PREP Prepping for Hand Surgery

Hand surgery on the 16th, so I’m gonna be real busy this week prepping freezer meals, etc., in anticipation of not being able to use my hand the first three days, period. Then there will be another six to eight days of down time and when everything is said and done a total of three weeks of down time.

Sooooooo lots of cooking kitchen time, and some studio prep time so I can still create and not lose my ever living mind. I also have a stack of books to keep me occupied, britbox, acorn, Netflix, prime and YouTube.

Meals are the biggest issue since we're now on the school year schedule, he gets home around 8pm. To be honest my breakfast and lunches are going to be a major problem. Sigh.

gluck to ya- I'm going nuts with just my hand n foot taped- haven't been able to go dancing, pound post, hit the punching bag, or do any other serious work outs... barely able to haul hay n feed.

Fortunately I haven't got a fella here needin fed, so I've been able to survive on the kindness of strangers, take out, and carnation instant breakfasts.

I feel fer ya- hate to be the bearer of bad news, but all 3 week periods are not the same, either LOL.

I’m seeing a hand surgeon for a consultation in a week. I guess cortisone injections aren’t a realistic strategy, so surgery will be considered. The downtime for me, given the precarious nature of society, is a big concern. So...I feel for you.

For breakfasts, what about breakfast burritos, muffins, mini quiche all frozen and popped in freezer bag that you can reheat in microwave. Those could be used for lunches also. Same for some soups in lunch size servings. Maybe even small casserole portions for lunch frozen ahead of time. Also those breakfast bowls in the freezer sections that you just add an egg to, you might be able to do a homemade version.
Will be praying for a successful surgery and a good recovery Packy.

I wish you the best. I have a feeling hand surgery could be complicated due to all the bones, muscles, nerves etc.

I had major foot surgery a month ago and will be laid up for about 3 months. The good news for you is you do not walk on your hands, so you should still be mobile, and maybe heal much sooner.

Two shoulder replacements here, total of 12 weeks with not much use of hand on one side or the other. Biggest PIA on an ongoing basis...just washing your hands! Oh, and you can't applaud either. :)

Cooking itself isn't a problem, chopping and slicing can be. Haha...cutting meat on your plate. Lifting a pan out of the oven is tough one-handed. Have a can opener you can use one-handed, and make sure ermm..personal wiping is accounted for depending on if it's your dominant hand or not.

Make sure you can buckle your seat belt, close the car door (depends on side) and manage the shifter and turn signals if you plan to drive.

Excellent point! I use my mouse and iPad iPen with my left hand, the one that's getting repaired. Will have to rethink some of these things.

Prayers it all goes well.

Uber Eats an option?

It can be, I'd rather not do take out for a variety of reasons. OC can help with dinner when he gets home from work. Sunday after surgery he can help me with some food prep for dinners so all he has to do is reheat when he gets home, things like soup, or casseroles. I'll cook some chicken to freeze. I'll probably cube it up for burritos, wraps, and a salad and I really like the idea of making breakfast burritos and freezing those, so I will do that this week and boil extra eggs.

We have home canned ground beef and beef cubes so those will be a big help for my lunches.

Do you like oat and grains. I have a couple recipes I am trying.

Carrot cake overnight oatmeal
Combine oats and almond milk in glass jar with other 7 ingredients layered on top.
Cover and put in fridge for at least 2 hours or up to 2 days. When ready to eat stir in the toppings. Add extra almond milk if desired.

Don’t let the Piss Ants get you down…
Hope things go well! Nobody needs more “things” to deal with.

My wife needs to have a procedure on her thumbs with some cartilage… she’s waiting until she’s not needed to watch the grands two or three times a week.

Prayers said. PM me or text if you need me to come up and help with anything: Tues & Thurs during the day are best. I can shop for you and bring it to your door, cut the lawn (I'll bring my mower), etc.

And I'm back! Had the brilliant idea to go through the onion basket and sure enough several needed to be used right away so those have now been diced up and placed into baggies which went into a quart freezer bag, ditto two bell peppers! We're taking a short break and then later he's going to make his burrito mix, which can then be bagged up for easy lunches for me, I love it heated up served with corn chips, and I'll make a frittata that can be cut into sections and also bagged up and frozen.

Had hand surgery, bone removal. 6 weeks for most things, 1.5 years for back to normal no pain.
pack,

Prayers your way for your surgery and healing and hubby. Remember not to overdo it.

Texican....

Not over doing it will be the hardest part. Yeah 3 to 6 weeks, if I behave myself and do what the doctor says to do is what I'm looking at recovery wise. Since I'm really wanting to get back at it in my studio I'm going to do my very best to follow his instructions.

Thanks for the offer, I think we'll have it all covered. OC mows the lawn and does the shopping and my bestie works five blocks from my house if I run into problems.

Thanks to you guys here I'm getting lots of ideas on food prep to go into the freezer and some freezer meal ideas for my lunches and breakfast. I have two large mugs, and I mean they are large, that are microwave proof so I can cook things like oatmeal, etc. in the microwave, and then carry it safely with one hand to the table, the mugs have large handles.

We spent some time discussing the first two weeks of meals, and looking at various things in our kitchen. OC can stage stuff for me the night before which will allow me to cook using only one hand. Pre-chopping the onion, bell peppers, etc., will be a HUGE help, and I have a jar of minced garlic in the pantry that I plan to use as well, and a tube of tomato paste of all things, who knew tomato paste came in a tube?

Do you eat it raw or cook it in the microwave?

Awake, in theory the whole process should take about ten minutes.
Not to pry, but sounds like carpal tunnel release. If so, recovery from these has become a piece of cake (esp. compared to terrible outcomes in the 1990s). New microsurgery methods have great outcomes. Hardly ever see them in clinic for post-op, as usually not problem
