Misc Potato Yield

We just finished digging up the last of our potatoes. I have to say, the yield was less than half of other years.

We watered regularly. But it was very hot here and despite daily watering, it was dry. Then it rained for ages.

Bottom line is, my potatoes sucked this year. They taste fine, but I will end up having to buy potatoes. I didn't expect that considering I planted 30% more.

Ours, too, I know I posted on it somewhere here on the forum. I think I might have gotten back our seed potatoes, but barely. And, worse, the ones we did get are showing no signs of wanting to be seed potatoes...I have then in a dark, cool area, but nothing...no sprouts starting.

I bought two bags of organic potatoes last week, and they're in a cool, dark area, and thank heavens they're starting to sprout.

We've never had as bad a year with home-grown potatoes. We had similar weather, spring was a good start for us, then we went into drought...watered regularly, etc. Nope.

We've been buyng potatoes, too. And, I'm buying Bob's Red Mill instant mashed potatoes, they're actually really good with no additives. Not cheap, but good.

The only thing that did well in our garden were Juliet mini tomatoes. Dreadful gardening year.

Yes I am pretty over this bad gardening year. I told hubby we are cutting back on volume next year. We are way too old to be spending so much time and energy and so much water for such bad results.

Even my tomatoes were not so good this year. Small.

Best tater crop in several years.

Not great, but ample.

Dryish summer, but just enough moisture….

Heavy mulch, immediately after planting.

I did the heavy mulch right after planting as well. I also put straw around the plants several times as they grew. Something halfway ate the potatoes that did grow. The same thing happened to our beets. Our little one was livid because she LOVES beets.

I planted a big bed of potatoes and got nothing. Think it was just too hot. Last year I planted in tubs and an old sink and got a nice little crop.
