Misc opinions needed: labeling Tattler lidded jars

I am just now trying my Tattler lids for the first time. With metal lids, I have always written on the lid with a sharpie the contents and date canned. Now I'm trying to decide how to label the Tattler jars. Permanent marker doesn't seem like the best plan on re-usable lids.

What do you do?

I don't write on my reusable lids. Instead, I use a black sharpie and write the contents on the jar. I separate the the jars into canning jar boxes by their contents and also label the box with a sticky note denoting what's in the jars.

There are food prep labels you can purchase that dissolve in water…. If you know someone that has a Sysco account they can order you a roll or two .. they are a tad costly, but there are good many in each roll. IIRC they run approx $10 a roll ??

I print labels on my printer. The newer labels are a bit easier to remove than they used to be... just use very hot water, and they'll soak right off. But whatever you do, don't out them in the dishwasher with the labels on! They'll bake on, and removing them is a bear.

If you DO get baked on labels, remove as much of the paper as you can, then use orange essential oil to dissolve the rest.

I bought a roll of the labels that dissolve in water like already mentioned from Amazon a few years ago to use on freezer container, they would work for the lids.

One other tip.. I date my milk jars in the fridge with a dry erase marker. Once dry, it takes pretty serious rubbing to remove (the dry erase boards are treated to allow for easy erasure). I haven't tried it on tattler lids, but if your contents are fairly light colored, you could write on the jars...

I was going to buy the dissolvable labels on Amazon today. Until I realized that with the changes going on, I really need to put a full nutrition label on my jars for a year or two. Back to Amazon to find larger, printable, labels.

I may have to try the dissolve-type labels. Canned a lot this season and plan to empty my freezer over the next few months; plan to use Tattlers on about half. I’ve used freezer tape on the jars that have the pretty, special Christmasy lids that Kerr has out sometimes, but they would sure look better with real labels!

Oh my life has changed since this. For now, and probably the next few years, I need nutrition info on the jars. So dissolvable labels are out. Back to scrubbing off labels, only larger ones now.
