President-Elect Security Briefings Begin Today (All Our Secrets)?

Obama gets presidential-style security briefings

Washington, Nov 6 (PTI) As Barack Obama moves to put in place a transition team to take over from the Bush administration, President-elect today got the first presidential-style security briefings. Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell gave the President-elect the first national security briefings, which is privy only to the US President.

The presidential-style security briefing, which is exclusively for the American head of state, will detail not only the threat perceptions but also the various responses, including special operations that are currently under way in different parts of the world. The details of the Obama-McConnell meeting will not be made public as is always the case by ways of intelligence briefings to President George W Bush.

It is learnt that Mike Hayden, Director of Central Intelligence Agency, has informed top officials that the US intelligence agency would start sharing classified information with the president-elect during the transition phase. It would include the full range of capabilities deployed by the United States.

The new administration, which will take office on January 20, faces enormous security challenges both at home and abroad as it prepares to take over from the Bush presidency. Russian-American ties have been strained, particularly over Moscow's war with US ally Georgia and Washington's move on missile shield in Poland and Czech Republic.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev yesterday announced the deployment of short-range missiles in an area of western Russia wedged between Lithuania and Poland, in response to US plans to site missile defence bases in eastern Europe. PTI.

Has this kind of thing been done before for a president-elect? Does it include Joe Biden also? The whole idea that this kind of briefing is necessary 2 days after the election seems to me to be a gigantic DOT with everything else going on. With all the threads coming together in the BS, TPTB really must be expecting a SHTF situation, and sooner rather than later. The heaviness in my heart has deepened so much in just a few days. God bless us all.

It will be interesting to watch Obama's demeanor over the next few weeks. Watch how quickly he "ages."

Exactly what I was thinking.. once he sees just how dangerous the world really is.. hope and change aren't going to do much.

Its going to be a wake up call for him I bet.

That this briefing should happen now, seems very telling. With everything currently in play (the economy; not just ours, but global ... the saber rattling here, there & everywhere and so many people foolishly thinking that one man is the answer to everything) I do think, feel, believe that within the next 60 - 90 days, we'll find ourselves in a world we want to believe can't be real.........

I know this is :dhr: but..........

I feel even more ..... concerned ..... that information is being given to person who, if they weren't 'Bama-man Hussein, couldn't qualify from a security standpoint, for an entry level position at the FBI or CIA ...... But he now has full and unfettered access to any and all information he (or his cronies and cohorts, here and abroad) want ........... :shkr:

Michelle is expecting him to come home and let her know the new winner of Dancing with the Stars and the next American Idol after this briefing.

And maybe the outcome of the "Lost" ABC series.

:lkick:

Intelligence briefings always happen with a transition of Administrations. However, it has been a long time since their was a "wartime" transition. In addition, those briefings usually take place with a president elect who has been fully vetted and is "known" to be qualified as POTUS.

Yes, and I'd pay cash money to have been a fly on the wall to see the look on his face. This job is way bigger than he is. Way.

Curious as well if this is the "norm" as to such briefings 2 days after an election, seems a bit earley. But again this may be the norm anyone know for sure?

If they tell him secrets and he does not get elected, do they then have to kill him? He has not as of yet been elected president.

Electoral College

2008 Presidential Election

June thru October 2008
• Preparation Stage
The Federal Register prepares letters and instructional materials for the Archivist to send to the Governors of the 50 States and the Mayor of the District of Columbia. The materials include pamphlets on Federal election law and detailed instructions on how to prepare and submit the electors' credentials (Certificates of Ascertainment) and the electoral votes (Certificates of Vote). In October, the Federal Register begins contacting Governors and Secretaries of State to establish contacts for the coming election.

November 4, 2008
• General Election
Registered voters in each State and the District of Columbia vote for President and Vice President. They cast their vote by selecting a pair of candidates listed on a single Presidential/Vice Presidential ticket. By doing so, they also choose slates of Electors to serve in the Electoral College. Forty-eight of the fifty States and the District of Columbia are "winner-take-all" (ME and NE are the exceptions).

Mid-November thru December 15, 2008
• Transmission of Certificates of Ascertainment to NARA
The Ascertainment lists the names of the electors appointed and the number of votes cast for each person. The States prepare seven originals authenticated by the Governor's signature and the State seal. One original and two certified copies are sent to the Federal Register (the remaining six are attached to the electoral votes at the State meetings). The Governors must submit the certificates "as soon as practicable," after their States certify election results. They should be transmitted no later than December 15 (but Federal law sets no penalty for missing the deadline).

December 9, 2008
• Date for Determination of Controversy as to Appointment of Electors
States must make final determinations of any controversies or contests as to the appointment of electors at least six days before December 15 meetings of electors for their electoral votes to be presumptively valid when presented to Congress. Determinations by States' lawful tribunals are conclusive, if decided under laws enacted prior to election day.

December 15, 2008
• Meetings of Electors and Transmission of Certificates of Vote to NARA
The electors meet in their State to select the President and Vice President of the United States. No Constitutional provision or Federal law requires electors to vote in accordance with the popular vote in their States. NARA's web site lists the States that have laws to bind electors to candidates. The electors record their votes on six "Certificates of Vote," which are paired with the six remaining Certificates of Ascertainment. The electors sign, seal and certify packages of electoral votes and immediately send one set of votes to the President of the Senate and two sets to the Archivist. The Federal Register preserves one archival set and holds the reserve set subject to the call of the President of the Senate to replace missing or incomplete electoral votes.

December 24, 2008
• Deadline for Receipt of Electoral Votes at NARA
The President of the Senate and the Archivist should have the electoral votes in hand by December 24, 2008 (States face no legal penalty for failure to comply). If votes are lost or delayed, the Archivist may take extraordinary measures to retrieve duplicate originals.

On or Before January 3, 2009
• Transmission of Certificates of Ascertainment to Congress
As the new Congress assembles, the Archivist transmits copies of the Certificates of Ascertainment to Congress. This generally occurs in late December or early January when the Archivist and/or representatives from the Federal Register meet with the Secretary of the Senate and the Clerk of the House. This is, in part, a ceremonial occasion. Informal meetings may take place earlier.

January 6, 2009
• Counting Electoral Votes in Congress
The Congress meets in joint session to count the electoral votes (Congress may pass a law to change the date). The President of the Senate is the presiding officer. If a Senator and a House member jointly submit an objection, each House would retire to its chamber to consider it. The President and Vice President must achieve a majority of electoral votes (270) to be elected. In the absence of a majority, the House selects the President, and the Senate selects the Vice President. If a State submits conflicting sets of electoral votes to Congress, the two Houses acting concurrently may accept or reject the votes. If they do not concur, the votes of the electors certified by the Governor of the State would be counted in Congress.

January 20, 2009 at Noon
• Inauguration
The President elect takes the Oath of Office and becomes the U.S. President.

See my previous post. We are a nation at war on multiple fronts. The "early" briefings are no surprise to me.

What is surprising to me (but not really) is "early" briefings for a POTUS-Elect who is not fully vetted.

This is the first presidential 'turnover' since Homeland Security became a significant operational unit of the government. I imagine the nature of the security exchange of info is new, but not the changeover transition stuff altogether.

PLUS 1,000 !!!!!
...........And it's that little thing about being fully, honesly and completely vetted, that Team 'Bama-man has not been willing to do.

Open up the closed / sealed records including all his college applications, his school records including his time in the Indonesian madrasa when he lived as a citizen of Indoenesia with his step-father and both his US AND Indonesian passports.

Sorry, but it seems the American people are being forced to accept that NOTHING in his past is to be scrutinized; not his travels, not his ability to have funds beyond what he claimed, not his roommates and friends who are interesting in that they seem to be ...... 'persons of interest' from nations not generally friendly to the US or its interests .......

Instead, for the sake of making 'history' we're to just accept that 'Bama-man Hussein more or less only came into being about a decade ago....... And all his activites and associations prior to that are either 'too personal' or 'too trivial' to be brought into the light of day........

Sorry. But the more someone tries to hide something, the more I think they have something they need to hide it........ Otherwise the carefully contrived lies they now want to pass off as reality, will come tumbling down aund them ..... and who and what they really are, will no longer be able to be hidden or dismissed .............

There is a thread here somewhere discussing this.

This transition *IS* different than any prior transition...either some new law or executive order mandated this happening sooner/quicker and in more detail than in previous transitions.

I will provide a link once I find it.

I thought he was ineligible/couldn't get his clearance to be privy to these state secrets?

Evidently that no longer matters.

650 odd million dollars, much of it untraceable and from overseas, buys a lot of election support ........... And I would assume that much of that election support is still in place ;)

Eligibility for a security clearance has NEVER mattered for an elective office.

BEING ELECTED grants the clearance.

George W. Bush's first security briefing was Tuesday, December 5, 2000:

http://archives.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/12/06/bush.interview/index.html

Bush received his first security briefing Tuesday from the CIA. During the CBS interview, he said the biggest threat facing America was isolationism and that the country needs to reach out to allies to build a strong alliance to "fight terrorism or extremism."

But note, on that date, the results of the election were still up in the air and Gore saw "a 50-50 chance" of winning:

http://archives.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/12/05/recount.wrap/index.html

Gore, looking chipper enough to belie the effects of the legal battering he has endured in the last 24 hours, told a gathering of reporters outside the White House on Tuesday afternoon that he still thought he had a "50-50" chance of prevailing in Florida, with the state Supreme Court braced to consider two cases that could well determine who finally claims the Sunshine State's 25 electoral votes.

lol. I can hear it now.

Ok Boma, listen up.

There are 35 suitcase nukes here from Russia, 15 from Israel. 3 Tons of Anthrax went missing in 2003, and a warhead went missing in 2007. The Ammonium nitrate, all the cell phone detonators and big rigs that went missing were found, but we can't touch them or they will explode. The Ricin we found last year did belong to Iran but thats OK because they said they wont loose any more. The 65,000lbs of Anthrax Rumsfield sold Saddam in 1988 is still missing but at least we found all the VX. We found out where the 4million in counterfeit money we destroy every day comes from. The USA. The giant floating dirty bomb found last month was part of a 20 ship fleet and..

Now here is the scary part. Next month....oh never mind.

yeah. Great. Meanwhile, the stocks crash and every company in the US goes belly up. China wants their 3 Trillion we own them and other than that, everything is fine.

Would that be this?

http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/showthread.php?t=306824&highlight="security+briefings"

Link from Helpful's post (#9 of that thread):

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14424.html

For the first time, the government is conducting background checks on potential transition officials before there is a presidential election.

"We've been in regular contact with both candidates' transition teams by phone and in person," White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said at her briefing Thursday. "We've worked to facilitate security clearances for key transitional personnel from both teams. We've worked to establish working groups within the White House and throughout the administration to outline internal roles and responsibilities.

"Each agency has been directed by the president to prepare briefing materials. And also, career executives at the agencies have been involved in a range of activities to ensure that they're ready to provide continuity during the transition."

Earlier, Perino told Politico this is “an unprecedented effort based on changes we have had in our country,” including the creation of a Department of Homeland Security and the provisions of the Intelligence Reform Act of 2004.

“That order allowed us to start working with the campaign prior to a president-elect being named,” Perino said, adding that Bush wants “the next president’s team to be able to govern effectively, as quickly as possible.”

Perino said the administration wants prospective transition officials to have “a full understanding of the threat landscape.”

“The president has directed us to make sure we give the new team everything they need so they can continue to protect the country and address our economic challenges,” she added.

That's what Steve Jobs is reputed to do with his employees to deal with leaks from ultra-secretive Apple Inc.

Jobs follows up with prosecutions for violating the Nondisclosure Agreements (NDAs) he forces everyone to sign.

True enough. However never before has a Pretender-elect had so much of his past closed / sealed and other wise made unavailible for public record.

Just because something has been accepted protocol in the past, is ot IMO releveant to the person in question. Their questionable past which so many have done so much to obscure / obsficate and re-create is justification enough for the protocol to be re-examined.

It would be GREAT if they fed him some bogus data that he passed along, and could be tracked. The Mother of all Sting Ops...

Now that would be .... interesting, wouldn't it? Especially if the bogus intel could be directly and irrefurtibly be traced back to 'Bama-man Hussein.

Now the question at that point would be: Could a P(retender)OTUS be charged with high crime and treason?

kemosabe

Doooooooooom !
and this is news WHY?

... and you are asking this question because??...................

It is newsworthy , because it is unprecedented being so soon .... also read seekers post..

Also to add to others concerns mentioned...

What IF he is told all our secrets that only the president is supposed to be told about... and somehow he doesn't become president... as in not qualified and found to not be a natural born citizen or whatnot??

THEN WHAT??

We , if that happened, would have a person who LIED , to get in office, whom would then hold top secret information of national security...

Crazy to think about..... Does anyone have a clue? or are we all just guessing?
