Food Powdered Milk

packyderms_wife

Neither here nor there.
So with the discussion of the H1N5 virus being found in dairy cattle, and the potential for the FDA/USDA to demand wholesale slaughter of our dairy cattle herds, I did a thing yesterday. I ordered a container of whole fat milk Hoosier Hills Farm brand, and a non fat milk Nestle's Swiss Miss. I'll be making some bread machine recipes this coming weekend, one of which is Molasses bread, that calls for powdered milk.

I have opened both containers and the whole milk one really smells rich and like whole milk or even cream. The non fat one smells like skim milk, lol.

And of course I'll hydrate some of each to taste test, and once I decide which one we like the best I'll order a few more containers, vacuum seal and store in the freezer.

I thought there was a thread here about powdered milk but wasn't able to find it, curious as to which brands everyone here likes.

I didn't see the Nido on Amazon yesterday. What I found interesting was the number of powdered nut based milks on Amazon, wasn't looking for them they just showed up in my search for powdered milk.
I have both powder and shelf stable versions of the milks I do use for him. I just don't have much of a fondness for milk. When I was growing up there was a lot of the non-fat powdered milk. So milk just isn't one of those things I'm used to drinking or fond of.

I don't think the brand makes that much difference but taste improves to me depending on the recipe you use to reconstitute. Someone here who has written a cookbook on using preps gives a recipe for reconstituting milk that passed taste testers at our house. Can't for the life of me fill in the blanks but give me a few and I might find the answers in my "notebook"!

No worry for us, we don't drink milk. I have powdered milk and shelf stable milk for cooking, which is rare.

If I were looking for good stuff, I'd consider Nido, full fat is healthier, although I don't think it stores like the non fat does.

Trying to hang out with the cool kids.
The two best I've tasted is "Laqtia" from Spain, and "Saratoga Farms".
There is a brand called "Peak", that I thought was just awful tasting.

I don't find any difference in brands of non-fat dry milk. To make it palatable, I reconstitute it at least a day in advance of drinking it, and I add a bit of vanilla extract to it. I also give the container a good vigorous frothy shaking, just before pouring a glass.

I get my powdered dry milk for free, as I'm about the only one who seems to appreciate it at a local food bank. That and dry beans, no one else seems to want. So, those I'll take, and leave most of everything else for others.
