over the last few years I've moved a few things up closer to the house that I used to plant down in the pasture. this is the 3'rd one of these I've killed in this little raised bed patch in the last 4 years. without exception EVERY ONE of them has been buried in the grass clippings I use to mulch the beds. I have NEVER in 20 plus years come up on one of them out in the open - moving from place to place - sunning on a rock pile - on the road. this one at 22" has been the smallest.

I've shared this with you to reinforce the ABSOLUTE NECESSITY to AVOID blindly reaching into your cucumbers, squash, lettuce patch or any other planting that is low to the ground. I ALWAYS take a stick and move things around before I reach into anything. truth told he was even more concealed than you see in these pictures - I killed him first and then took these. that last small patch of his tail in the left third of the first picture and a very small portion of his back directly behind the head was all that I saw. his head was completely covered by the dried clippings which are a pretty close match for his coloring.

Thanks…your excellent warning is duly noted as I do tend to forget that stuff when I’m in another state!

Just had my 2-year-old grandson here for the first time. We walked thru the property before I took him on a ride in the side x side. He kept looking at the ground and tall growth saying, ‘Snakes? Snakes?’ Poor lil guy lives in Florida and was very snake-aware —-despite the dearth of them up here ;)

My daughter was too when I was raising her in FL, I made sure of it.

Really good eye. He was really camouflaged in those clippings.

your beans look fine, but i see you have the devil grass growing next to the brick. that stuff is nasty. if you don't want to use round up, then bleach or salt water would help.

oh, and you have a snake in there too.

I LOVE snake threads. I hate the sons o bitches though. I live in rich rattler country and want to shoot one just for the notoriety. I have a tail with 8 buttons in my jewelry box.

Glad you found the spawn of Satan in your beans Raggedy. Now BBQ that sucker!

Until last year, we let our chickens and turkeys free range. We didn't have a snake problem. This year they are everywhere except near the house, and I think our cats keep them away.
