[OT-ish] Reading a Koontz novel--"The Taking"

OK...I'm in Part 3 of a Dean Koontz novel from a few years back called "The Taking". Your typical alien invasion novel. But...it has a cool "prepper" angle to it. Just wanted to share that...

um...maybe not...:groucho:

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ha!!!!!!! Well, I'm getting through the very surreal "tavern scene", and a German Shepherd just brought Molly a rose. It's gone from some very familiar prep thematic ideas to....well....strangeness.

Loving it so far though...

NOW DON'T RUIN IT FOR ME!!!!!!

you said this is a 'part three' novel? what are the first two parts then?

I have read some book by Koontz and like him a lot, although I have to admit haven't read everything he has written..

I don't like the way Koontz writes. I dunno. I hear good things about his books and I read one and even though I don't like it the story is good and I have to finish it. I just don't like his "voice" or something. I've read 3 trying to give him a chance and probably won't do it again. And that really breaks my heart because I love the genre.

Great Story!

It really leaves you guessing until the end. A fresh way to look at the "event".

I love me some Koontz. Read every single book he's written. :)

Watchers is probably my favorite book ever. A dang fine story, that one is.

I LOVE Koontz. I bought "The Taking" at the airport before we got on the plane for Utah to visit my brother-in-law a month ago. I hadn't read him in awhile. The "end of the world" story line caught my eye. After getting into the book, I thought, "man, this is cool"! aliens (demons), end of the world scenario's and wonderful hero's. I couldn't put it down. After reading it I turned into a Koontz "junkie". Another one he's written that has the ufo/alien element to it is "One Door Away From Heaven"....awesome story. I LOVE the way he can plumb the depths of humanity...in all it's good and bad. His stories scare the "bejeesus" outa me, make me cry sometimes and crack me up, too. While reading these two above mentioned books, I started to get the impression Koontz may be a little bit of a cospiracy theorist himself. He has quite an imagination. I'm a "readaholic" as it is, and now I can't seem to get my rearend in bed before 2 am cause I can't put the book down  It makes for a hard time getting up in the morning. I wonder if Koontz has ever found TB2K? It wouldn't surprise me :D

Most fiction it seems doesn't get good until after page 150 or 200, when you really know the characters and become invested in the story. My compliment/criticism of Koontz would be that imho the first 200 pages of his books in general rock, and totally grip me, but then the style of bizarre takes over to the degree that it actually becomes highly predictable for me, and so I end up disappointed. But that's jmho. I wish he'd write the end as well as he does the beginning, like for instance Stephen King. I enjoy a book that leaves me wondering for days about the characters years down their roads, and Koontz instead wraps it up in so many layers of dull completion that the characters don't haunt me like do other writers.

Strangely I react to his writing in the same way as you! The "voice" is just slightly wrong whereas Steven King usually nails it.

Sorry to confuse the situation--he calls his chapters in this particular book "parts". So Part 3 was in essence Chapter 3. Sorry about that.

The only multi-part books by Koontz that I'm aware of is his Frankenstein series (1 and 2), and then Odd Thomas (and the new Thomas book).

I know this is thread drift, but as for the "voice" of his writing, yes, if you are a King fan, which I inevitably compare Koontz to because I was reading King WAY before I found Koontz, it is different, and yes, annoying at times. To me, King has a special bond with being able to connect me as the reader with the kids in his books. Koontz has a way, if you can stand it, to connect with the horrors and thoughts of a person.

And I finished this book in record time--started it at the Fire Dept at 1400hrs yesterday, and finished it by 2300hrs with lots and lots of interruptions. Good story. Kind of a blah ending.

Ah Watchers, isn't that the one with the Golden Retriever named Einstein?

If so, that was one of the best of the best for Koontz. I really fell in love with that dog and it made me want a Goldie, never got one though.

I tried reading Tic-Tok and could never get into that particular book.

I have to recommend "One Door Away From Heaven".

I'll have you know based on YOUR recommendation, I went out and bought it. GREAT story so far. Getting introduced to that wise-acre 12 year old girl. WOW!! If a 12 year old ever talked that way to me, I'd think she was possessed by a 45 year old. Some funny lines.

But looking forward to seeing who this other little kid is, who's chasing the little kid, and what's that all about. And how the Senator fits into this. And Noah. VERY good.

Thanks Cardinal! You're the best!!!

:rs: So glad you like it. It gets very intense near the end.

I think this is my problem (the King connection). Just finished the second "Odd Thomas" book. I liked it, but wish I had pulled the 1st book rather than the 2nd. I bought it only because it was at a library sale and it was relatively new. I'm going to check out "One Door" sounds good. Koontz IS a good story teller, but at times I think "I can do better than this!" (Yes, if that's so, then why don't I do it then!? But it's like he gets lazy at times or something.)

It is my considered opinion that no one -- no one -- can write a chase like Koontz. Almost all of his books feature them, and they're always intense as all get out.
