I have no shortage of chickens in my back yard: the kind that squawk, scratch, sometimes fly a bit, and lay eggs.

I keep them well fed. In return, they serve us breakfast every morning, and fertilizer for the garden in the spring and fall.

But keeping those cantankerous bags of feathers fed is getting more and more expensive.

I go about an hour out of town, into farm country, to buy large quantities of feed twice a year. I have a trailer - which hauls about 1 and 1/2 times what my pickup truck hauls, and I fill it with 50 pound sacks, which I store in a shed until needed.

So the last time I bought feed was late summer.

I paid $9.99 per sack for Purina Nutrina 16% protein layer feed back then.

I went back to the same rural feed store this afternoon.

That same sack of feed is now $13.99 each, for 50 pound sacks.

And that is the CHEAPEST place I can find good quality feed.

Tractor Supply’s cheaper brands are a bit cheaper than what I buy my girls, but that stuff is awful! My girls won’t eat the stuff. Personally, I think Dumor brand stinks. I don’t blame my girls for turning their beeks up at Dumor feed.

The rural Tennessee feed store manager where I bought my girls feed this afternoon told me that, back about a month or so ago, they had some trouble getting chicken feed, but not right now. She has plenty on hand, as does the local Farmer’s Co-op.

Right now, all she is having trouble getting is some varieties of horse feed.

I could've wrote this. It's my story too. My friend asked me the other day why I keep free-loaders around. (the ones who no longer lay eggs) I can't bare to kill them. They have a home for life. They served me well with eggs when they were young and now the younger ones are doing the same. But here on the VA/Tn line, feed is starting to cost a lot more and is getting harder to stock up on. I just went last week and I think I have enough to make it through winter.

I also went to the local WalMart (suburban Memphis).

I was trying to get in and out as fast as possible, so I didn’t spend alot of time looking around.

But I can report that I bought the last four cottage cheese containers, and the last six packets of powdered Great Value brand Country Gravy. They were well stocked with breads of different varieties.

They seemed low on milk. Lots of people were shopping, but everybody was polite and corgial. Most people were masked, but not all. Karen was nowhere to be found. Like I said, people were friendly, as each went about their own personal business.

The checkout lines - including the self checkout lines - were very long. But even there, people were patient and calm.

I didn’t see any carts that looked like panic buying. Lots of milk, bread, canned soup, chili and other types of things you see people in the south buy the day before a winter storm.

Also, I have been trying to buy saltine crackers from Walmart.com for over a week now. They have not been able to ship me any.

So today, while in the store, I tried to buy some.

No go. There wasn a box to be had anywhere,

When we went to a variety of grocery stores down here saltine's were either down to a few boxes, or gone. Pasta also seems to be getting low in most places.

I haven't been able to find saltine crackers (Kroger brand) for quite awhile now.

I suppose there is a run on them since they are good meal filler especially with soups.

I kinda look at it this way: just like my dogs, when he gets hungry enough, he'll eat. No way will he starve himself to death. You're kind-of enabling him.

JMHO

When I was a kid, Mom made me string green beans until my fingers bled and I cried. I would die before I ate the things, and I'm not kidding. They're not even allowed in this house.

I just watched a grocery haul video, which I rarely do anymore, they make me want to go shopping. One thing she mentioned was acetaminophen, just out of curosity I looked at walmart.com and they are completely out of the equate brand and on amzzon a 500 count bottle is $14.82 and that's the amazon brand. I have some stored, but DH takes a lot of it, he may have to buy his own in the future.

ETA: I looked at "my list" on walmart and what popped up was Extra strength acetaminophen, 2 bottles for 9.98, looks like I put the wrong search terms in. However, they are out of a lot of acetaminophen .

We went into San Antonio on Friday, and went to Costco. For the most part, they had stock but if you've gone there several times (like we have), you can tell that they are placing it carefully to make it look like they've got a lot. Gaps in the stock above our heads. Gaps in meat. No canned (wet) cat food at all. Veggies were one of the places where they'd artfully arranged to make it look like they had a lot, and Son (Trucker Son was with us, just left this morning) said, "This is mostly what I haul to CC. Why are they so low?? Where is it going?"

As an aside, he dropped us off so we could run into the bathroom (it's a long trip, lol) and parked the car. They made me walk all the way back to the door to show my card so he could enter, which they have never done before.

We then stopped at HEB in Boerne on the way home. No canned or dried cat food at all. Oddly, they had some things my local HEB didn't have. I don't need that--I have a nice, full pantry--but I got some things anyway. But they were very short on some other things. And yes, the Valentine aisle looked picked over and sparse.

We have 10 cats, one inside who eats canned food (she's ok) and 9 outside who eat dried food. I have a good stock in the pantry of dried food, but I will be in trouble if there's a permanent shortage. I can't keep it anywhere but on the floor in the pantry because the inside cat will chew through the paper and eat! Obviously the garage is out because apparently 10 cats can't keep mice from entering it. So I am limited to the amount I can keep on hand. Son pointed out, cheap-ish dry cat food uses grain as a filler--and China is hoarding all of their grain at the moment.

You can fit quite a bit of dry food in a galvanized garbage can... if you put a layer of DE over the top and duct tape the lid, you won't have insect issues, and rodents can't chew into them.

Just came back from ShopRite.
Figured would be nuts due the incoming snow storm. (Actually forecast is down to 2" now)
It was just a normal Saturday busy.
Gaps from last weekend were now filled.
Few here and there of a brand of something but there were still other brands of the same product.

Neither here nor there.
Well, the shortage of food is starting to hit main-stream media. Here's one news report:

I'm seeing this all over facespy this morning, photos of empty shelves from all over the eastern part of the US.

Just came back from a brand new Walmart. Had to make a pet food run. Not.A.Single.Can. of cat food on the shelves. I bought two bags of the good dry stuff.
No chicken, and very little meat of any kind at all. Most of he other shelves were empty or picked clean.
I got some canned meats.

Stores that turn a profit just don't close.
There is a reason somewhere.
Possibly loss of a lease on the space?
Or they could not be profitable.

I can't speculate why the closure; whether it's due to solely local issues or a corporate decision.

As a very broad thought, grocery stores operate on very thin margins. So a low cost player like Aldi might be affected first by rising costs and supply bosses.

Update.. we are due for a big snow storm tonight and after reading all the food shortages, I decided to stock up on what I can, while there's still something to get.
The parking lot was jammed packed. People were driving round and round looking for a spot to park.

I couldn't even find the saltine cracker shelves. A guy stacking food further down the aisle said there was some right here (as he pointed to an empty shelf.) He said he had stocked 2 cases of saltines last night. All gone now.
Then when I leaned all the way down, I saw one lone box on the lowest shelf, in the far corner, in back. A guy got it for me. Whew! I was about jumping up and down yelling; I scored one!!! :eleph:

There was hardly any meat... almost completely wiped out. There were no biscuits in the cans for baking.
I got some of the last heavy whipping cream, some of the last Sour cream, some of the last Ricotta cheese, some of the last salted butter.

Felt like if I'd gone an hour later, these items might not have been there.
So because of the impending snowstorm and shortages combined, this is a bad situation.

Whelp, I believe I just nabbed the last bag on the face of the earth of the Addiction Duck Royale Grain Free Dry Cat Food, 4 Lb. Got THE last bag on Amazon with it nowhere else to be found. So now I have to switch cat food which will probably bring about much throwing up between my 2 cats. Picked two other dry Duck cat food brands. Soon, all pet food may become obsolete!
Maybe if you slowly introduce another food by mixing it with your favorite food while you still have some. Increase slowly the new and decrease slowly the old. It might not bother them quite so much.

Dont buy more than you will eat in 6 wk -2 months! They are going rancid quickly after purchase. ALL BRANDS. RITZ CRACKERS AND GENERIC RITZ dont seem to have that problem but SALTINES all kinds generic and name brand are turning up rancid within a couple of months.

Wife has been out all day doing retired lady with no bills thing (IE shopping). She just called me from a Giant grocery store in Lorton, VA. Brand new store and the milk aisle is completely empty. Part of it is panic buying due to the storm we're about to get, I think.

I’ve had to toss many boxes.
They weren’t that old either, just seriously gross.
So rancid they almost felt like my tongue burned tasting one.
Just terrible.

I use 5 gallon buckets, rubbermaid totes and/or galvanized garbage cans to hold chicken feed - would work just as well for dry cat food.

I've vacuum sealed crackers and they keep that way really well. Perhaps the lack of oxygen doesn't let the fat in them oxidize and get rancid.

DH and I went to a larger town to the farm store. Well stocked. Lots of canning jars - country something - made in China. No thanks!

re: saltines...........I believe it's the ingredient, soybean oil, which goes bad quickly........GMO oil and it stinks.........

I happen to love crackers and salty crunchy stuff.
I dunno, but whatever went in my mouth that time had me running for some water and a bristle brush gettin that crap out of my mouth.

I’m not sure I’ll ever buy an extra box of saltines or triscuits, ever again.

Anyone know definitively if vacuum sealing saltine crackers would extend the shelf life? When I searched online, I found articles that said it did not help at all and also that it make them last forever.
