Yeah, our Sandhill Cranes flew south a couple of weeks ago. Still don't see lots of fireweed blooming, so we've got some time. Saw a report that termination dust was sighted, bah, humbug.

Aint, what my friends and I have observed in North Bend, Wa. were Very early signs of Fall.
Late June the spiders were “ballooning” through the air and they normally do this in early August.

By early July, they are all over my plants.

The Salal berries were already ripe a month early. We’re covered with the stuff here on the east end of the Snoqualmie Valley.

The blue asters which we see blooming on the sides of the roads in late Aug., early Sept. were blooming in early July.

The Fireweed blooms were pretty much spent late July early Aug.

Blackberries and apples were picksble a month early. The bears here Love it.

Late July, the squirrels were starting to go crazy storing peanuts and sunflower seeds like they were in a terrible hurry to get ready for winter. They’re quite frantic now and are eating the cherry tomatoes off my Sungolds.

My tomatoes ripened and were ready to pick in June which is rare.

On Aug. 10th, we were up at Ganges on Salt Spring island up in BC and the geese were already flying south.

Two days later we were on the buoy over at Montague harbor which was across the way. It was so hot up there but at 8pm, we were all sitting in salon on my boat when we All felt a “shift” Literally and a cold breeze shot through the boat and although it was still very light outside, the light “shifted” to that of Fall.

My friend Cathy and I looked at each other and said at the same time, “Fall is here!”

I got home last week and my lush gardens in two days went from Summer to Fall. They now look sad and sparse of flowers. Weird.

All the leaves up at Roche Harbor and at home started their Fall colors two weeks ago.

And the Big thing/sign I saw was two days ago on my back patio, I saw white Woolybear caterpillars ambling across my back patio!

They’re actually sand colored, not the usual black and orange!

This is what I found about White Woolybears…

“What does a white woolly bear caterpillar mean?

White (sand-colored): White woolly worms are said to predict winter snowfall. Spotting one is supposedly a strong indicator that heavier than average snows -- or even a blizzard -- can be expected in the region during the winter season”.

So, with all the unusually early signs of Fall, we may have a real humdinger of a Winter. V

Just returned from Europe (Switzerland, France, Germany, & Netherlands) cranes have already headed south. Other birds also just now starting to "V" up and now following them.

We could be in for a very short Fall and early Winter.

I noticed the hummingbirds are staying around longer here in western Pa. than usual.
Normally gone by the middle of August but still here yesterday.

Maybe we are going to have a late fall.

Seeing an increase in Hummingbirds here on our SoCal mountains lately and they are hitting our feeders pretty hard. They were late arriving this spring. Blue Jays and Woodpeckers have been in crazy numbers all summer long. However, Chipmunk and Squirrel numbers are really down in our immediate area, but that could be due to little or no acorns last fall and that late heavy snow storm that we got ths first part of March.

No idea what that all means, just an observation.

ISn't it a mite early for this?
In Washington state.
It is CONSTANT flights now, not hardly a break between them.

There are many threads and comments about this going back a long time, and a lot of comments were made about this same time or even earlier in August.

On Sand Mountain Alabama the Tulip Poplar trees kept their leaves though August, which is unusual. Normally they are the first to drop at low elevation due to lack of rain and heat. This year it looks like they'll keep them till Autumn.

Had 32 Geese fly over, lots of Ducks. Crows have been gathering and song birds leaving. Our Barn Swallows had an unusually bad breeding season. Many of the hatchlings fell out of the nests, way too many. One pair were never successful.

My silver leaf maples are about half orange and falling. This is unusual as it's usually the poplar and sweetgum trees that start to change first.

Woolybogers are everywhere hanging off limbs in clusters! I've never seen that before. Usually you see them on the ground a few at a time. This year they are munching leaves in hanging clusters of at least 25 caterpillars per.

I know it's just caterpillars but damn it! It's freaky looking and nightmare sauce!

I'm blaming any color I'm seeing so far on drought stress. (N MN). Did spy a couple of bright red sumac bushes on south facing hills this morning, but again, d-r-y.

Haven't noticed a lot of changed bird and wild critter activity yet. For gosh sakes, it's going to be in the 90's again next week. Bear season starts today, and those boys better hustle to get their bears skinned and cooled down real quick if they want any edible meat from them.

Many of the weather forecasters on YouTube are predicting this winter is going to be warm and I think their forecasts are going to change by mid September. I have my firewood ready just need to move it to the house I usually do this starting in October but starting with the beginning of August something in me is urging me to do it sooner, why is that?

Day by day
As hot as it has been here, most of the black-bellied whistling ducks have left our area and headed south...it's too early for that.

And, despite the gosh awful drought, our wild persimmon trees are full of persimmons...usually means a rough winter.

That was my aunt's position. She had to move out of her house and into my old one. Better than 10-room farmhouse, crammed full of stuff. Bit of a hoarder. She still ended up leaving a lot of stuff behind for the new owners, which was a surprise. God alone knows what they profited by that move. Packed up multiple boxes, multiple truckloads, even multiple rented shipping containers. Now she's in a two-bedroom one-bath house with garage and breezeway. She has to park her car outside; that's how much stuff she has.
