It will have to affect the climate; if not alone, in conjunction with all the other eruptions.

We can let the mods close whichever is the older thread, or just let both of them ride- it's the new normal to post on the same topic four or five places at the same time, unfortunately : (

I think it's partly a matter of we can't be everywhere at once. We do our best.

Indonesia volcano eruption leaves one dead and dozens injured as Mount Semeru sends ash cloud 50,000ft in the air
At least 41 people have suffered burn injuries in the Lumajang district of East Java, health officials said on Saturday.
The tallest volcano on the Indonesian island of Java has erupted, killing at least one person and sending huge clouds of ash into the air.

TV footage shows Mount Semeru in the Lumajang district of East Java spewing giant clouds of ash at around 7pm local time (12pm UK) on Saturday as villagers run for shelter.

A volcano monitoring body said the ash clouds had risen up to 50,000ft in the air, with witnesses claiming they had blacked out the sun in some places.

At least one person is reported to have died and 41 people have been left with burn injuries, health officials said.

Around 30 buildings and a bridge were destroyed in the eruption, which was accompanied by thunderstorms that hampered evacuation efforts.

Lumajang district head Thoriqul Haq told TVOne: "Thick columns of ash have turned several villages to darkness."

He added that a number of people had been moved to temporary shelters or nearby secure areas.

I didn't mean it as a comment re: moderation, it's just the way TB is several small cliques and special interests at this point
..as always, I am of the opinion mods do a phenomenal job at a thankless task and deserve ten times what we pay em. ; )

Yeah, it does seem like there are several cliques, but I see the forum being able to accommodate them as being our strength.
I have tried deliberately to make the Q thread a place where we can meander off on to any side path that catches our fancy. Can't do that on other threads.

Locals in the Indonesian province of East Java fled in terror after an eruption at Mount Semeru sent volcanic ash 40,000 feet into the air.

Video posted to Twitter shows residents screaming as the ash plume mushroomed behind them, blocking out the sun, according to some accounts on social media.

No casualties have been reported so far. Images from the stricken province show motorbikes and homes under deep shales of dust and mud.

“Thick columns of ash have turned several villages to darkness,” Thoriqul Haq, a local official, told TV One, Al-Jazeera reported.

Indonesia — a country of more than 270 million people — sits around the infamous “ring of fire” with more than 128 active volcanos dotted along a string of fault lines.

Once again. "Greta is going to be pissed!" How dare Indonesia foul the atmosphere like this? Something must be done! I know! Let's cut c02 emissions from the U.S. Never mind jyna and India.

Neither here nor there.
You and I were posting on the volcano at the same time, but mine is in the GSM thread. This is a major eruption with a lot of ash, it must be pretty high up there on the VEI scale and could very well impact the climate.

Couple this eruption with the other three that has happened in the past month, in the pacific ocean, and it will most certainly affect our weather!

Actually, given the effects it will likely have on the climate, I could see it in several places. I'm really glad so many people are reading it. This IS a big deal.

JAKARTADAILY.ID - The eruption of Mount Semeru in East Java on Saturday (4 December 2021) at 2:59 p.m. local time has caused disruption to critical infrastructure, ranging from power cuts and the collapse of the main bridge. As of Saturday night, 30,523 customers had power outages due to disturbances that caused 112 electrical substations to malfunction.

The State Electricity Company (Persero) or PLN stated that the areas affected by the electricity supply included Pronojiwo Village, Supit Urang Village, Taman Ayu Village, Tempursari Village, to the Village of Curah Kobokan. Until now, PLN has re-operated as many as 30 substations, so that electricity for 7,508 families is back on.

East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa revealed this in his official Instagram account @khofifah.ip which we quoted on Sunday (5 December 2021).

Khofifah said that the impact of the eruption of Mount Semeru was related to electricity, among others. According to the General Manager of PLN for the Java Bali Region, the electricity disruption occurred in the Tempeh UP3 Jember Customer Service Unit (ULP).

"The substations that cannot be restored are because they are in a restricted area, the officers have not been allowed to enter the location because the conditions are not safe," she said.

Furthermore, Khofifah said that in addition to electricity disturbances, the lava flood from Mount Semeru had also caused a bridge to the affected area, namely Pronojiwo still disconnected," she said.

Silver Geladak Perak Collapses

The broken bridge was named the Geladak Perak (Silver Deck) by the Lumajang residents. The location is in Sumberwuluh Village, Candipuro District. The bridge collapsed due to being hit by cold lava so that the foundation supporting it from below was not strong enough to withstand and collapsed.

The bridge is the only bridge connecting Pronojiwo and Candipuro sub-districts, or connecting Lumajang and Malang districts via Piket Nol. For this reason, people who will travel through this route are asked to turn back.

"There is no longer a route, passing kobokan is very risky, while our residents are directed to turn back," explained Head of the Lumajang Regency Transportation Service, Nugraha Yudha M.

The Lumajang Regency Transportation Service has alerted a number of personnel to direct vehicles that will cross the Picket Nol Line. He also appealed to the public not to use routes that were not recommended by the officers.

"Through the Kobokan Rainfall, it is very risky and dangerous, it is better to just take a detour," added Nugraha.(*)

Yeah, I can't imagine there wouldn't be an effect now that we've had so many.
..haven't seen any official VEI - am curious to see that info too.

Actually, given the effects it will likely have on the climate, I could see it in several places. I'm really glad so many people are reading it. This IS a big deal.
