FOOD Tomato shortage?

West central FL - Potatoes did OK, but not great. Tomatoes did good - we had "Sweet 100' tomatoes by the bucketful from 3 plants. All my tomatoes would have been 8 ft tall if I'd had trellis instead of cages. Squash & cukes did pretty good until the squash beetles found them. Watermelons were a bust. Had a dozen or so that looked OK but never ripened, then split.

That garden was mowed/tilled a month ago. Already started tilling the area and have seeds started for the Fall garden. I got the sweet potatoes started a couple of months ago.
It almost looks like you got some weed growing in that greenhouse. Might be a reason there are no maters on them. :lkick:

NAW...... Can't be that!

Actually I worked in nukes & haven't even seen the stuff in over 40 years but it's still funny!

Fall garden is ready to plant - just gotta make time for it! Some of the seeds I started last week are already 3" tall plants!

Last fall Walmart had cans of diced tomatoes on sale for .50 a can. A whole end cap full. I asked the stocker if he knew why just the diced tomatoes? He said they got too many cases and had to get them out of the back. The date on the can was good for almost two years so I bought several flats of them. I made sauce using a can and the tomatoes were good tasting. What I noticed when buying the sale tomatoes was no shoppers in the store were even looking at them. I got the odd glances when I was filling my cart with the flats.

I know the feeling. When I shop, I buy by the flats not by cans. I get strange looks, too, when I've got several flats of different items in my cart. A check out girl made a comment once about it.

Ive always had huge success with tomatillos and make tons of salsa Verde however this year a tomatillo big similar to colorado potato beetle laid it all to waste. Normally very easy to grow.grow

I had 3 volunteer tomatillo plants pop up this year. The plants are huge with lots of flowers and I've had exactly ONE tomatillo try to grow, it got about the size of a shooter-marble and dropped off. It didn't look very good so I trashed it. And that's been it. There are a lot of some kind of bee around so pollination shouldn't be a problem.

My tomatoes have been OK here in central MD. The whole first run of them pretty much got destroyed by squirrels. But for some reason the tree-rats have left them alone for the last couple of weeks. So I was able to can 3 quarts of just plain tomatoes, and eat a bunch in sandwiches, salsa etc.

I've learned to say I buy for potluck food. Most of the younger cashiers have no idea what a potluck is. I know this because they say what is potluck food?

One lady ask us if we liked beans, since I had several flats of different kinds in my cart. I just said, "Yep", and let it go at that.

So now the @#)&%q!%&)#+@ voles are eating the bases of the Swiss chard plants. Every day I go out and another plant is starting to wilt. Now I have about 6 plants to either freeze or dehydrate. Sigh. I doubt the others will last the week. I don't know how the settlers here didn't starve to death. Oh, and the bunnies are eating the bases of the pole beans. Those are now double fenced!

When I lived in Minnesota, we had a cat who'd go three houses down the alley and eat green tomatoes right off of a neighbor's plants.

They naturally gave her diarrhea and she made a nice deposit right in my kitchen sink!

Dumb cat liked Kool-Aid and Coke, too. She was a sweetie, but definitely a little strange.
