Soil Soil mixes

Happy New Year!
I am planning on mixing my own seed starting soil this year and was wondering what "receipes" you all use. Last year I simply used peat moss and potting soil from Home Depot. This year I'm thinking of adding Perlite or Vermiculite.
What all are you using?

If it's just for seed starting, then peat moss, perlite and vermiculite is what I use. I just mix it in a wheelbarrow (I need a lot!) until it looks about like the store bought stuff. I have tried adding compost in the past, but for me anyway, all that seemed to do was add in weed seeds!

This will be fluffy and very dry, so try to plan ahead and mix in a bit of water, stir, and let sit about 24 hours ahead of when you want to plant into it. If I don't pre-moisten it, it sometimes takes 48-72 hours for it to absorb water in the planting pots. If you only water from below, I've had it take up to a week for any moisture to reach the seeds.

Also pack it into the pots well - like you would with brown sugar in a measuring cup. Otherwise it will look full, and a week or so later, your pot might only be 1/2 full.

Thank you, I have a huge block of peat moss to use up, so I'll do this instead of buying seed starting soil this spring.

I use ProMix and have for years. I love that stuff. I usually mix ProMix, an organic potting soil and an organic compost. I buy one large bag every two years and that's what I start my seeds in. I've used the promix by itself and it works well but I found I get a sturdier root base with the added soil and compost. Just my 2 cents. :)
