Solar Question

If you were going with solar...would you get a freezer and a refrigerator or just a refrigerator/freezer combo?

Army Girl,

I'm not quite sure where you are coming from and how much you want to spend.

If you are into big bucks ($3,000), buy a Sunfrost refrigerator or freezer that can be run on 12 volts or 120 volts AC - your choice. They are the most efficient apppliances you can buy.

But what most people in the boondocks do is have a propane fridge/freezer.

The frige will be opened several times a day, so it is best to keep a seperate freezer. I would get a high-efficiency super-insulated chest type freezer for long-term storage or frozen foods. You can power them up every other day if you are not opening them a lot. That will cut down dramatically on overall power requirements for the freezer.

You will still need a combo freezer/frige for stuff like ice cubes and ice cream, frozen things you want readily available.

To further increase efficiency, you might consider a 12-volt appliances that do not suffer the losses from your solar system's AC inverter, making them far more power efficient. That may also allow you to get away with using a smaller, less expensive inverter.
