Planting Trellis Blackeye Peas

I did something different this year, I grew my blackeye peas on a trellis. I stretched netting down a row and I didn't go to too much trouble about putting it as low to the ground as I normally would with beans. I am so pleased with the results they grew like pole beans and I got a better yield and they were certainly easier to pick.

I kind of recall that Black-eyed peas are a semi-vining/semi-bush type. How high did the vines on your plants climb?

I tried growing them once long, long ago and they got about four feet tall. The beans grew off of spikes that sort of stuck up out from the plants. They had gorgeous vivid yellow blossoms.

The trellis is a good idea. I'd probably use cattle panels if I tried growing them again.

I planted Californa cow peas and some of them grew out of reach up a tall corner post. I got a bunch of trellis netting (4'x100') real cheap and stretched some rather haphazardly down a row on five ft. posts just to try it. They grew over the top of that.

They were so much easier to pick and I really liked the fact that I could see where I was standing and reaching my hands.

I am in Arkansas and I would NEVER reach into a plant to pick anything, if I couldn't see into the plant. That's why I trellis any cucumbers, squash or melons. And it's why I now grow my strawberries in pots and containers.

Georgia probably has a worse danger of snakes than Arkansas, so trellising your beans is probably a really good idea.

I use a trellis on anything and everything I can. It keeps the garden compact and easier to manage.

That is why we have 4 working cats. No snakes or other types of critters anymore. The only thing that is still around are possums and raccoons. I shoot them to keep it under control.

I have only grown black eyed peas once. The ones I grew were quite upright (called California BEP's). They thrived despite my ignoring them most of the time. One thing I noticed was that wasps were quite drawn to them.
