I just came across the best article on the benifits of essential acids. I have reccomended all by clients stay on essential acids for many reasons.
Break down of fats
Arthritis-reduces inflammation
Diseases that cause dry skin and itching like psoriasis.
Facial break-outs
Boils
Fat reduction in the blood and more.
Here is a wonderful article that explaines the benifits better than I can.

Inflammation is an effective method of ensuring that invaders do not enter the body and create hovoc but when it becomes low grade and chronic, the immune system's army stays revved up and damage to healthy tissues can occur in the crossfire. Scientists are realizing that this life saving processdesigned to ward off bacteria, viruses and parasites is the creator of disease when left unchecked.
Stress, viruses, bacteria, parasites, environmental poisons, sugar, certain foods, smoking, high blood insulin levels and ovesity are just a few of the mediators of inflammation. The fact that we are living a lot longer than our ancestors also may be constiruting to inflammation as the aged often have a weakened avility to shut off the inflammatory process.
Fat and inflammation
With over 50% of the North Americans overweight and an addition 15% OR MORE WE WILL A TREMEDNOUS INCREASE IN INFLAMMATORY DISEASES.
This article goes into much depth about the prostaglandins that cause pain. I skipped the Pro-inflammatroy immune messengers and anti-inflammatory creams to jump forward to the heart of this article.
How EFA works which is a combination of basic essential fatty acids. Fatty acids from Borage, Flax, Black currant and Primrose are better than fish oils but are good to add with your regime as they provide many vital beneficial effects for the immune and inflammatory responses of the body. Variouus fatty acids induce changes in cell memnbranes and the responsiveness of the menbrane to certain immune factors. They also play a role in supressing inflammatroy cell fuctions, decreasing cartilage breakdown, trigering of cell death and , like NSAIDS, reducing the inflammatory activities of the COX-2 enzyme.
The esterfied (meaning it is stable and does not react with oxygen) fatty acids have pronounced anti-inflammatory effects, such as inhibiting the endothelial cells (thin cells that line the inside of some body cavities) and decreasing the pro-inflammatory effects of other fatty acids. The special fatty acids found in seeds have also been shown to reduce the production of the negative immune factor IL-6 and to control other immune factors responsible for inflammation. Some of these factors are reduction of pain in joints affected by osteoarthritis. And essential fatty acids may also play a role in preventing further tissue and joint damage. Why? They keep bone and connective tissues moist and more elastic and pliable.
Essential fatty acids also inhibit arachidonic acid, one of the main promoters of the inflammatory cascade of immune factors by inhibiting 5-lipoxygenase, another mediator of inflammation.
From Suzanne: Arachidonic acid is found in meat animals. In the past food animals used to be fed natural diets. Now with the grain feeding and estorgens for higher fat content (this happens with farm raised fish also) it reduces the natural fatty acids we used to get from these animals. Now we are devoid of many good essential fatty acids due to this commercial diet. We have enzymes to break down fatty acids but our bodies do not make EFA', we have to consume them daily. Nuts and seeds contain EFA's if natuals and not heated. When roasted the EFA'S are null and void.
Another tip from Suzanne. When purchasing EFA'S. Never buy heat processed essential fatty acids or chemically extracted either. They will be around 27.00 for a good 30 day supply. Look for gel caps in a dark colored bottle. Make sure they are fresh...look at the sell date or manufacture date.
Other problems that essentail fatty acids help.
Diabetics-breaks down fats in blood and utilizes insulin
Dogs- dry skin, digging and scratching to the point of bleeding if no fleas or contact dermatitis is present.
Thyroid disease- comes with constant skin dryness. Just one annoying symptom of the disease. Brings moisture back to the skin, nails and hair. Reduces the itching from increased histamines that also are part of thyroid disease. We be very itchy people indeed.
Stress- reduces nervous tention of stress.
The above problems are from my experience.

Inflammation is now thought to play a role in dozens of conditions from allergy, Alzheimer's, heart disease, arthritis, asthma, gingivitis, autoimmune disorders like lupus and more. Inflammation is the immune system's first reaction against infection. When you get a thorn in your finger, the thorn cuts through the skin, damaging tissue and allowing invaters, often bacteria, into the area.
The immune system responds by releasing histamine and sending out immune messengers known as cytokines, alerting the body that there is a problem. Macrophages (meaning large eating cells) engulf any bacteria that may be present while cleaning up damaged cells.
The area is often red, hot and swollen. Heat is produced as a result of increased blood flow to the skin in order to destroy invaders. Redness occurs due to to the ensuing battle and repair processes taht are underway. The area often becomes swollen because of all the fluid and immune cells in the area. Pain often the first indicator of inflammation; it makes you take notice and also stop moving the area to prevent further injury.
