Pests/Ctrl Organic Fire Ant Killer

This unusually hot December has brought the fire ants in my garden back to the surface and has given me a chance to test an organic solution, orange citrus oil.

It really works. I bought some orange citrus oil from Amazon. I mixed a few ounces in a bucket with about two gallons of water mixed it up, poked holes in the mound, and poured it on. Big angry fire ants and they are dead.

I watched a guy on youtube and he said to use a weak solution around plants.

its 2 below here, 19 below wind chill. Im glad it gets so cold here, that we dont have the bug problems you have in the warmer areas, the hard freeze here, can go down as deep as 4 ft or more,

we do get cold. but you learn to deal with it , loong ago, the indians learned how to live in this, guess its not to bad,

wonder if that stuff will work on other bugs?

Thank you! We will try. Fire ants are a REAL prob here everywhere and if you have small animals or children it really is a problem!

I bought some years ago and never tried it. Thanks for that!! We're finding the mound treatments aren't working as well anymore. Lately I've been heating up water in a tea kettle dousing the mound, that works pretty darn good....but I can't do that on 30 acres. I'll give the citrus a try (probably need a new one, though).

Wow! I cannot even imagine. If you do have bugs they must be a hardy lot. :)

The stuff is pricey for me anyway, but I think you can make some out of orange peels. My Dad raised cattle and he lost a calf to fire ants once, just horrible.

It is darn pricey, that's for sure....going with homemade would likely be an effort. Oh gosh, that must have been truly awful...we still have a small herd, retired cows now and no longer breeding, but those ants always had me worrying (along with black-headed vultures).
