I know what Putin is up to. He has dealt with NATO and the EU advancing to the Russian borders for THE LAST TWO DECADES. He has watched as NATO put FIRST STRIKE AEGIS SYSTEMS IN ROMANIA AND POLAND. He has watched as we moved to have Georgia join NATO. And now these ASSHAT Republican warmongers just said to FAST TRACK Ukraine's NATO membership.

PREPARE FOR WAR. PUTIN WILL STRKE AS HE IS CONVINCED BOTH THE EU AND NATO will launch on him from their new bases to be built in the Ukraine.

O really, you need to get the F #$%%% out of the Ukraine: IT IS GOING HOT.

U.S., U.K. Express Concern Over Russian Military Activity Near Ukraine
November 17, 2021 21:09 GMT
Russia held military exercises in Crimea in April.

Russia held military exercises in Crimea in April.

The United States and United Kingdom once again expressed concern about a large buildup of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine as concerns grow over the Kremlin’s endgame.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on November 17 that the Russian troop movements “certainly have our attention” and he urged Russia to be “more transparent” about its intentions.
Earlier in the day, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned a panel of senior lawmakers that it would be a “tragic mistake” for the Kremlin to undertake “military adventurism.”

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said earlier this month that up to 90,000 Russian troops remained near its border to the north, despite the end of military drills. That has raised concern over possible Russian aggression against Ukraine and prompted the U.K. to announce that it would be sending 600 troops to the country.
Meanwhile, the United States has stepped up naval visits to the Black Sea, sparking Kremlin anger.

Russia has a history of aggression toward Ukraine. The Kremlin forcibly annexed its Black Sea peninsula of Crimea in 2014 and backed separatists in two of its eastern provinces, triggering a conflict that continues to simmer to this day.
Separately, the United States and NATO member Turkey held a high-level defense group meeting at the Pentagon on November 16 to discuss a range of issues, including tensions in the Black Sea.
Turkey is one of three NATO members, along with Romania and Bulgaria, that borders the Black Sea.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov is expected in Washington later this week.

Poland is being more realistic than the U.S. regarding migrant invasion at their border. Like us, they are being INVADED by military age males who, at the very least, destabilize them economically and, at worst strain law enforcement and balloon crime. Poland is right to involve NATO as they are a conduit for further migrant invasion into other NATO countries.

The US is no less realistic, it's merely that national sovereignty and security is NOT the aim of the governing bodies. :bhd:

If the Russians do it, it will have to be soon

We're all hoping for after Thanksgiving. At least let me use my Thanksgiving stretch pants one last time. On a serious note though, yes. It is going to be very soon. The Russians simply cannot (and would not) invest this much treasure into such a mobilization. It is extremely expensive to move and encamp troops, and any political utility has long past. So if the sunk cost is not measured in political utility then what is it measured in.....?

MOSCOW, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Russia said on Wednesday it would deploy a new paratroop regiment on annexed Crimea by the beginning of December and complained about a British deal to boost Ukraine's navy which it said showed British military activities were expanding near its borders.

Russia's military said it would establish the new regiment on the peninsula Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, completing a reshuffle of forces touted by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in March, the Interfax news agency reported.

At the same time, Moscow voiced its objections to a framework agreement under which Ukraine will use British financing to enhance its naval capabilities, allowing it to buy missiles and build missile ships and a navy base on the Sea of Azov. read more

"We see this fact as the latest practical evidence of increasing British military activity in the states bordering Russia, in particular Ukraine," Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a weekly briefing.

Her comments added to a pattern of statements in recent weeks in which Russia has voiced increasingly vehement opposition to Western military support of any kind for Ukraine, let alone the possibility of it joining NATO.

Ukraine and NATO countries have expressed concern about Russian troop movements near Ukraine's borders, while Moscow in turn has accused Ukraine, the United States and their allies of destabilising behaviour, including in the Black Sea.

Ukraine's defence ministry said on Wednesday its armed forces had conducted drills near the borders of Crimea. read more

Commenting on the British-Ukrainian deal, the defence ministers of the two countries said on Wednesday: "Our governments have no desire to be adversarial, or seek in any way to strategically encircle or undermine the Russian Federation.

"We are concerned by Russia's military build-up and activity around the borders of Ukraine."

Russia has responded to such concerns by denying that it is threatening anyone, criticising "alarmist" news reports and affirming its right to deploy its troops as it likes on its own territory.

Biden May Up Ukraine Intelligence-Sharing

With some 100,000 Russian troops now massed on Ukraine's eastern border, the Biden administration is leaning toward providing Kyiv with battlefield intelligence, according to a former senior NATO official briefed by administration officials.
Such a move would represent a significant escalation in the military aid that the United States has provided to Ukraine so far and underscore President Joe Biden's determination to push back against Moscow's efforts to intimidate or reassert its control over the Western-leaning former Soviet republic.

"They are deeply, deeply, deeply concerned about what's happening," Ivo Daalder, who served as the U.S. ambassador to NATO during the Obama administration, said of the Biden administration officials who briefed him on the Russian buildup of forces on Ukraine's border. "Hints I'm getting from friends in the administration is that what we should really be doing is sharing battlefield intel, providing surveillance and reconnaissance, flying drones over [the Russian buildup] to really figure out what's going on."
Daalder said that, unlike a Russian troop buildup in the same region last spring, administration officials told him the current concentration of forces, as well as their night-time maneuvers and Moscow's claims of Ukrainian provocations, closely resemble Russia's military moves prior to its 2014 invasion and annexation of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula.
"There is a real worry that something really bad is afoot," Daalder, now president of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, told me.

Until now, Biden has maintained former President Donald Trump's policy of providing lethal military assistance to Kyiv. Over the past year, the United States has given Kyiv nearly $200 million in weapons, including short-range air defense systems, small arms, anti-tank weapons and naval patrol boats.
Douglas H. Wise, a former deputy director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, noted Trump's motivation in helping Ukraine was personal--to obligate Kyiv to dig up dirt on both Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, as a way of improving Trump's 2020 reelection prospects--while Biden's assistance stems from a deeper understanding of how to deal with Russia.

Toe to Toe
"Biden finally realized something no other president has since Kennedy, and that's the fact you can't shame, cajole, manipulate, influence or otherwise change Russian behavior except by confronting them when they are being dangerous," Wise told SpyTalk.
Under Obama, U.S. military assistance to Ukraine was restricted to non-lethal aid, such as blankets, field rations and first aid equipment, out of concern that any so-called "combat" assistance would upset the Russians and jeopardize their support for Obama's top foreign policy priority, the 2015 Iran nuclear accord.
"Every time we did something, the Russians would signal their displeasure," said Wise, who retired in 2016 as a senior CIA official after a 20-year Army career. "At one point we could not provide rations or boots/clothing because the word 'combat' was on the box, as in 'boots, combat, 1pr.'"

Providing battlefield intelligence would involve sharing images and analysis of the Russian military buildup from U.S. satellites and drones, giving the Ukrainians a clear picture of the Russian forces massing on their border and their posture.
Wise added, however, that it was likely the Russians would intercept such intelligence reports.
"The reality is we would have to provide that with a high confidence it would get to the Russians," he said. "That said, even if it went to the Russians fairly quickly, I&W [intelligence and warning] would still be useful to the Ukraine government."
The first intelligence reports of the Russian military buildup appeared at the beginning of November, revealing the movement of armored units from bases near Moscow to the Ukrainian border. The reports, based on sattelite images, prompted Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan to consult with NATO allies and other European partners.

Red Line
Around the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned of Ukrainian "attempts to carry out provocations. . . and drag Russia into some kind of combat." Earlier, Russian President Valdimir Putin had characterized U.S Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's visit to Ukraine in October as paving the way for the country to join NATO--a red line for the Kremlin. Austin dismissed the claim.
Earlier this month, CIA Director William Burns visited Moscow and told Putin the United States has "serious concerns" about the Russian troop buildup on the Ukrainian border. A few days later, Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Moscow against making a "serious mistake" in Ukraine.
In addition to the military assistance that the United States already provides Ukraine, NATO rotates four battalions of combat troops and armor to Poland and the Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuanian and Estonia.

More than a dozen Republican members of the House Armed Services Committee recently sent a letter to Biden, urging him to deploy U.S. troops to the Black Sea and supply Ukraine with a wider range of defensive weaponry, such as portable Stinger anti-aircraft missiles and Iron Dome air defense systems, along with battlefield intelligence.
Writing in The Hill, William Courtney, a former U.S. ambassador to several former Soviet Republics, said Russia's intentions in Ukraine remain unclear. "But the West will be watching," he said.

"while biden's assistance stems from a deeper undersanding of how to deal with Russia." :jstr:

Biden and his corrupt brat Hunter are common criminals and his ONLY goal is to cover up the massive corruption he engaged in. We may very well end up with a nuclear exchange to cover up his sleaze.

UKRAINE TO THE EU: PREPARE FOR WAR WITH RUSSIA
Mac Slavo
November 16th, 2021

Ukraine has told the European Union to prepare for a war with Russia. Kyiv’s foreign minister, Dmitry Kuleba sounded the alarm on Monday during a meeting with his Western counterparts, saying that the West would have to avoid being tied up in bureaucracy in the event of a conflict.

“If Russia starts acting, you simply won’t have time physically to coordinate, to go through all the bureaucratic procedures, to coordinate decisions,” he said. “So please do the preparatory work now, because if the military scenario happens, there will simply be no time,” he urged his French and German counterparts, Jean-Yves Le Drian and Heiko Maas.
On the same day, Ukraine’s State Border Service, however, rebuked claims that Moscow’s forces are amassing there. A spokesman for the organization told Ukraine-24 TV that it does not “register any movement of equipment or military of our neighboring country near the border.” According to him, if there is indeed any action occurring, “it may be dozens or even hundreds of kilometres from the state border.” –RT
China has also said that it is ready for “decisive measures” on Taiwan. Some people in Europe seem to underestimate the Chinese people’s aspiration for a reunification of our country,” he added, noting also that the bloc must lift its sanctions if a new Sino-EU investment deal is to be ratified. Speaking on Tuesday, China’s ambassador to the EU, Zhang Ming, said Beijing would never change its position on Taiwan.

War rhetoric is amplifying lately, and let’s not forget the migrant problems that could explode at any moment between Belarus and Poland.

War Alert: “Major Shooting Incident” Is Possible, Poland Warns

Hopefully, cooler heads prevail, but be ready for anything. War talk is all around right now and it’s only gotten more intense in the past few days. Never live in fear, just prepare and try to be ready for whatever they will toss our way at this point.

Serious question, as this is an area of the earth to which I only pay marginal attention, as a rule...

What is it about Soviet domination that the Ukrainians are so adamantly opposed ?

Holdomor - in the 1930s the Soviets starved approx 7 million Ukrainians to death. Basically to get the land for use by Russia for grain production. THere is a fascinating first hand account called Execution by Hunger by a man who survived. It is avail online in PDF format.

Also looking at history what about British rule did our forefathers so adamently oppose? They are being invaded.

Agreed.

How would we feel if Mexico wanted to take Texas back or the French Louisiana etc.

He is stuck on the fact that during WW2 Ukrainians fought for the Germans. So did French, Polish, Norwegian, Russian etc. For some it was ideology. For others like the Cossacks and I feel the Ukrainians it was about freeing their homelands from the Soviets.

For Doug, I seems that everything is the Ukrainians' and NATO's doing. The massive number of troops from Russia and Belarus on Ukraine's border, that's only natural, right?

It's unclear what Putin wants in today's speech at МИД. Abrogation of the statement at Bucharest 2008? An agreement not to deploy US forces in Ukraine? A cessation of weapon transfers to Ukraine? In comments he equally notes skepticism that such assurances have utility
Perhaps Burns’ visit dissuaded Moscow from a possible mil operation, though there’s no evidence in force posture to suggest this. On the contrary, Putin implies that the state of apprehension, resultant from Russian mil activity, will be useful for the foreseeable future.
Beyond a statement to the effect that he feels Russian warnings about red lines are now being taken more seriously, which may be what Burns’ visit & other exchanges accomplished, there is not much of a de-escalatory note in today’s comments.
