"No one really wants this job, but millions of households may need their own Thanksgiving bouncer. The cover charge is a negative COVID test, done ahead of arrival or outside the front door.
Why it matters: Normalizing rapid tests is a practical way to help extended families feel a little more normal around the holiday dinner table.
  • You may have relatives who aren't vaccinated (or won't say) — or babies or immunocompromised guests who are vulnerable to breakthrough infections.
How it works: If you're hosting, let your guests know ahead of their arrival that you'll be testing everyone at the door for their own safety. If you're a guest who's anxious about attending without testing, talk to your host now about their plans and how you can help.
  • Depending on your budget, you might offer to pick up the tab for everyone's tests, or hosts might ask guests to pay for their own.
  • At-home antigen tests cost around $25 for a box of two.
  • Alternatively, guests who have gotten a PCR test within a couple of days prior could bring evidence of their negative results. PCR rapid tests can be obtained same-day but are generally much more expensive.
The other side: Rapid antigen tests overall aren't quite as accurate as PCR tests. In theory, a false positive could leave guests out in the cold (or quarantined in a bedroom) while a false negative could give an undue sense of security.
  • But false results aren't common, Gigi Gronvall, an immunologist by training and is a senior scholar at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told Axios. "If you perform the test correctly, you should feel confident if it's a positive, it's a real positive."
  • Since the rapid antigen tests are less sensitive than PCR tests, a negative result might simply indicate a person doesn't have enough replicated virus to test positive yet.
  • "If you are negative, you can draw some comfort in that but it doesn't mean you'll always be negative. You just might be below the threshold. But you also might not, at that moment, be as much of a danger to somebody else either," Gronvall said.
  • One extra precaution may be to purchase enough tests for a re-test, or to ask guests to test on their own before and then again when they arrive for the meal.
But, but, but: "If you are symptomatic, if you have been exposed to somebody with [COVID], I would recommend that you get the gold standard PCR test," Leana Wen, an emergency physician and public health professor at George Washington University, told Axios.
  • "But if you don't have any symptoms and you're using this test to find out, 'Should I hang out with this group of people today or not?', the rapid antigen test is very good for that kind of screening purpose."
Between the lines: Beyond requiring tests for entry, there are other tweaks that can help make Thanksgiving a bit safer.
  • Opening windows to improve air circulation only goes so far because people want to be comfortable, Gronvall said.
  • Those with electronic thermostats can improve airflow by setting their fan to "on" versus "auto" and replacing air filters on their heating systems with MERV Rating 13 filters.
  • People can also purchase portable HEPA air filtration devices at hardware stores or national retailers or create their own filtration devices using a box fan, Gronvall said.
The bottom line: Enforcing testing rules at your holiday gathering can reduce the chances of COVID spread. But there's no way to eliminate the risk when people are gathering.
  • "Tests are a moment in time, and no test is going to give perfect visibility into whether or not you're infectious," Gronvall said."

CBS guest suggests Thanksgiving 'hors d'oeuvres in the garage' while waiting for COVID rapid test results
Multiple news outlets have offered unpopular takes on COVID concerns this holiday season
By Cortney O'Brien | Fox News

Media top headlines November 24
"In media news today, a CBS News reporter asks Biden when he will answer reporters' questions, 'Experts' get slammed for cautioning against using the term 'looting' to describe California thefts, and false media reporting on Rittenhouse leads to corrections and mockery.

A CBS guest suggested in a Thanksgiving segment Wednesday that Americans should consider having appetizers in the garage until all guests get their rapid COVID-19 test results back.
Psychologist Lisa Tamour suggested the way Turkey Day hosts could make the tricky situation "fun" on "CBS Mornings."
"If the situation feels weird, maybe make it kind of fun," Tamour said. "And say we're going to start with hors d'oeuvres in the garage, you know we'll have drinks, we'll do our rapid tests and then come on in, right?"

"You can make it playful, make it fun, and then be able to enjoy the holiday because you're not worried about safety," she added.

AXIOS PANNED FOR SUGGESTING ‘THANKSGIVING BOUNCERS’ TO ADMINISTER COVID TESTS AHEAD OF HOLIDAY GATHERING
Her suggestion cracked up the co-hosts, but left conservatives weary of COVID measures less than amused.

""How does one make a garage covid test ‘fun’ and ‘playful,’" echoed Sen. Josh Hawley's, R-Mo., press secretary Abigail Marone.

8 TIMES LIBERAL MEDIA TRIED TO RUIN THANKSGIVING, FROM DITCHING TURKEY TO DECLARING ‘GENOCIDE’ REMAINS ON THE MENU

Fox News contributor Tammy Bruce weighed in, saying opinions like Tamour's will keep Americans in a constant state of fear.
"All this does is reinforce the idea that you should be afraid to even be with your own family. In your own home," Bruce said. "This is insane. Yes it’s cult-like but it really has many more features of mass hysteria.""

Rapid antigen tests overall aren't quite as accurate as PCR tests

So, the RA tests have even worse accuracy than the 92% false positive rate the PCRs had for quite a while?

I know you are anti vax, but do you have to spread lies.

I have posted with references before, PCR test have a 4% False positive rate and a 30% false negative rate.
I am well aware that what people call a false positive test on this board is a PCR test with a high amplification rate, above 35. It is still a positive test. End of story.

Few people test, and the tests give high false negative rates, so Covid is massively under reported.

So when a test either PCR, or lateral flow, which has an even higher false negative rate, give a positive result, then Covid is present.

Our simple classification of positive / negative result is the problem. We need a 3rd category - positive, but unlikely to be infectious. And that group needs to be tested again and again, to see if their viral load goes up, in which case they should isolate, or not, in which case they are free to go about their daily lives. Calling the 3rd category false positive, is sloppy thinking. Typical of journalists. Well maybe that is a bit harsh. They are probably trying to simplify this incredible complex subject, for their readers. A journalist writes for someone who is 12.

Think of a positive test after 35/40 cycles, as like hearing the outcome of a court case. Has the prosecution secured a conviction or not? The person who walks free from court after a not guilty verdict, could be as innocent as the purest of white snow, or guilty as charge; or anything in between. We don’t know. We just know they were not found guilty. Similarly a positive test after 35/40 cycles, could indicate someone who is not infectious; or someone who is incubating the disease, and will become a super spreader in 2 days’ time; or anything in between. Essentially what all the journalists are saying, and inaccurately calling false positive, is that anyone who gets a positive test after 35/ 40 cycles is not likely to spread the disease. That is equivalent to saying that every person found not guilty and walks free from court is as innocent as a new born baby.

A PCR test is mere a snapshot in time. What would be better is to run 3 PCR tests over 12 hours, to see if their viral load is increasing or not. Should they self-isolate, or not. Given the impracticality of that suggestion, society has gone for the simple option, positive test - self-isolate.

Before vaccination was available to all, a few months back – the NHS was treating approximately 1000 covid patients. 2/3rds were unvaxed. 1/3 had had one dose and just 2 were fully vaccinated. If everyone had been vaccinated, then there would have been around 10 Covid patients in hospital.

So the Covid vaccine, in terms of the virus, lowers your age by around 30 years. As the youngest patient, without health problems, I know of who has died, was 5 years old, anyone over 35 years of age, can still risk dying. But then they would have died of the virus anyway. And 80 year old, in terms of Coved turns into a 50 year old, who still has quite a high chance of dying.

And the youngest person who has long covid - is a new born baby, so you can become disabled at any age.

What is upsetting, cancer specialists, heart doctors etc. is discovering that all the all ICU beds are taken up by the unvaxed. They want to operate, but can’t, so they watch their sickest patients die before they can help them.

Call someone out for spreading lies, then add paragraphs of mistruth. No credibility.

The tests are fatally flawed, the jab is not a vaccine and unless you are in a very small demographic you’d be worse off catching the flu. By the way, where is the flu?

The truth has been available for some time now. It is not just the unvaccinated filling icu beds, it includes an equal number of vaccinated patients. But except in a few locations the hospitals are not filled. I have family members throughout the country that work nursing and phlebotomy in many hospitals, they don’t see your version of the truth every day.

The data does not support that claim from the most highly vaccinated countries. Good luck with that though. I hope everyone has a nice holiday, with or without Covistan Cultists… :kaid:

I just think my and mine private medical records is private. Just like yours.

Rather your vaxxed or not, that's your business!

If you feel sick stay home.

It's really that simple.

This is all PC BS!

The China virus I know is not BS, but I think it's a double edge sword. One side can kills you, and the other makes divisions. About equally bad.

post 103. On False positive / negative rates.

So please post the reference that says there is a 92% false positive rate for PCR tests. Other wise I am forced to conclude MinnesotaSmith spreads false information.

Believe what you want, it is your right. Just don’t be upset when people believe different and spread information contrary to what they consider to be your flawed thinking. There is far too much reliable information out there to dispute the “official” story.

Hopefully you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

I know this to be false and tire of people to be repeating it. Visit your local hospital and find out for yourself. I am a retired RN and have close ties with working nurses who dispute this type of comment.

I went to a large dinner last night with 14 family and close friends, of them 7 have been jabbed. With that said, 13 of them have had COVID including myself. None of the jabbed got it until after jabbing. The one jabbed person who did not get it yet was on an isolated military base overseas and just returned.

It has been said that the official story is that there is a 92% false positive rate for PCR tests. So please produce your references.

I have always stood up for voluntary vaccination. Please produce one of my posts where I did not. I have think everyone is entitled to their beliefs EXCEPT when those beliefs result in actions that hurt others. Flying planes into buildings being an example.

What I object to is someone stating there is a 92% false positive rate for PCR tests. I want to know what the science is behind this. I want to learn. I want you to teach me. But people refuse point blank to produce their sources. I generally have to do the work.

In the past, after a significant amount of work, I have found people talked rubbish, eg: - that covid can be mistaken for flu it can't. That the PCR test is being withdrawn as it is inaccurate, false story. It is being withdrawn, as newer tests require only one swab to test for multiple viruses, and so is less stressful for patients. etc. etc. etc.

You can believe what you want. Have the vaccine or not. But don't spread false information like there is a 92% false positive rate for PCR tests. Please produce your sources.

You made a statement and then you said the exact opposite. You were quoting another post, but you made it as difficult as possible for someone to realize that. If you don't want to use the normal quote syntax (as I have done here), for pity's sake at least do SOMETHING to distinguish the quoted material. Boldface, italic, red, ANYTHING. tia

I only wanted the last paragraph. I tried to bold it but they did not work either. Sorry to be confusing but comments like that really piss me off.

Fixed it

How about people have the good sense to call and cancel if they're sick. My dd's family are all sick so are staying home even though its not Covid.

Wow
The op was about the insanity and division occurring in families

And lo and behold

Insanity and division even amongst this group and us

Mock the covid zealots in the original post than turn on each other here over differing opinions.

Was listening to radio news this morning talk about Covid cases yet again, and the health department issues a statement. They apparently know that everyone is "fatigued" with listening to Covid news, but apparently they're not going to stop talking about it because it's for our own good.

I'm quite tired of government agencies making that decision. A lot of other people seem to agree from what I've seen so far.
