I was watching the John Wick movie 3. Good movie. I'm hearing the cat near the back door, chowing down on his food in the dish. Break in the movie, paused, stood up to stretch and ......

It was already was heading out the door, cause I disturbed it. My damn cat is sitting on my chair outside there watching the proceedings as the skunk hustles away.

You lucky he didn't 'drop a bomb' on you...

That's the one thing that really bothers me about those, 'doggy doors'...all the other critters that can also use it...

In general, if you don't scare the skunk, it'll leave the house without incident.

I swapped out the backdoor for a solid one when I moved in. There was a huge dog door there.
Given all the critters around here, I didn't want to take a chance.

I've had raccoons around quite a lot, but only ever saw a skunk once on my game cam I sometimes set up to see what's going on in the yard at nite. That was also a view of the south end of him as it was heading north. That fur is beautiful.

The fur is gorgeous. Saw a dead skunk in the street's gutter when leaving work, a bit if a breeze at the time and the long fur waved back and forth in the breeze. Black and white, shiny and clean looking. I'm thinking can't you make something out of that?

Have few here, but the were dispatched.
I have cats too, about six, the mother was a stray.
Now, they are semi tame, I can pick them up and kiss them on the head.

Pass it forward...
Our next-door neighbors asked us to feed their small dog while they were away on vacation. The evening of the day after they left, we heard the dog barking frantically. Raccoons had entered the house through the pet door and were attacking the dog. Oh, yes, those folks made a hobby of feeding the raccoons -- about 30 of them -- and would buy a large barrel of day-old bread every week or two for that purpose.

In another home, we would leave the back door ajar some afternoons for ventilation. . . until we noticed mice entering the house through the door in broad daylight.

Skunks supposedly make great pets and act like cats. Wouldn’t mind one or two around. They do great at eating all the little bugs and such. Right now that job is being handled by several possums who are hanging out around here

Never had a problem with the dog door, but this one has super-strong magnet closers, being designed and insulated for harsh conditions like Minnesota winters and Labrador Retrievers. I'd forgotten that it takes a little more time to get the pup to learn using the door, but as of now, (four months and 30 lbs.) she whacks it with her paw to break the magnet seal and bombs in and out that way.

Far as I can see, the likelihood of anything sneaking in is laughable. The dogs get to know the sound of that door opening to the point that if a strong wind happens to crack it even a smidge, they erupt into full-ballistic-invasion mode. Even in the middle of hard snoozing at night. Proven too many times, the difference between dogs and cats....

I had a pet skunk when I was a kid. I never believed in bringing wild critters into the domestic world, but as is almost always the case, his people wanted to get rid of him after he reached adulthood. He'd been de-scented and neutered, and was a very pleasant-tempered and fun creature. His situation only proved to me in stronger terms though, that wild needs to stay wild. A coyote pup passed to me (dumped on me) because his welcome also ran out - same story, same lesson.

We have a part time neighbor that's a retired IT guy as well as a city dweller. We live in the woods in a small mountain range. This guy calls me one night and asked what to do about skunk smell. As it turned out this novice to the woods found some skunks and proceeded to kill them with a shovel. He got sprayed big time. I had no idea what to do. Later I found out he rented a motel room and took a bath in bleach water.

I have lots of skunks. My GSD gets sprayed all the time. He cornered one under my Tundra once. It was forever before we got the smell off the truck. It was funny watching the faces of folks as they walked by the truck in parking lots.

Gotta admit-they are cute. The Animal side of me says "Leave it alone, heck, it may buddy up to you like a cat after some time-had a couple of Foxes do that in Florida. For Nice but Stupid reasons the Dad started feeding them, I ended up taking over cause it was draught, not a lot for them and I knew they'd be safe around the property. They could hear my Jeep from a mile away [[straight pipes-no muffler]] and Dad said they come out and sit on the dirt hill behind the house waiting for me to get there.

Anyhoo, they were friendly enough to not run and come close enough for me to see their scars.

Skunk?

Had a buddy with one [[De-scented]] but it was Mean.

Get friendly and it might be a great Anti-asshole critter to have around as long as it catches them trying to break in.

"Hey! Hey! That's MY food supply!" ~FWOOOOSHHHHH!!!!! :D

I have often thought about a skunk as a pet. They are quite docile.

But then I remember that though docile, they are still a wild animal.

There are skunks that are bred specifically to be pets, there's a breeder in Florida. These skunks come from a line that has been bred and raised by perfumers for the past several hundred years and they are very docile.
