Does anyone have and use a pea sheller. I have seen them for sale and wondered if they are worth buying. If you have one; what brand and do you like it?

The only one I ever saw that worked was a homemade one an Amish guy cobbled together from a old wringer and a half horsepower motor! It would shell a 5 gallon pail of peas in about 5 minutes!

But... My observation has been they need fairly mature peas to shell well... we prefer baby peas.

Danny from Deep South Homestead on Youtube a couple days ago put up a video talking about pea shellers. I haven't watched it yet - runtime 19:30. He uses it for purple-hull peas if that makes a difference to ya. He has another one from about 5 days before this one, also about peas.

I have that same pea shelter, does a fantastic job.
Have had mine about 15 years and have shelled many bushels of peas. We used it, my son came and shelled his and some of ou neighbors used it.
Never had a problem have not replaced any parts only had to tweak the tiller adjustments once. Made by Tailor mfg co.

Hope this link works.
It has more than doubled in price since I purchased mine.

If you want something a little cheaper:

I have their smaller model I bought at a yard sale for $3 still in the box. It is perfect for me and I've shelled a ton of purple hulls with it over the years. You can hook a drill up to it but I just crank it by hand. I grow the vining variety that gives you peas all summer long but at a slower pace so I shell every two or three days. If you have a truck patch, you might want something bigger. I'm too busy to shell by hand.

I prefer to let my peas set a day or two before shelling but if they get too dry, shellers won't work. If you can find an old wringer for laundry, they work too. I have one displayed in my big bathroom along with my rub board collection. Daddy was always trying to get me to use it to shell peas with but it's too pretty for that. I may need it for laundry some day.
