test for elderberry extract

I'm about to find out how good elderberry works. My son was diagnosed with bronchitis a couple days ago. He went on a coughing jag tonight and couldn't stop. He said the emergency room doctor prescribed two medicines, but he doesn't have the money to get them filled and I don't have it to lend to him right now. He was coughing so hard his face was beet red and he was doubled over holding his stomach. As soon as there was a break in the coughing I made him take an elderberry capsule. That was over an hour ago and I haven't heard him cough since. I'm going to leave a note to remind him to take one before he goes to work tomorrow, and see how he makes out by tomorrow night. It seems to have nipped a few bugs at the start for the rest of us, but this will be a better test. This is the first time we've ever used it, so I'm curious to see what all it can do. If it seems to do the trick, I'm going to order some more!

A while back I bought some elderberry capsules. Later I noticed on the label that they were made from elderberry LEAVES. I know they are probably not good, as it is the berries that are supposed to help, not the leaves. Right? Dinghy, I hope your son is well now!

I don't know what to tell you about your pills. Mine says elderberry flowers on the ingredient list. Whatever it is, there are 400 mg. and they seem to work. I never heard my son cough all night or this morning. I hollered down for him to take one before he left for work, so I hope he did. He refuses to stay home because he'll get a $100 bonus at the end of the year for not missing any work. Any way, I would still use your capsules. A lot of plants have uses for the leaves too, like blackberries. For diarehea you can either drink the juice from the berries or make tea from the leaves. Maybe it's the same with elderberries. It might just take more leaves to get the concentration that would come from the berries. Maybe somebody else out there can give us some info on it.

beetree, I just checked my 3 main herb reference books and not one mentions elderberry leaves. It's has been my understanding for years that it's the flowers and/or berries that are medicinally potent. If your bottle is unopened, take it back and exchange it for something else if you can.
