many do. Mine is more just a quirky(read that expensive to fix) car, that has become quite rare, due to the expense to fix thingee.
Because of cars, and other toys, I have no "wealth" to flash, LOL.
