ECON Sickout? Southwest Airlines Cancels 1,000 More Flights As Disruptions Increase

One has to feel some sympathy for Southwest. They're in a no-win situation. Like hospitals, they take government money under contract, so they're legally obliged to implement the vaccination mandate; but a large proportion of their staff appear to feel differently.

Which is EXACTLY why I have been saying that the corporations should be going to court to PROTECT their employees from the gov't mandates! They are the only ones that have the money to do it, and if they don't do it, they lose their employees and ultimately their businesses. I do not understand why companies don't do the pushing back against the mandates!

Greg Abbott Defies Joe Biden and Throws Southwest Airlines a Lifeline

By Bonchie | Oct 11, 2021 8:45 PM ET

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has made another move against nonsensical COVID policies. Today, he signed an executive order banning vaccine mandates by any entity in the state. This would hit corporations that have begun to follow federal guidelines to mandate vaccines for all their employees. And though an official rule from OSHA has yet to materialize as threatened, Abbott’s move is in direct defiance of Joe Biden.

View: https://twitter.com/disclosetv/status/1447699457047502854?s=20

This comes in the midst of a meltdown happening at Southwest Airlines over a coming vaccine mandate in November. Reports continue to indicate that employees of the Texas-based air carrier are using sick days in anticipation of being fired for not conforming to the mandate. That has left thousands of flights canceled over the last several days, and while Southwest Airlines has blamed weather and ATC issues, those “issues” have not affected any other airline. Clearly, the issue is internal.

Given that, perhaps this move by Abbott is actually a lifeline worked out via back channels? Southwest Airlines, which has already faced a lawsuit over the mandate, can now claim their hands are tied and lift the requirements. That gets air and maintenance crews back to work — while allowing the airline to somewhat save face for its terrible decision to follow Joe Biden’s lead.

We’ll have to wait and see how this shakes out. Southwest Airlines could decide to simply ignore the directive or to fight it in court, at which point their position would be clearly staked and the fight would escalate. They’d certainly pay a large consumer and employee price for such a move, but if they want to be that stupid, it’s their company. I doubt they go that route, though.

For Abbott’s part, Republican governors continue to lead the fight against COVID tyranny. Without them holding the line, who knows where we’d be as a nation. These mandates are ridiculous from a standpoint of liberty but are also completely unnecessary from a scientific standpoint. Everyone spreads COVID. There is no need to “protect” vaccinated employees from their unvaccinated counterparts via force.

Abbott’s order is already eliciting gnashing of teeth from the left, and that’s as good a sign as any that it was the right move.

DALLAS (AP) — Southwest Airlines canceled more than 350 flights Monday following a weekend of major disruptions that it blamed on bad weather and air traffic control issues. The pilots union accused the company of a botched response to what it said would have been a minor challenge for other airlines.
The third straight day of canceled and delayed flights left passengers stranded and steaming from California to the East Coast.

“You can’t really relax when you’re just sitting there waiting for your next flight to be canceled,” said Vanessa Wheeler, who was biding her time at the San Jose, California, airport. She said Southwest canceled six consecutive flights on her over three days before she eventually decided to book a flight home to Las Vegas with Delta Air Lines. She vowed to never fly Southwest again.

Monday’s cancellations amounted to 10% of Southwest’s schedule, and at least 1,400 other flights, or roughly 40%, were delayed, according to the FlightAware tracking service. Shares of Southwest Airlines Co. fell 4.2%.
The widespread disruptions began shortly after the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, representing 9,000 pilots, asked a federal court on Friday to block the airline’s order that all employees get vaccinated. The union argued that Southwest must negotiate over the issue because it could involve sick leave or disability if pilots have a reaction to the vaccine.
“We are not anti-vaccination at all, but our pilots are extremely worried about how their medicals are going to be handled” if they are unable to fly, union president Casey Murray told The Associated Press. Murray said pilots had not staged a sickout because of the vaccine mandate.

He instead blamed the chaos of the past few days on Southwest’s operation, which he said has become “brittle” and “cracks under the slightest pressure.” He said the airline uses antiquated crew-scheduling technology that leads to cascading disruptions when flights are canceled in one part of its network.
Unions at both Southwest and American have also argued that management has been too slow to bring pilots back from leaves of absence that the airlines persuaded them to take during the pandemic, leaving them short-handed.
In a video for employees, Southwest Chief Operating Officer Mike Van de Ven said that despite “a very aggressive hiring plan ... we are still not where we want to be with staffing,” especially pilots.

The staffing shortage is leading to fewer flights. After massive delays this summer, Southwest trimmed its fall schedule, which Van de Ven said had helped reduce delays in the past month. He said Southwest has already made significant cuts in its original schedules for November and December, “and if we think we need to do more, we will.”
There is a risk to fewer flights, however: It leaves Southwest with fewer options to accommodate stranded passengers.
Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration acknowledged delays in part of Florida on Friday but pushed back against Southwest’s air-traffic control explanation. The FAA said Sunday that “some airlines” were experiencing problems because of planes and crews being out of position. Southwest was the only airline to report such a large percentage of canceled and delayed flights over the weekend.
Southwest spokeswoman Brandy King said there was no evidence that would indicate the disruptions were caused by any sort of employee protest over vaccinations.

Some passengers were frustrated not just by flight delays but also the lack of a clear reason for them.
“My concern is we had no explanation really that was, I feel, very legitimate or believable,” said Brian Gesch of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, who was traveling through Reagan Washington National Airport with his wife. He doubted that weather and air traffic controllers were the real issue. “So we are frustrated and missing a day of work.”
Others were just concerned about getting home — any way they could.
Kent Moddelmog ended up driving 700 miles (1,127 kilometers) with his 14-year-old son from Phoenix to Dublin, California, after Southwest canceled their flight and he couldn’t find a flight on a competing airline that wasn’t exorbitantly priced. “I wasn’t going to drop $3,000 to get back,” Moddelmog said.

The sales director for a consulting company said he flies Southwest dozens of times a year but had “never been in a situation like that.”
Savanthi Syth, an airlines analyst for Raymond James, said the weekend problems will increase Southwest’s costs and worsen the company’s strained relations with unions.
Southwest has struggled all summer with high numbers of delayed and canceled flights. In August, it announced it was trimming its September schedule by 27 flights a day, or less than 1%, and 162 flights a day, or 4.5% of the schedule, from early October through Nov. 5.

The White House has pushed airlines to adopt vaccine mandates because they are federal contractors — they get paid by the Defense Department to operate flights, including those that carried Afghanistan refugees to the U.S. this summer.
United Airlines was the first major U.S. carrier to announce a vaccination requirement. Southwest had remained silent even after President Joe Biden announced his order for federal contractors and large employers. Finally last week, Southwest told employees they must be fully vaccinated by Dec. 8 to keep their jobs. Workers can ask to skip the shots for medical or religious reasons.

There is a particularly enraging irony in that Joe Biden’s federal DOJ and Dept of Labor do not enforce employment eligibility authorization for illegal aliens based on legal status, while at the same time the Biden Dept. of Labor is putting OSHA in charge of a federal policy that will enforce vaccination requirements. Go figure.
It's a no-brainer. Bringing in illegals and making it easy as pie for them results in VOTES.

If the Air Traffic Controllers, who are Federal employees, walked off the job, they may well be fired. It happened to one of DH's cousins back when they walked out during the Reagan Administration. We passed along a warning to the family that you can't strike against the Fed and would be fired, but I guess the cousin didn't believe it would happen. It did.

If they don't submit to the jab they will be fired .... what's the difference?

Is resistance to COVID-19 mandates reaching critical mass?

I wasn't in the least surprised to hear rumors - as yet unconfirmed by the Federal Aviation Administration, and ignored by the mainstream media so far, but confirmed to me by a friend who's an air traffic controller in a major center - that most of the controllers in the Jacksonville, Florida, air traffic center allegedly walked off the job on Friday in protest against the mandate to undergo the COVID-19 vaccination. A similar problem is reported to have occurred in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, although I've not been able to confirm that yet.

Southwest Airlines seems to be deep in the dwang over their vaccination mandate. Bloomberg reports:

Southwest Airlines Co. pilots asked a court to temporarily block the company from carrying out federally mandated coronavirus vaccinations until an existing lawsuit over alleged U.S. labor law violations is resolved.

The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association’s filing Friday also asked for an immediate hearing on the request before a federal court in Dallas, claiming the carrier has continued to take unilateral actions that violate terms of the Railway Labor Act, which governs airline-union relations. Those steps include the Covid-19 vaccination requirement.

“The new vaccine mandate unlawfully imposes new conditions of employment and the new policy threatens termination of any pilot not fully vaccinated by December 8, 2021,” the legal filing said. “Southwest Airlines’ additional new and unilateral modification of the parties’ collective bargaining agreement is in clear violation of the RLA.”

Southwest set the deadline on Oct. 4 under a federal vaccination mandate for employees of companies holding contracts with the U.S. government.

There's more at the link.

It appears the pilots there aren't restricting themselves to legal action. Southwest had to cancel up to 2,000 flights this past weekend, citing various reasons (including the ATC problems referred to above, weather, etc.) However, the weather in the cancellation area was reportedly good to excellent, so fliers who found their flights cancelled are not amused by that excuse. Instead, there are widespread reports (again, not in the mainstream media, which appears to be trying to cover up such news) that "large numbers of Southwest pilots are not showing up to work in protest over the vaccine mandate". Some sources claim that Southwest employees are using up all the sick time they've accumulated, in an attempt to put pressure on the airline.

Another report notes:

Essentially, the union cannot organize or even acknowledge the sickout, because doing so would make it an illegal job action. Years ago, Southwest and its pilots had a rough negotiation, and the union would not even let the pilots internally discuss the possibility of working-to-rule (which would have slowed Southwest to a crawl).

But at the moment the pilots don’t even have to talk to each other about what they’re doing. The anger internally - not just among pilots but other Southwest workers - is enormous. The tough prior negotiations notwithstanding, Southwest has a history of decent labor relations, and workers believe the company should stand up for them against the mandate. Telling pilots in particular to comply or face termination has backfired.

Again, more at the link, and in this report, which I highly recommend you read.

One has to feel some sympathy for Southwest. They're in a no-win situation. Like hospitals, they take government money under contract, so they're legally obliged to implement the vaccination mandate; but a large proportion of their staff appear to feel differently. (I don't blame the pilots, given a recent whistleblower warning that flight crew risk sudden and potentially fatal cardiac complications from the vaccine, perhaps even while in the air.) A disease like that means the automatic, immediate and probably permanent loss of flight medical status. Southwest pilots have reportedly complained that their disability insurance does not cover such issues, meaning that their careers might be destroyed almost overnight, with no compensation or guarantee of future income or medical treatment as a result. The vaccine manufacturers can't be sued for such expenses, because they have legal immunity against lawsuits or prosecution. In the pilots' shoes, I wouldn't be terribly happy about that either.

Needless to say, progressive left-wing pundits are anything but thrilled by such resistance. Here's just one over-the-top reaction from Twitter:

The author of the Palmer Report adds: "These loons are about to lose their jobs, and rightly so. But they shouldn’t ever be trusted in positions of security or influence again. I’ve said for years that right wing extremists can’t be trusted in positions of influence, due to their mental incompetence. They keep proving me right." Well, sucks to be him, I guess... I'm on the pilots' side.

I saw a rumor on Gab that "the ferry they use [in Seattle, WA] is now unreliable because of staff shortages due to the mandate". That's been confirmed by the mainstream media, although whether the shortage has been caused by actual illness among staff members, or by resistance to the mandate to be vaccinated, has not been made clear. The report simply cites "COVID-related staffing shortages".

Another friend who's a long-haul trucker (an owner/operator) told me over the weekend that "thousands" of drivers are now refusing to schedule loads to states that are imposing, or will soon impose, COVID vaccination mandates on transport workers (including some of the biggest states in the country, like New York and California). He says he's personally been "begged" by several customers who are "desperate" for drivers. He claims they've even offered him significant sums of money to get the jab so he can drive their cargoes; but he's having none of it, thanks to the widely-reported incidence of problems with the vaccines (well over 500,000 so far in the USA alone). He says it helps that the backlog of freight is so great that he can pick and choose which loads he carries, and which he rejects.

He also told me that many drivers for the big trucking companies are getting more and more adamant with their bosses that if they insist on vaccination, they're going to walk out, and go to work for companies in states that have greater respect for their right to choose. Given the current shortage of drivers (about a 60,000 shortfall since 2019 and rapidly getting worse, particularly in the light of current supply chain problems), he doesn't think they'll have much trouble finding work. Meanwhile, states that have imposed mandates for truck drivers to be vaccinated are said to be already finding incoming truck traffic dropping off significantly - to the distress of businesses there, which can't get their orders in on time or in sufficient quantity.

Many hospitals are complaining about staff shortages, but they're not admitting that a primary cause is the vaccination mandate. One nurse who's quit rather than take it has spilled the beans, and I've had that confirmed by a couple of local nurses who've also resigned rather than be vaccinated. It's said that hospitals across the country are being forced to close entire wards, or shut down the provision of certain medical services, because they can't get enough vaccinated staff to run them. (The hospitals have no choice but to impose the vaxx mandate, because if they don't, they won't be paid by Medicare or Medicaid.) By some estimates, approximately 20% of nursing jobs are currently vacant, with no takers - and it's getting worse.

On the other hand, nurses and doctors who've quit rather than be vaccinated are now being offered jobs in practices and institutions that don't take government money, and can therefore afford to be less doctrinaire and restrictive. To cite just one example, this advertisement has been appearing on Gab in recent days:

I know of several families in need of visiting nurse care who've made private arrangements with nurses who don't want to be vaccinated. They're working unofficially, without registering as home health care providers, and being paid in cash "under the table". Good for them, as far as I'm concerned! They charge lower rates, which saves the families money; but they actually make more money than they used to, because they don't face all the deductions that a hospital would take out of their pay. When medications or supplies are needed, they're bought outside the regular channels (which isn't hard to do in most cases - one can save quite a lot of money that way). Everybody's happy except the bureaucrats.

I've also been told, by a nurse at a major hospital in a very big city a couple of hours' drive from here, that there's quiet, unofficial collusion among the staff to avoid vaccination by accepting an injection of saline solution instead. The official vaccination card is filled in with what they should have received, but in reality they're walking out with a little salty water in their veins instead. In sheer desperation, some hospitals needing to hire travel nurses are said to be issuing them with (and registering with the authorities) brand-new COVID-19 "passports" that are completely fraudulent, not even going through the pretense of a saline injection. My informant told me that without such covert "work-arounds", her hospital would have had to shut down more than half of its departments.

More and more, I'm getting the feeling that there's a broad-based grass-roots groundswell of opposition building to the Biden administration's dogmatic, doctrinaire insistence on using the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse to impose rigid, authoritarian controls on society. I think it's beginning to backfire on them in more and more ways, and I think they're panicking. After all, without the excuse of COVID-19 to justify their autocratic shenanigans, their whole program falls apart. May it do so quickly! I suspect the ubiquitous public chants of "F*** Joe Biden!", and the hilarious meme of "Let's Go Brandon!" (which is now being merchandised, apparently by the truckload) are yet more evidence of widespread and growing public disdain for this administration and its progressive-left preoccupations.

I entirely approve of this meme that began circulating last week. Clickit to biggit.

Amen!

After I had posted wondering how the company was going to verify vaccine status, the memo came out that everyone will have to upload a copy of their vaccination card. It really sucks as I'm not in a financial position where I can throw 32 years away. Too close to retirement to throw it away, and too far to say heck with it and retire early. I unfortunately have to do what's best for my family. Hell, at least if the vax kills me, they'll be provided for very well with the various insurance policies I have.

My sister, who, by the way, voted for Biden, has bought an airline ticket to visit family in another state at the end of this month. Yesterday she told me she needed to keep an eye on the situation because all those flights were cancelled due to bad weather. I told her what was really going on - practically yelling. Yes, she got her "information" from the news on TV. *SIGH*

Others around me are adopting my philosophy regarding non-business travel: if we can't drive there, we aren't going.

My prayers continue to go out to those who fly as part of their commute to work. I think you're going to have to take some extra gear and plan on staying at your job site for awhile. I expect "sick-outs" to become more widespread.

BREAKING: During an interview with Stew Peters, Dr Jane Ruby provided Breaking information, corroborated by multiple sources, that a Vaxxed Delta Airlines pilot died in flight within the last two weeks, an emergency landing was forced, and the company is covering it up!

It was a disastrous weekend for Southwest Airlines. Across Saturday and Sunday, they canceled more than 2,100 flights, about a quarter of their total. Now here’s where it gets interesting: It’s extremely obvious someone is lying about why. In a statement, Southwest blamed bad weather and air traffic control problems. But the Federal Aviation Administration says, no, there haven’t been any air traffic control issues since last Friday. And if “Bad weather” was forcing cancellations, it was a peculiar kind of weather that only affected Southwest and its airplanes. Other airlines didn’t have mass cancellations. There was some rain and thunderstorms in Florida, but no hurricanes. Nothing that required a mass shutdown.

No, somebody is lying here. And it could be from both Southwest and the FAA. There are reports that in Jacksonville, Florida, air traffic controllers walked off the job to protest against vaccine mandates. But that might not be all. Southwest announced a vaccine mandate for all personnel last week, and there are reports that pilots are joining the resistance as well. But Southwest’s pilot’s union claims there is no such protest action underway; they say that “poor planning” by Southwest management caused the cancellations. So maybe the union is lying or clueless as well.

To unravel all of this, Dr. Jane Ruby joined the show to discuss.

Very.

When I was a courier, I shipped out hotshot hardware packages that were going to well known technology corporations; SW airlines was one of the main shippers we used.

If Delta gets in on this(the other big one), lots of monkey wrenches will develop overnight for equipment in disrepair.

And both airlines move a lot of critical freight.

Quote of the Day: Southwest Pilots "Sick-in" edition

This quote (and the post it is from) makes no mention of the pilots, and was written from the point of view of the working man. But it explains clearly what is going on (you'll have to read the whole thing to see how this applies to pilots as well):
I think that in retrospect, the decision to lock down entire societies to stop the coronavirus will end up in the history books as one of the most spectacular blunders ever committed by a ruling class. Partly, of course, the lockdowns didn’t work—look at graphs of case numbers over time from places that locked down vs. places that didn’t, and you’ll find that locking down societies and putting millions of people out of work didn’t do a thing to change the size and duration of the outbreak. Partly, the economic damage inflicted by the lockdowns would have taken years to heal even if the global industrial economy wasn’t already choking on excessive debt and running short of a galaxy of crucial raw materials. But there’s more to it than that.

If you want people to put up patiently with long hours of drudgery at miserably low wages, subject to wretched conditions and humiliating policies, so that their self-proclaimed betters can enjoy lifestyles they will never be able to share, it’s a really bad idea to make them stop work and give them a good long period of solitude, in which they can think about what they want out of life and how little of it they’re getting from the role you want them to play. It’s an especially bad idea to do it so that they have no way of knowing when, or if, they will ever be allowed to return to their former lives, thus forcing them to look for other options in order to stay fed, clothed, housed, and the like.

Like I said, no mention of the pilots. But when a corporation makes you merely one of the factors of production, you had damn well better be replaceable or they have a problem bigger than they think.

This is an outstanding post from The Blogger Formerly Known As The Archdruid. I cannot recommend this more highly. The Revolution will not be televised, but it sure as shootin' will be blogged.

The secret is NOT to refuse the jab and do not sign anything!

From a lawyer:

If you are being forced to Vax in order to keep your job, here’s a great way to handle it. (Conditional acceptance)

The secret is NOT to refuse it.

“I write with regard to the matter of potential covid vaccine and my desire to be fully informed and appraised of ALL facts before going ahead. I’d be most grateful if you could please provide the following information, in accordance with statutory legal requirements.”:

1. Can you please advise the approved legal status of any vaccine and if it is experimental?

2. Can you please provide details and assurances that the vaccine has been fully, independently and rigorously tested against control groups and the subsequent outcomes of those tests?

3. Can you please advise the entire list of contents of the vaccine I am to receive and if any are toxic to the body?

4. Can you please fully advise of all the adverse reactions associated with this vaccine since it’s introduction?

5. Can you please confirm that the vaccine you are advocating is NOT experimental mRNA gene altering therapy?

6. Can you please confirm that I will not be under any duress from yourselves as my employers, in compliance with the Nuremberg Code?

7. Can you please advise me of the likely risk of fatality, should I be unfortunate to contract Covid 19 and the likelihood of recovery?

8. Can you please advise me if I were to experience any adverse reactions is the manufacturer of the vaccine liable? If the manufacturer isn’t liable will the company I’m currently employed with with be responsible & liable as it is their request that I have the vaccine in order to carry on my employment?

Once I have received the above information in full and I am satisfied that there is NO threat to my health, I will be happy to accept your offer to receive the treatment, but with certain conditions – namely that:

1. You confirm in writing that I will suffer no harm.

2. Following acceptance of this, the offer must be signed by a fully qualified doctor who will take full legal and financial responsibility for any injuries occurring to myself, and/or from any interactions by authorized personnel regarding these procedures.

3. In the event that I should have to decline the offer of vaccination, please confirm that it will not compromise my position and that I will not suffer prejudice and discrimination as a result?

I would also advise that my inalienable rights are reserved.

The point is that if they CANNOT provide that information you’ve NOT refused.

Fly The Friendly Skies

It looks like this Southwest thing is taking off. According to PJMedia, this is a coordinated effort by pilots, attendants, gate agents, and other folks to protest vaccine mandates.

“They’re all going to look like fools soon,” said the insider. That would be nothing new for the fake news media. But it’s not just Southwest Airlines employees who have conscientious objections to mandates. According to the source, there are 22 airlines, along with truckers and other transportation employees represented in their ranks and more disruptions are to come. The employees are all joining FreedomFlyers.org, a website that was set up a few weeks ago to connect like-minded people and to fundraise for the effort of fighting against mandatory vaccines. They released a video that keeps being removed from social media but can be seen on their website.
The Freedom Flyers website is here, and there is more information at the link.

If, like me, you have been noticing shortages in the stores, one wonders if this is catching on?
Let Freedom ring!
