Anti-tank weapons like Javelins and whatever the UK is now flying to Ukraine aren't worth anything unless the force using them knows how to deploy them effectively against organized militaries. That takes doctrine, training, etc. Otherwise they are just more loot for the invader.

The Ukrainians produce some of the most advanced ATGMs around. This is a symbolic move in support for a state that develops, produces and globally sells arms to much of the rest of the world. Stugna-P is standard issue for UA army units, all trained in its use
If I'd criticise anything about the arms shipment discussions is the symbolic dimension that looks, like sanctions, largely like attempts to be seen to be doing something. Especially since UA builds its own stuff

Spot-on. The US and UK systems provide some niche advanced capabilities, but the act is far more political; and weak tea at that.

Ukraine has been using and training with the Javelin for several years. Russians are concerned about them as shown by the improvised "roof" armor they are installing.

So, he wants to nuke the Nevada desert and... affect the Australian economy? What did I miss here?

I don't think the US would stand for the Russians bombing even empty desert in North America. There definitely would be retaliation - maybe we would set off a device nearish to a large city (like they would have done to Las Vegas) in an area near the Urals. How about Perm?

Thats polite compared to what they deserve. Putin saw the weakness and is making his move. At this point there isnt much that will stop him. Even if we did move units in it looks like at this point the Germans are taking their ball and going home. We would have to bring them into Poland or up thru the Black Sea. Our prepo armor is in Germany and the Netherlands I believe. Dont imagine the Germans will let that move if we fly in troops.

If we did NOT prepo in Poland as well as Estonia and Lithuania (esp Estonia, with Ilves Toomas) over the past 12 years we are/were Dufi.

I had several Twitter discussions with Toomas Ilves of Estonia during the last several years of his presidency. He would have been (and was) a strong ally.

And, if I may add: German leadership knows that if they are viewed as a participant in mobilizing armor against Russia, the Russian’s would feel highly motivated to once and for all put an end to Germany, based on a long and very bloody history of German invasions. That right there would be the hairiest of hair triggers imbedded in this current face-off

There is one being built in Poland but it wont be ready and filled until 2023-2024.

The infrastructure that existed in the early 20th century for heating buildings doesn't exist now the same way it did then. Everyone is using electric or NG for heating, not burning coal in stoves located in their houses.

They have a few coal plants but I believe they all being phased out. IIRC Germany isnt as bad as the UK but all of Europe is getting rid of evil coal and switching to Russian natural gas.

Back then they had little kerosene or coal heaters and smaller demand for electricity run off coal. Now they are way too green for that. Heat, cook, electricity requires a solid flow of NG for their current infrastructure. Loss of access to an adequate or even survivable quantity of NG would be a disaster these days

Putin doesn't want NATO right on the border of Russia. We wouldn't want China on our northern or southern border either. What's going on over there isn't our concern. Maybe if the Europeans want to poke the bear, they should know for certain that they're on their own.

The biggest problem for us is that Joey 46 and his prancing pansies don't want to appear to be weak. This is not the time to look like a threat. One, Putin knows we aren't a threat. Two, we have NOTHING to gain by getting involved.

Getting involved in that pissing contest makes as much sense as getting involved in the Great War.

It was discussed extensively yesterday- first the guy quoted is a blow hard, bloviating, and will not be bombing anything-
but in his tirade he did mean the US state of Nevada due to the symbolism hitting a former nuclear testing site would provide, above and beyond the significance of being able to hit the US at all...

If they are trying to hurt Australia then it is the mining industry. Australia is big in mining In Nevada. From gold to lithium.
