It's the only card they've got left at this point and the Russians are over playing it. By carrying on with "aid" to Ukraine, the West is replying to these threats by Russia without replying "in the clear".
At some point, something will give in a big way. It is only a matter of time.

Everybody’s opinion is Right, Wrong, or Indifferent. Mines is at this point we do not have a dog in this fight, Russia has a justifiable claim that NATO overstepped on the agreed upon arrangements. NATO has not come back with one thing that would make me disagree with what Russia has stated. As far as Chem. Labs, Money Laundering from the U.S. and NATO, I am starting to see a lot of that proof in the pudding. But if you want to hide your eyes, plug your ears, and put a cork in your mouth…. Prove me wrong

Okay then.
You are correct and that can be extended to pretty much all of Scandanavia and Europe. They have neither the capacity nor willingness to fight for their countries. They have been freeloading under the protection of US defense for so long to prioritize social welfare they would be toast.
I am not seeing overwhelming Russia power in display so not sure there is any real power in Europe.

I seem to recall Russia invading neighboring countries before NATO ever existed. Russia has, even recently, been invading other countries. However, it is rather interesting that none of the countries that they have invaded were NATO countries. Hmmmmm...... kinda makes joining NATO seem like a good idea, no?

He proved to every single former Eastern Bloc country that joined NATO that they made the right decision. The Finns and Swedes see this and want in to NATO. Probably every single other former Eastern bloc country/ Soviet state will want in. Whatever remains of the Ukraine will become NATO. He will have just completed his own encirclement.

Experts doubt reports of coup, but also see signs of discontent
Rumors circulating in China and among overseas Chinese social media are claiming Chinese President Xi Jinping, under fire for draconian COVID-19 lockdowns in Shanghai and elsewhere, will step down from power.
The rumors followed a meeting last week of the Party Politburo Standing Committee, the collective leadership group that rules China. They were traced in part to a Chinese-language YouTube video May 4 by Canadian-based blogger appearing under the persona “Lao Deng.” Details of the video quickly spread to social media outlets in China but were quickly censored.
The blogger, citing what he said was a senior Chinese Communist Party (CCP) security source, said a “coup” was launched against Mr. Xi at the meeting of senior party leaders in Beijing. According to blog, Mr. Xi was forced to step aside but will stay in place until a major party meeting later this year.
In his place, current Premier Li Keqiang will take over daily management of the party and government.
The video included the headline “Shocking Coup: Xi Jinping Has Stepped Down; Li Keqiang is the New Master.”
Mr. Xi supposedly agreed to voluntarily step down and will not be held responsible for the current turmoil over lockdowns.
A CIA spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Rumors in China are usually false. However, in some cases information derived from rumors preceded actual events. Examples include reports of the arrest of the “Gang of Four” Communist leaders following Mao Zedong’s death in 1976, and the downfall of regional CCP leader Bo Xilai on corruption charges in 2012.
Rumors can be unofficial leaks in a nation with little press freedom and tight government control over media. but several analysts of Chinese affairs say the rumors of a leadership change are probably not true.
But they may reflect either a party power struggle in advance of the forthcoming conclave, or deliberate disinformation by Mr. Xi aimed at burnishing the CCP’s tarnished image.
The lockdowns in China, including the financial hub of Shanghai, have angered large segments of China’s 1.4 billion people. Videos have circulated showing anti-government protests against forced quarantines and arrests and detention of people who test positive for COVID-19.
The lockdowns are key to Beijing‘s draconian and controversial “zero-COVID” policy, which aims to contain and snuff out the smallest signs of COVID infections through isolation and social control. The World Health Organization recently angered Chinese leaders by called this zero-COVID policy “unsustainable.”
Backlash against the government’s harsh approach is fueling widespread disgust of China‘s leadership, including Mr. Xi who has boasted of taking direct control of anti-pandemic measures. An estimated 330 million Chinese are currently in health-related lockdowns in some 45 cities since March, even as restrictions on gatherings and travel in other developed countries are being lifted.
Miles Yu, a former senior State Department policy planning official for China, said rumors in China, whether proven true or not, are often weaponized and used by feuding CCP factions in frequent power struggles.
“When the party as a whole caused a catastrophe in China, the regime usually needs to spread a rumored hope to have a better person emerge to save the party’s image,” Mr. Yu said.
If the rumor turns out to be true, it could be similar ploy used by Mao Zedong in the early 1960s after the disastrous Great Leap Forward. The backyard industrialization program led to the deaths of tens of millions of people from a government-caused famine.
Mao at the time was forced by party leaders to step aside from day-to-day management but remained supreme leader.
“Within four years Mao launched an even deadlier power struggle called the Cultural Revolution that removed all those Communist leaders who had forced him to step aside,” Mr. Yu said. “If the rumor turns out to be true, there is no reason Mr. Xi will not repeat that scenario while he is still in charge.”
Jennifer Zeng, a China affairs analyst who runs the video report Inconvenient Truths, said the rumors allege the power shift will be kept secret in order to give Mr. Xi time to try to correct his bad policies.
Mr. Xi also is said to be voluntarily giving up power in part in order to avoid being put in prison.
Ms. Zeng said there have been some subtle signs of a possible leadership change in Beijing, but the rumors are dubious.
“I don’t find Lao Deng’s claims very credible mainly for one reason,” she stated in a video. “The reason is that he claimed that after Li Keqiang takes over he will start an overall political reform, the CCP will ‘fade out’ from the stage, and China will adopt and establish a Western-style civilization. … Isn’t that too good to be true?”
The rumors are more likely a reflection of a power struggle, she said.
Opponents of Mr. Xi in the Party are said to have orchestrated the action based on the Chinese leader’s hardline policies and his developing a personality cult similar to Mao’s. Mr. Xi is attempting to break the longstanding practice of two terms in office for presidents, seeking a third five-year term later this year.
Another supposed sign of the coup was the canceling of a major speech by Secretary of State Antony Blinken set for May 4, a speech that was postponed after he tested positive for COVID.
One Chinese-language post on Twitter said another indicator was the removal of Mr. Xi’s books from a Beijing bookstore.
The party media organ People’s Daily on May 8 also failed to run one of the usual glowing photos of Mr. Xi on its front page. Instead, only Mr. Li, the premier, and another party leader were mentioned.

The lockdowns in China, including the financial hub of Shanghai, have angered large segments of China’s 1.4 billion people. Videos have circulated showing anti-government protests against forced quarantines and arrests and detention of people who test positive for COVID-19.
The lockdowns are key to Beijing‘s draconian and controversial “zero-COVID” policy, which aims to contain and snuff out the smallest signs of COVID infections through isolation and social control. The World Health Organization recently angered Chinese leaders by called this zero-COVID policy “unsustainable.”
Backlash against the government’s harsh approach is fueling widespread disgust of China‘s leadership, including Mr. Xi who has boasted of taking direct control of anti-pandemic measures. An estimated 330 million Chinese are currently in health-related lockdowns in some 45 cities since March, even as restrictions on gatherings and travel in other developed countries are being lifted.
Miles Yu, a former senior State Department policy planning official for China, said rumors in China, whether proven true or not, are often weaponized and used by feuding CCP factions in frequent power struggles.
“When the party as a whole caused a catastrophe in China, the regime usually needs to spread a rumored hope to have a better person emerge to save the party’s image,” Mr. Yu said.
If the rumor turns out to be true, it could be similar ploy used by Mao Zedong in the early 1960s after the disastrous Great Leap Forward. The backyard industrialization program led to the deaths of tens of millions of people from a government-caused famine.
Mao at the time was forced by party leaders to step aside from day-to-day management but remained supreme leader.
“Within four years Mao launched an even deadlier power struggle called the Cultural Revolution that removed all those Communist leaders who had forced him to step aside,” Mr. Yu said. “If the rumor turns out to be true, there is no reason Mr. Xi will not repeat that scenario while he is still in charge.”
Jennifer Zeng, a China affairs analyst who runs the video report Inconvenient Truths, said the rumors allege the power shift will be kept secret in order to give Mr. Xi time to try to correct his bad policies.
Mr. Xi also is said to be voluntarily giving up power in part in order to avoid being put in prison.
Ms. Zeng said there have been some subtle signs of a possible leadership change in Beijing, but the rumors are dubious.
“I don’t find Lao Deng’s claims very credible mainly for one reason,” she stated in a video. “The reason is that he claimed that after Li Keqiang takes over he will start an overall political reform, the CCP will ‘fade out’ from the stage, and China will adopt and establish a Western-style civilization. … Isn’t that too good to be true?”
The rumors are more likely a reflection of a power struggle, she said.
Opponents of Mr. Xi in the Party are said to have orchestrated the action based on the Chinese leader’s hardline policies and his developing a personality cult similar to Mao’s. Mr. Xi is attempting to break the longstanding practice of two terms in office for presidents, seeking a third five-year term later this year.
Another supposed sign of the coup was the canceling of a major speech by Secretary of State Antony Blinken set for May 4, a speech that was postponed after he tested positive for COVID.
One Chinese-language post on Twitter said another indicator was the removal of Mr. Xi’s books from a Beijing bookstore.
The party media organ People’s Daily on May 8 also failed to run one of the usual glowing photos of Mr. Xi on its front page. Instead, only Mr. Li, the premier, and another party leader were mentioned.

The Russian Defence Ministry continues to study materials on the implementation of military biological programs of the United States and its NATO allies on the territory of Ukraine.
We have already mentioned Robert Pope, director of the Cooperative Threat Reduction Programme and author of the idea of the Central Depository of Highly Dangerous Microorganisms in Kiev.
In his statement of April 10, 2022, Pope said that "...there is no reason to claim that research related to the development of biological weapons is taking place in Ukraine...". He previously claimed that "...the Americans did not find biological weapons when they first started working with Ukraine, and they still haven't. In addition, Ukraine lacks the infrastructure to develop and produce biological weapons...".
I would like to recall that the term "biological weapons" includes biological formulations that contain pathogenic micro-organisms and toxins, as well as the means of delivery and use of said formulations.
While the priority for Ukrainian healthcare is socially significant diseases such as HIV, poliomyelitis, measles and hepatitis, US customers are interested in a completely different nomenclature: cholera, tularemia, plague and hantaviruses.
As a result of the special military operation on the territory of Ukraine, facts of work with the specified pathogens, which are potential agents of biological weapons, have been revealed. At the same time, it was noted that Ukraine had sent a request to the manufacturing company regarding the possibility of equipping the Bayraktar drones with aerosol equipment.
In addition on March 9, three unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with 30-litre containers and equipment for spraying formulations were detected by Russian reconnaissance units in Kherson region. At the end of April, 10 more were found near Kakhovka.
All this information calls into question the statements of American experts.
We have previously provided a scheme for US coordination of biological laboratories and research institutes in Ukraine. Its preliminary analysis suggests that Ukraine is essentially a testing ground for the development of biological weapons components and the testing of new samples of pharmaceuticals.

It should be noted that the ideologues of US military-biological activities in Ukraine are the leaders of the Democratic Party.

In addition to US pharmaceutical companies and Pentagon contractors, Ukrainian state agencies are involved in military bioweapons activities, whose main tasks are to conceal illegal activities, conduct field and clinical trials and provide the necessary biomaterial.
Thus, the US Department of Defence, using a virtually internationally uncontrolled test site and the high-tech facilities of multinational companies, has greatly expanded its research capabilities, not only in the field of biological weapons, but also in gaining knowledge about antibiotic resistance and the antibodies to specific diseases in populations in specific regions.
It should be noted that not only the US, but also a number of its NATO allies are implementing their military-biological projects in Ukraine.
The German government has decided to launch a national biosafety programme independent of Washington, D.C., starting in 2013. Twelve countries, including Ukraine, are involved in the Programme.

The involvement of institutions subordinate to the Bundeswehr confirms the military orientation of biological research carried out in Ukrainian laboratories and raises questions about the goals pursued by the German armed forces in collecting biomaterials of Ukrainian citizens.
The documents obtained also show the involvement of Poland in Ukrainian biolaboratories. The participation of the Polish Institute of Veterinary Medicine in research aimed at assessing the epidemiological threats and spread of the rabies virus in Ukraine has been confirmed. Characteristically, the research in question was carried out jointly with the US-based Battelle Institute, a key contractor for the Pentagon.
In addition, Polish funding for the Lvov Medical University, which includes a member of US military biology projects, the Institute of Epidemiology and Hygiene, has been documented. The organisation has been running a retraining programme for specialists with experience of working with dual-use materials and technologies since 2002.
The special military operation by Russian troops succeeded in obtaining additional information about bio-incidents in Ukraine.
For example, materials indicating the intentional use of a multidrug-resistant tuberculosis pathogen in 2020 to infect the population of the Slavyanoserbsky district of the LPR were examined.
The flyers, made in the form of counterfeit currency notes, were infected with the tuberculosis agent and distributed to minors in Stepovoe village. The organisers of this crime took into account the behaviour of children, who have a habit of "putting everything in their mouths" and taking food with unwashed hands.
The results of bacteriological studies have confirmed the resistance of the isolated bacteria to first- and second-line anti-TB drugs, meaning that the disease caused by them is much more difficult to treat and the cost of treatment is much higher.
According to the conclusion of the Lugansk Republican Sanitary and Epidemiological Station, "...the contamination of the notes was most likely carried out artificially, as the material contains extremely dangerous strains of the pathogen in concentrations capable of ensuring infection and development of the tuberculosis process...".
In his conclusion, the chief doctor of the Lugansk Republican TB Dispensary also notes that "...there are all signs of deliberate, man-made contamination of the flyers with highly pathogenic biomaterial...".

Not convinced of that. Doesn't the fact that Russia invaded Ukraine because Ukraine was beginning to lean toward NATO show that NATO is necessary? Ukraine didn't fire the first shot nor invade Russia, it was the other way around.
"Making friends" with Russia's neighbors is not what I would call being an aggressor. Invading another country is.
Fair enough, but using specious justifications for your overall argument in an attempt to soften it only weakens its foundation, I think.
"Beginning to lean toward" is hardly factual based on public statements from both Ukrainian and NATO sources for at least several years.
"Making friends with Russia's neighbors" really soft-pedals the concept of signing a defense treaty with multiple countries with multiple agendas, especially in the case of an aggressive US-dominated one such as NATO.
Add to those two statements the very real - but let's agree to only call it "officially unconfirmed but never yet debunked by responsible fact checkers" at this point - possibility that the invasion was a preemptive strike based on the intelligence that Ukraine had already begun a several-day artillery barrage at the Donbass region in advance of a military incursion into the two self-declared independent republics. To me, the fact that Bai-Densky was bellowing about a Russian invasion for days beforehand when Zelensky was rebuffing the issue based on his own intelligence seems to firm up the entire supposition.
I use the term "responsible fact checkers" entirely tongue-in-cheek. They may only exist in the unicorn's realm.
IMHO, NATO has long outlived its usefulness, especially since the social-democrat welfare states of Europe have never properly funded it and have instead completely relied on the largesse of the American taxpayer. We've been fooled for decades about how important NATO is but it hasn't been anything but a sweet spring of cool water for Europe since the early 90s.

That is interesting and would be very good for the Russians. The question is how far back do you in history do you go to determine that? As it stands today? 100 yrs ago? 200 yrs ago? Russia and the Soviets forced many Ukrainians out of Crimea and moved Russians in. The same on the mainland following the Holdomor and as retribution following WW2.(h/t WRSA and GoV) fair use, etc.

Finns are generally nice people to know. Strong family ties. My ex is the daughter of Finns. Classic example of people wanting to be left alone in peace.The Finns of 2022 are not the Finns of 1940 any more than the Swedes of 2022 are the Viking Swedes of 900 ad.

Good question. Let me answer with something a little closer to home - and today also happens to be an anniversary of this event - and much longer ago, from This Day in History. I think it'll be interesting for you.
To directly answer your question, though, it's an issue of "there ain't no good guys, there ain't no bad guys, etc". And one thing which has always amazed me is how conventional thought seems to believe that present-day borders are somehow sacrosanct when history shows they're anything but.
In 2008, Putin did something in a breakaway republic of Georgia which garnered little attention. He essentially issued Russian passports to everyone in the republic and then invaded it to ostensibly protect Russian citizens. (They were mostly ethnic Russians anyway, and really, who cared about something called South Ossetia?)
He basically did that again in 2014 in Crimea. The difference was that this was AFTER the Obama-instigated Maidan revolution during which the Lithuainian snipers ensconced in the Ukrainian public buildings decimated both civilians and supportive Ukrainian military personnel. (Those are to this day about the most brutal videos I've ever watched)
When the new Ukrainian puppet regime was installed by Nuland/Kagan et al, Putin had to have been concerned about losing the headquarters of the Black Sea fleet (and their ONLY real warm-water port) in Sevastopol.
Events went downhill from there but officially, there was a referendum in which Crimeans voted their preference to be part of Russia and not the "new" Ukraine. I don't know if there was a Stalinist counting of the votes - maybe this was the beginning of Dominion, who knows, but Putin wasn't going to lose that naval base and he wanted it to be at least technically justifiable based on international standards or perhaps something else nebulous. Water under the bridge but not to the Slavs, naturally. They DO hold their grudges, don't they?
Which brings me back to the point that this is a Slavic family feud in which we have no part other than that idiot pResident of ours and his warmongering minions who have not yet missed a chance to pour fuel on that fire while simultaneously destroying our own economy and systems. Quite deft, really, and perhaps an admirable accomplishment if it didn't affect us so badly.

U.S. Congress declares war on Mexico
On May 13, 1846, the U.S. Congress overwhelmingly votes in favor of President James K. Polk’s request to declare war on Mexico in a dispute over Texas.
Under the threat of war, the United States had refrained from annexing Texas after the latter won independence from Mexico in 1836. But in 1844, President John Tyler restarted negotiations with the Republic of Texas, culminating with a Treaty of Annexation. The treaty was defeated by a wide margin in the Senate because it would upset the slave state/free state balance between North and South and risked war with Mexico, which had broken off relations with the United States. But shortly before leaving office and with the support of President-elect Polk, Tyler managed to get the joint resolution passed on March 1, 1845. Texas was admitted to the Union on December 29.
While Mexico didn’t follow through with its threat to declare war, relations between the two nations remained tense over border disputes, and in July 1845, President Polk ordered troops into disputed lands that lay between the Neuces and Rio Grande rivers.
In November, Polk sent the diplomat John Slidell to Mexico to seek boundary adjustments in return for the U.S. government’s settlement of the claims of U.S. citizens against Mexico and also to make an offer to purchase California and New Mexico. After the mission failed, the U.S. army under Gen. Zachary Taylor advanced to the mouth of the Rio Grande, the river that the state of Texas claimed as its southern boundary.
Mexico, claiming that the boundary was the Nueces River to the northeast of the Rio Grande, considered the advance of Taylor’s army an act of aggression and in April 1846 sent troops across the Rio Grande. Polk, in turn, declared the Mexican advance to be an invasion of U.S. soil, and on May 11, 1846, asked Congress to declare war on Mexico, which it did two days later.
After nearly two years of fighting, peace was established by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed on February 2, 1848. The Rio Grande was made the southern boundary of Texas, and California and New Mexico were ceded to the United States. In return, the United States paid Mexico the sum of $15 million and agreed to settle all claims of U.S. citizens against Mexico.

As I understand it Putin went to the international court because of the corruption in the Ukraine. The court said that Ukraine never became an independent country and this was an internal Russian matter. That is the reason the UN never uses the word "war" when referring to this conflict.
