I talked to a tree trimming company crew thats clearing the power lines about getting wood chips from them and said yes and looks like I'm in good for a few more truck loads with them. Turn the pile few times with the kubota and get it to rot down some. :eleph::eleph::eleph::eleph:

I wish I could use this method but unfortunately all I have every had any luck in raising with this stuff is termites, carpenter ants, yellow jackets and hornets, fire ants, and nematodes. Sigh.

The only time I got termites was with store bought bags. But ants... geez. Fortunately, not carpenter but I swear they get in every pile until I get it all spread out. But then I am spreading it, not composting it.

We're on the local tree companies permanent list. Usually get a couple loads a year, except when they are doing local powerlines, then we get a bunch.

I don't know if you have quack grass down there, but if you do make sure get it turned before it gets established. Had one pile that turned into a solid root ball!

ditto on the chips . . . we get 4-6 trucks a year from Asplund when they're cutting local power line right of ways. bet ya didn't know that a lot of these guys actually have to PAY to dump chips if they can't find people to take them . . . in other words ASK and ye shall receive . . . likely as much as you'd care to take.

call your power company - ask who is in charge of trees and right of ways - let them know you're interested . . . betcha get covered up in 'em

BTW what summer says about BLACK WALNUT is real. it'll kill your veggies . . . be careful with it

I have been asking various contractors working for the power company and Aaplund was one of them and I think the federal government got after them for hiring illegals (Mexicans). Someone was telling me I have to be willing to pay the crew a $100 per-load and no I'm not paying a $100 for a load of wood chips they have to find a place to dump it and not just anywhere.

big time different here . . . I may be very much more rural than you are? sometimes I get calls asking if I want more - and have to turn them away :shr:

I lucked into a major wood chip score 2 years ago--a crew was clearing the interstate right of way cutting nearly all of the trees and shredding or chipping them
they were looking for somewhere to dump the chips so I offered to let them dump them on my place (it is 3 miles from the interstate)
I have 1/2 acre 6 feet deep in wood chips

You dig into that it should be black gold by now and perfect for the garden.

It is prety good now but it really needs one more year to be marvelous--I am using it as mulch around fruit trees right now and will probably plant pumpkins in it later this year
I have some (4 truck loads) at the house that is between 3 and 4 years old and it is going to be used generously in the home garden this year along with the rabbit manure I was able to get

Nice. I'm going to have to buy mine. Tree trimmer locally has his place located a bit too far away to make it worth the gas to go get the free stuff. Would end up costing me nearly as much in gas plus dealing with the traffic in the area his place is located-right inside where the large cities business district begins.

You have to catch them when they are working in your area and it is generally with their effort to dump it in your yard rather than haul it an even longer distance or worse like having to pay the county to dump it in a land fill.

Maybe after a hurricane but that's a long wait and Iffy. All these Developments around here scrap everything to the ground so not many trees to come down.

We have received load N0#3 Wednesday afternoon and we are getting much rain for the last few days and almost got their truck stuck. I'm having them dump it on one place on my property thats easy to get to and moving the pile using the Kubota tractor I have and so far the pile is growing.

Up to load N0# 5 and should see them pulling in to dump another one some time this week, the truck seems to hold a good bit of shredded tree it takes me about an hour to move the pile they dump and relocate it.
The pile I'm making with it is now about 6'Ft high, 15Ft wide and almost 20Ft long I'm hoping they keep bringing the stuff in and may need to stop when it gets to 50" to 60Ft long, That should hold me for a while.

Used to be a mill near Sanford where I could get pickup loads for free. Used to use it for stall bedding and mulch for garden.

I have lost track with how many truck loads of wood chips I have gotten but the pile has grown and I will tell them with the next load thats enough. Now I need to take the tractor in June and relocate the whole pile a few feet over from where it is and do this three or four times until it's all composted down to black top soil.

Use it as mulch! Spread it now and let it break down in stu.

Then you only have to move it once.
Well, that's how I have to do it. With a tractor I would probably do it your way too.

Well I turned this huge pile of wood chips using the tractor and it took me most of the day to do it and its looking good as it's composting nicely the pile is obviously cooking on the inside and I got this done just before three days of rain moved in.
The idea is to get it all composted down so it looks like the bagged top soil you buy from lowes or home-depot and then use it to fortify the garden soil.
