Medical Reasonable Rascal's Response Bag

Member Weps asked me to list the contents of my personal response bag as carried in my car and to gun shows and other such events. The list is not complete because I didn't bother to go out and drag it inside to go through it. Not to mention I am planning very soon to upgrade my bag to something larger and more capable, and modularized like my commercial industrial trauma kits. I need to carry a glucometer again, having had need of one twice now at gun shows.

What I carry is based on my experiences over the decades as well as my skill level: I am an actively licensed Paramedic and Registered Nurse. I am not authorized to carry IV fluids and such under normal circumstances but were I to go back-country where aid could be many hours or even a couple days away I would. Along with a minor surgery kit, sutures, staples, etc. Not to mention a medication module. But that is not for this thread.

Right now all of this fits inside a standard shoulder or hand carry bag of about 14" x 10" x 10". Roughly.

Rascal’s Emergency Bag

Gloves, Nitrile, 6 pairs

Trauma Shears

Tourniquet, Combat Type

Stethoscope, Dual Head

Adult BP Cuff

Pulse Oximeter, Nonin Onyx II, Milsurp

GI Manual Field Suction

Micro Pocket BVM

Nasalpharyngeal Airway, 28 French

Chest Decompression Needles, 1 each 14 and a10 ga

CPR Pocket Mask

Israeli Bandages, 1 each 6” and 4”

QuickClot Combat Gauze, XL

Compressed Gauze

4x4 Gauze Pads, 10 pairs

4” Gauze Rollers, 2 each

4” Persys Elastic Wrap

Blizzard Trauma Hypothermia Blanket

Necklite Moldable Brace

36” Malleable Aluminum Splint

Trauma Dressing, 10” x 30”

7-1/2” x 8” ABD Pads, 4 each

Waterjel-type Burn Dressings, 2 or 3 sizes

Somewhere in there is a bottle of hand sanitizer as well.

Not carried in my bag is my personal AED, and a LifeVac anti-choking device. Yeah, I had a choker last year, the first show I exhibited them at. Anyone who says there is no coincidence doesn't travel in my circles.

Oooh, ouch. That'll take some figuring.

That particular oximeter alone costs around $100, if you can find one. 2 years ago they were listed as $400 and restricted to military sales only. They have lightened up as it were but they are still pricey and hard to find. Not impossible, just intermittent. I bought my oximeters as new surplus. I sell regular common oximeters for $20 with batteries. Decent, just not automatic 'on' and bombproof and accurate within half a percent.

Factoring in the small stuff I didn't list because I don't have the bag in front of me and a standard oximeter in place of the military model, roughly $300 - $325. To equal the listed oximeter another $50-60 if I can find one that isn't listed for $100. The BVM and the suction are pricey. Between them you are looking at a list price total of around $100. Fortunately I like surplus buys when I can and that brings costs down for my bag as well as others.

Chest seals are edging towards $20/pair now unless you disregard out dates (I do, they aren't a sterile item to begin with). Chest needles are restricted to qualified buyers so that would save $30 off the projected total though.

This is rough because honestly I have never figured the build cost for my personal bag.

My new bag will look something like this:

Trauma Open.jpg

That is a demo for a contracted build for a maritime construction company. Not nearly as capable as mine but intended for 2 serious trauma cases without restocking, and usable by Joe Construction Worker. It is intended for Alaskan water construction barges. The hypothermia stretcher alone cost me around $135 each. One per bag. The sub-unit bags cost me around $15 each with the labeling, and the Bleeding Control bags were around $15 - $18 each. With the TRAUMA KIT patch on the outside and the custom labeled sub-unit bag I am looking at nearly $100 there.

Hope this helps.

Easiest way is to contact me directly. We are amateur web site builders and it shows. But that said this is what we have for now, so you can see what I mean:

Actually it is my wife who does the building: she won't let me play. All errors in grammar are hers and descriptions are hers. I have no explanation for the carnival house of mirrors picture elements.
