So-called "FREE" antivirus software

Good Morning, All,

I seem to have an opportunity-to-learn[i.e. 'problem] with some so-called free AV software. Now, to be fair, it DID run and find AOL Trojans. However, when it came to the end of the 'run', it gave no option to delete or quarantine these boogers, :dhr::lkick: Instead, THEY don't trust you to make the right decision and want YOU to send them the log from their software. Then, they will tell you what to do.

Now, I think I know the difference between a 'trojan' and regular software if it's labeled such. I don't believe I've gotten so :ld: that that my brains have turned to goo just yet.

Can anyone recommend a good, FREE, antivirus that doesn't do this? I am medically disabled and live on a small disability check, so cost does play a factor.

Thanks in advance,

"Thanks", All. ;-)

Many thanks for the help.

I'm not exactly the brightest crayola in the box, LOL! But, that doesn't seem to matter. I'm 6' 9" tall, weigh 400 pounds of muscle, can bench press 800 pounds and am a consummate liar, LOL!

Now for the 'serious' side...... I do have a wicked:dvl1: sense of humor, as K0ok will attest too. I've been a ham operator for just over 30 years
and have been in electronics since 1958, when I was 12 years old. I'm into Skywarn and Part 90 (Public Safety) monitoring as well as short-wave, long-wave, & medium-wave stations. I experiment and build antennas from MW to UHF. I'm re-learning the code, because I'm disabled and have cognitive memory loss (Alzheimer's?) I'm going to be a liver transplant candidate, but not for at least 3 years.

I was married when I woke up this morning to the same beautiful Lady for nearly 39 years. I have an adult daughter, 37 and a 17 year old grandson at
boot camp, in the Reserves. He will start college in August of '11.

I am religious, but will only share my story, if you ask and I don't expect you to believe it, nor accept it as your own. I'm VERY political and opinionated, "watch out". I will listen to your side, but if it varies from mine, it's best we just agree to disagree and still be friends, LOL! LIFE'S to short to dance with UGLY women, personality-wise.

I'm a Christian FIRST, a Southerner SECOND, a Native America lover, THIRD, and an AMERICAN, LAST. Get Over it! I study the War of Northern Aggression to you Yankee's that's Y' alls, "Civil War" and it's NOT over yet.
I don't want any slaves, I want my States Rights! (Tea Party)

Yes, I am a retired Bounty Hunter, 32 years. I never had to get 'physical' with anyone, I just "talked-them-to-death", LOL! :dhr:

Well, now you know a little about me. If you can't stomach this, I'm sorry. The ONLY ONE I have to please is THE CREATOR.

UBUNTU LINUX or BUST, LOL!

Hi All! ;-)

Monty, is that a Barrett M4? MY kind of weapon, LOL! Picks 'em off at 2 miles away

Well, you may not know it, but I detest MICRO$HAFT. I've got the parts to put another computer together. ASUS P5 LD/2gigs of RAM, 80 gig HD, etc. I'm going to put Ubuntu Linux on it to use with my Icom 706 MkII-G to run PSK-63, BPSK, etc. on 30 and 10 meters.

For some months now, I've been getting this "pop-up" that says Internet Explorer has made some 'errors' and a "log" is being saved (lie) and it reboots. This goes on ALL day. Someone said it was a 'fault' in how WIN 2000 Pro Patch 2 was run. Some say it's a worm. All I know it's a pain-in-the-rear and I'm going somewhere there ARE no such things as viri, worms, trojans, malware, trashware, even underwear. .....LOL! J/K

Well, it's almost time for "Biggest Loser", no I'm not on the show, but I have lost from 310 pounds down to 230 and need to lose 30 more. :kaid:

That's a Barrett 82A1, semi-auto....think M107 is the military designation. That one is in my family but not mine. It is actually a Desert Storm I veteran, one of the first 100 Barrett sent over there. Lots of fun to shoot off-hand.

I'm typing from the latest Ubuntu right now, absolutely love it. My wife and kids not as much so they have Win 7 on the PC I built them with Win Security Essentials running. Win 7 isn't bad, I don't mind using it but Ubuntu is my first choice.

Welcome to the board!

BH32, I use ClamWin, open source and free, from http://www.clamwin.com/ . It will pick up trojans as well as viruses. Options to report only (you decide what to do) or quarantine. It won't automatically protect your system; you have to manually scan downloads. I like it.

I have been using the free Avast for home users for about 5 years now with zero problems. It works fine, is not bloatware and auto updates. It asks what you want to do with viri if you get them. In 5 years I think we may have gotten 2 or 3 viruses and those came off websites that one of us clicked on. Not thru emails. (my zonealarm "should" have stopped those)...

I still run Zone Alarm Pro but thinking I may ditch it for something else. It has gotten kinda pushy lately in some of what it does.

But try the Avast. It works great and it's freeeeeeee...

I tried running AVG on my computer which was apparently infected with a real bugger recently, and AVG froze up my whole computer and I had to run Windows repair to be able to bring my computer back up afterwards.

To be fair, nothing else was able to clean my problems either, and I ended up having to reformat. :(

I ran everything, including the Windows protection scan which found no problems on a quickscan but took file an error on full scan and stopped running. Ever other free and trial software that I tried all took similar file errors and then stopped running. (I tried each multiple times.)

Malwarebytes was not able to run initially, and I had to change the file name of the .exe to get it to run... after which it ran for about 30 minutes on a full scan and then took a file error like everything else.

Whatever it was... it was icky. One of my kids was using my computer without permission and on a "game site" (they said) and got an error saying that the computer was infected. Do you want to click here to scan? They panicked, fell for it, and apparently unknowingly loaded something heinous to my PC.

AVG just released a new version and after 100 years of using it, it wouldn't download onto my home computer. It ran for 1 1/2 hours and I finally started over, only to have it go into a loop again.

I can't even remove it because it doesn't show anymore on add/remove programs, although it does show on my desktop.

So, I downloaded avast instead.

On the other hand, AVG updated and continues to run on my work computer.

Both are XP.
