First of all, YIKES! $27 a pound? Yee gaawwds! Second, I LOVE a nice omelet. I usually add ham or bacon, cheddar cheese, mushrooms, and sometimes diced green onions. Sometimes with O’Brien potatoes on the side. Yummy dinner!

ETA: If I happen to have some in the fridge, I’ll put some salsa on top of the omelette.
Eggs, are a gift from God.
Omelettes are a strong, second place in the gift category. :)

My take on commodities that we get: for the last year or so not much in the way of dried beans, but this past month we got a 2# bag of pintos, we use to get five or six bags. No green beans in commodities for months and almost no corn. Although I have a good stash of corn and working on my supply of cut green beans. We often get raisins and did this last time. We got a couple of cans of mixed fruit. Nothing fresh this last time, when we do get fresh its fruit and never vegetables. Its been slim pickings but that often happens. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for what we get in commodities.

I'm always greatful for whatever we get.

God is good all the time

I take two ladies to the food pantry and since I qualify I started getting food too figuring it pays for my gas. What we get is very random. A couple years ago we were given bags and bags of dehydrated figs. This year we've been given seven boxes of raisins and I've lost count of the bags of lentils and dried garbanzo beans. This last time we got fish and bologna. We also got a boatload of bologna in July and I don't like bologna. One of the ladies I take doesn't like fish so I traded her fish for bologna YEAH win for me. We also got peanut butter this time but not last. We generally get pasta and a can or two of pasta sauce and/or tomato sauce. I think this time I got two cans of pears and one of fruit cocktail but no vegetables.

The way it works around here is you can go to surrounding counties and get food from their mobile pantries too. I think that you'd be going to a different county each day or maybe even the same day. Ours is from 4:00 p.m. to 7 or 8 I think. I always go at 4 as I don't drive after dark and in winter try to be at the front of the line which requires being there an hour early. I know several people who do that but I don't need the food to survive and would feel greedy doing that. Its interesting how the people at the senior complex across from me trade items around. They have a rolling cart in the dining room that they put items on for whoever wants them so pretty much nothing goes to waste. If I get any more lentils I think they will be donated to the cart! Very very seldom we get body wash, shampoo or bar soap. Its always scented so I give it to my former d-i-l who is one of the ladies I take. Several times we've gotten bags of walnuts which is a luxury and last time a container of dates. which I love.

Yeah! Absolute madness...I also love a nice omelet. I keep it simple - cheese, a meat that's available, and salsa. It's not quite a ribeye, but it's also 1/20th the cost.

What is the best day of the week to buy meat?

1. Find out when your local grocery store marks down their meats. My local grocery store does this every morning around 8am. Monday mornings being the best time to go in, there is usually more meat being ordered for weekend shoppers since it tends to be a busier shopping time, thus more markdowns on Monday's.Apr 27, 2017

I wanted to mention Menards for prep foods. I don’t know if ALL Menards have what ours sells, but don’t forget to look!

In the back, past all of the hardware things is a fairly large foods section of things like snacks, coffee, granolas, as well as staples like peanut butter-and Jif, too, not some knock off stuff.
I meant to look for spices, too.

I’m going there this week.

For example, two of the large Jif jars wrapped up together were only 7.99$ (wait! No, I think it was 6.99$?)
I was looking for other things that day and was with hubby. I’d have grabbed the Jif pack, just bought it at Kroger and wasn’t thinking clearly.
He was in a huge hurry as we had a very long list of errands that day...

They also carry a huge huge section of cleaners and laundry- the large Tide Simple jug I got was 8.99$!
There are even bigger junmbo sizes for around 15-20$ as well as other brands like Purex

I think kroger does that on Monday’s. During the tightest lock down days that’s when I’d go shopping. All of the scardy cays stayed home

(No crowds, plus mark down prices. I kind of miss those days lol )

I don't know if true but...........

The best time and day to go grocery shopping

According to Google Maps data, Mondays at 8am is the least busy time to shop while Saturdays between 12-3pm is the busiest time (which makes sense since many people put off shopping until the weekend).Jan 12, 2021

Most stores haven't restocked from the weekend on Monday morning. There won't be much bread, and beer and soft drinks will be pretty well wiped out. Ask me how I know this? :)
And any weekday afternoon, right after school lets out, is an absolute madhouse in stores in this area. I don't set foot in any store on a Saturday, too many running, screaming kids that their parents don't bother to correct. One of the last times I did go on a Saturday, a very large woman decided she'd sit down on one of the wine displays --- and she collapsed it and the next aisle. They should have had her locked up and made her pay for it. She sued the store and got $$$.

That's a good thought..Menards does their 11% off everything rebates at least once/month it seems. You can always put the rebate toward more stuff for the pantry.

They have canned veg, soup, gravy and biscuit/baking mix packets, spices and rubs, cooking oil, mac and cheese, boxed cheesy potatoes and mashed potato flakes, pasta and jarred sauces, breakfast food, and definitely peanut butter.

It’s never crowded in there either. I think people just don’t realize, or have forgotten about what they carry.

And I’m pretty sure they carry paper products too.

***still a terrible stigma for me to receive instead of contribute, but that's a discussion between a noggin Dr and myself***

What we now receive in food assistance is $7.56 each per day to eat.

We continue to be thankful, but ask each other all the time " where is this money coming from?? "

DON'T allow yourself feel that way. each of us here know your history; know how your injuries devastated a productive lifestyle.

when we were kids I can recall speaking in hushed tones if a family had to "go on relief" because it was a shameful thing back at that time. everyone who COULD WORK DID WORK - those who didn't were looked at as shameful. this last IS NOT you. we're about the same age; its likely you had the same experience as a child. put it down brother. what you're receiving is necessary and GOD provided.

Saved, to glorify God.
TIP: If you want to make beef bone broth, split beef bones at a RESTAURANT SUPPLY are cheaper! $1 a pound at Chef's Store vs $3.99 at Safeway or Kroger. But, you must buy 25lbs.
********************
You are foolish to try to home can beef by buying it at a supermarket. The price is half what you pay in a supermarket in the "Chefs Store" restaurant supply. But you must buy in bulk.
Gordons Food Service
Cash and carry

REMEMBER IF YOU ARE CANNING BEEF you dont need to buy the best cuts, you just need beef, there are whole boneless cuts (not ground) beef for $3.50- -$5 a lb in restaurant supply. The cheapest, TOUGHEST CUT OF BEEF will come out fork tender after canning! BUY THE BONELESS for canning or you will spend all your time removing bones. It will taste ok if you just can it raw, but browning it a bit before putting it in the jar will give it a "beefier" taste.

From some one who has made all the mistakes you can make in canning and learned the hard way.

Prior to the attack I could go to my favorite regional chain grocery store any time of the week and get what I wanted. Used to go on Monday mornings and would often get marked down steaks. Haven't done that for nineteen months. Best time now seems to be Thursday afternoon and latter Friday morning.

OMG! When they start messing with potatoes I get real nervous. Could not get 10lb bag at 2 different stores. Had to pay twice as much for 2 -5 lb bags. Went online and ordered 20lbs from Idaho. Shipping was expensive but I'll be darned if TG is going to be wrecked this year because of that wacko crook in the white house.
Also couldn't get 1 gal jugs of Crystal Geyser water. And no chuck roasts.
I guess I will have to start distilling tap. It makes a mess because it is so hard up here.

Kroger looked pretty sad in:
Meat. All kinds. Every case. Tons of ground beef though.

Only two hams. That’s it, just two.
Chicken picked over.
Pork chops very pricey compared to two weeks ago.

Soda aisle. Some shelves totally empty. Lady standing next to me commented how bare things are. We both gave each other “the look” when I said it won’t get getter any time soon either.
Cereal, granola bar aisle picked over.

That’s all I can think of right now.

HMMMM. My wife just checked HEB and they don't have any 10-pd bags of potatoes either. This is tough for her given that she's a Midwesterner: potatoes are one of her core foods.

I can add in on a good time. For the Food Lion grocery stores in the northern VA area; it seems that Sundays between 2 and 3pm is when they put out their markdowns. We've filled up our freezer with meats from hitting these stores at the right time.
For example; pork tenderloins that go for around 9 bucks (perfect for the 2 of us) sometimes get marked down to $ 3.50 each. Pork chops, 10 pack for 4 dollars, etc.

We load up, bring it home and vacuum pack them in packages sized good for a meal for the two of us. Going hungry when I was younger; I can tell you a good feeling is having that freezer full. Wife doesn't understand my thing about having food stuffed back; but she likes it. We've actually had to buy shelves we put in the dining room to store the canned goods we couldn't fit in the cabinets. We're well stocked for sure.

Has anyone noticed that cleaning items seem to be a little short stocked these days? Pine Sol is a little scarce (but there's plenty of Fabuloso and no name stuff on the shelves). Same with Lysol-still seems to be in short supply; Wal Mart's generic brand is just is good (exact same formula actually) but it's always gone from the shelves.

I've learned to like Fabuloso, I use it to clean the comode every day. Pine Sol use to be cheap and now it close to $4 for a bottle. The knock off at Dollar Tree is worthless.

From real life experience, this reported increase is true.

I read through the comments following the article and, while I agree with the sentiment of the taxpayer/working people's rage, the bump will ease the strain in my own home.

I know what you mean about a stigma. Growing up we'd get food stamps and food boxes from local churches etc. Some of the people doing the handing out seemed to glory in making you feel about 2 inches tall. I remember that vividly..........

Don't let it get to you. With each passing day things WILL get better. Have faith and don't let it get you down. It's honest, it's going to get better.

Bought a can of the Glory's Seasoned Cabbage at WM yesterday, it's not bad, it's not something we'd eat on a regular basis but would keep on the shelf as emergency preps.
most of their stuff is good but the cabbage.....isnt....in my opinion.......i wont buy another can.......i should have told you and saved you 89 cents

I've used Fabuloso, but there's nothing better than mopping a floor with pine sol. Love the smell too. Fabuloso is good for the bathroom but I got to have pine sol smelling floors. The home depot pine sol knock off isn't very good either-tried it before.

Neither here nor there.
We like Margaret Holme's brand, but I haven't tried any in a can that tastes as good as home cooked. Everything in a can, no matter the brand, is cooked a bit too soft for us, but it's better than not having any at all.

I have yet to see that brand here locally, might be able to find it one of the Des Moines stores though. And agreed, canned goods are better than nothing, just wanted to have a little somethin somethin on the shelves if you know what I mean.

Yeah. I've added canned cabbage to my pantry just to have more of a variety in the veggie dept.

Might have to try that too. Wife LOVES boiled cabbage but all I like really is sauerkraut. I ought to make up some sauerkraut actually, thanks for jogging the ol' brain. It's easy to make for sure, mama showed me long time ago. Tastes better and less salty than store bought too.
