The Shallow Grave

The Shallow Grave

Lay me in a shallow grave
Grass above, the wind doth wave
No time left for me to save--
Never more an earthly slave

Look on me and you will see
In my eyes, eternity
All these days of work and pain
Fallen like a gentle rain

Death came calling without warning
Death found me alone this morning
All my earthly plans and schemes
Proved to be such fruitless dreams

Do not look on me and grieve
It’s time to go, I’m glad to leave
Leaving death now stranded here
The sky above is fresh and clear

SITTING IN THE FRESNO HILTON

Through a wall of glass
I see a tree branch move
In the wind. I see a flag
Also moving in the breeze.

Sitting above thirty feet of concrete
Steel and wood. Unreality.
Nature is beyond the glass
Seemingly out of my grasp.

Through the walls of work and life
I see my mind move
In freedom. I hear the wind
Of unfamiliar thoughts moving

Just beneath consciousness and words
Sitting above thirty feet of regulations
Tradition and obligations. Unreality.
Life beyond these – is it possible?

Life, seemingly out of my grasp…

Don't encourage me.... ;)

SOMEWHERE UNDER THE SUN

Cold house, empty house, waiting there
Every room has a story, but they just sit and stare
Dust and cobwebs fill the space where you once were
And I think of another time, when you were living there

Somewhere under the sun, you began your day
Somewhere under the sun, I began to pray
For your care…

Now I’m thinking back on the time, the times we knew
All the memories in my mind, they seem so few
Distant music fills my head, laughter from the past
Quickly brings a smile to my face, but it does not last

Somewhere under the stars, you lay down your head
Somewhere under the stars, I felt surely led
To pray for your care, to pray for your care
To pray, dear Lord, keep her safe in your care…

SOME THINGS ARE LOST

Some things are lost and never found
Others turn up--
Seasons later, unexpectedly
Untarnished through the years,
Or sometimes changed by time

The world shows no mercy
Time takes no prisoners
Trapped by tough choices
Tears are the companion of the traveler
Life offers no permanent rest

Some things are lost and never found
Other things are one day recovered
Or reborn, as the dawn of a new day
Other things blow away like ashes
Or just die, and fade away…

Good stuff, Mountain Mike!

Powerful words, Mike.

I love the strength and imagery of "Somewhere Under the Sun."

Keep it up! Write more! :)

Lady of the Shadows

Keeping busy in the day
Unaware in the night
Never is the world aware
Of my inner plight
Lying on the outside
Turmoil churns within
Lead me on the narrow road
Far away from sin

Loneliness creeps over me
Like shadows in the night
Cutting to the hollow core
Depriving me of sight
Hopeless empty feeling
All too lingering and familiar
Empty years of loneliness
Endless shower of tears

Lady of the shadows
Sing to me sweetly in the darkness
Place your hand in mine
Lay your head on my chest
Tell me that all is not lost
That you intend to linger
Think not of this weary world
If only for this vanishing moment

Thanks Tessa,

It's gray and rainy here, and I must be in a morose mood...

EVERYONE IS HAPPY

He shuts the door and turns to go
He never lets his feelings show
He walks alone into the street
Numbly knowing he’ll never meet
Another one in the world…such as she.

She vaguely watches him depart
Feeling sadness in her heart
Yet content that a phase is done
The old life past, a new begun--
Her heart diminishes…with his shadow.

On spring days she would see wildflowers
Mountain trees and windy showers
He in autumn would behold
The sky, on misty nights and cold
When stars fall… into darkness.

He shuts the door and turns to go
He never lets his feelings show
She vaguely watches him depart
Her heart diminishes with his shadow
Everyone is happy.
