ECON The Era of One-Stop Grocery Shopping Is Over

Neither here nor there.
I'm with you on that, packy. We've had that thrown in our faces a few times, too. I was shopping in a clothing store one day, and the sales lady was pushing me to buy more than I was shopping for. It was a high end store, too. I told her I wasn't interested in anything else. She smarted off about me being rich, so I could afford it. That made me so mad. I never went back to that clothing store. Most of my clothing comes from Blair, now.

Like you and OC, we've sacrificed a lot over the years to be where we are today. Still, we live a very modest lifestyle. It still pays to diversify our assets. The scam a few months ago wiped us almost out of one of our savings accounts (The scammers were gracious enough to leave us $800 in the account. It was almost laughable considering how much they took.), but with our assets not being all in one place. We didn't lose everything.
Scam?

The bank isn't working with you? Sorry this happened to you.

Yes, they were a huge help. We had our own case worker, and she was great. Our bank was on top of it, or the scammers could have wiped us clean from all our different accounts. They chose to hit our smallest savings account. That was a good thing, if there was any good in it.

You know it's kind of odd -- I stayed home with the kids for about 14 years, and with one income, we were BROKE. It was a real struggle. No, we didn't get EBT or anything like that. But I did learn a lot of strategies for living well with less. And now that the kids have grown and moved out and I'm making a full-time income (albeit not a big one) we have more money now than we ever have. At a time when everyone around is struggling. If this economy had happened back in those days, we would be in serious trouble. But, should I feel guilty about having money (and enjoying it) now when so many others are broke like we were? I don't think so. We paid our dues.

Of course, I am stashing away as much as possible too! Old habits die hard. I still buy my clothes at thrift shops. :)

Never feel guilty when you have worked and sacrificed to get to a better place. If others choose not to then that is on them.

Our shopping trip to Fareway on Saturday cost us $277! All basics: green beans, broccoli, avocados, bacon, and 14 pounds of beef rump roast that was on sale for $3.88 a pound to can up for future meals, again nothing name brand, my splurge was a cantaloup.
We spent over a hundred dollars at Sam's Club, all basics... TP, PT, avocado oil, coffee, etc., my splurge was a rotisserie chicken!
And finally $68 at Aldi... again only basics, like sugar, half and half, milk, eggs, a loaf of bread, and his splurge was the black label vanilla ice cream.
He went back later and purchased 10 more pounds of rump roast to can up, it does make really quick meals and we haven't seen it that price in a long while, typically the sale price is $5.99 a pound.
Oh MY!

We take a trip to Costco in February to do our stock up. We have a credit card associated with them, that pays us for the entire year's worth of perks in February, and that's when I load up. Sometimes, we buy a rotisserie chicken for our after-shop linner...much cheaper than going out and we will have leftovers, with the added benefit of not having to make something.

I am so (affectionately) envious of $3.88 a pound. We don't have the energy to process a lot of things at once, so we put some in the crock pot when we get home (first, to make barbacoa, and then bone broth), and then with each linner, we process the rest of that item. Sometimes I'll make four meals of something and freeze three. Y'all are so smart to go back and take advantage of that sale!!

I am interested to find that the city we will at some point move to, has three Aldis.I've only been to one once, and it was new and not large, so we will definitely be taking a look. There is also a Costco, much closer. We don't intend to live IN the city (I'm not sure I could do that any more), but it will still be closer.

I think I can...
My Sam's membership expires in August. Thinking of canceling and doing Costco instead, although it's farther away. Which do you think is better? I could do without either since it's only me and the hubby at home now, but I do like to stock up. Though it's not always much of a bargain to do so at Sam's!

If you have a gas station at Costco...figure out if just savings from gasoline alone pay for your membership costs...
I found that we can save more on gas than the membership costs..so we renew...
Everything thing else becomes a bonus...plus the price of their rotisserie chickens.. can't buy one that size for the price....
My cousin buys two each time she goes ..they eat one and she bones one and saves the meat in meal size packages in the freezer ...

Sam's and Costco both price their rotisserie chickens at $4.99 where as here locally Fareway and HyVee price them at $9.99. The savings in rotisserie chickens alone is worth the membership! Then of course there's the price of gas and other perks.

We don't have a Sam's near us..so I don't know about them..but the size of Costco's chicken is unreal....
If I get we one we can get four meals for the two of us from one chicken...
We have both a Costco and a BJ's near us.
BJ's is like Costco but only here in a limited area...but we like some bulk things we can get there that Costco doesn't sell...so we have both..

Heavens to Murgatroyd!! I had $30 a week back in the late '80 with which to feed my family of four.

I went to every grocery store after shopping the ad flyers and clipping coupons.

Now we're regressing. I only have fur kids to feed now and ours get species appropriate grub.

I made an efficient circuit so I wouldn't waste gas.
