Got an issue.

ALL of my Strike Anywhere matches have succumbed to the moisture of life at 50-80% humidity.

They WILL light if a flame is introduced to the tip, but you can watch the glow progress through the tip until it FINALLY bursts into flame.

Is there ANY way of regenerating these back to function?? Perhaps spreading them on a couple of shelves in the dehydrator and running it on high for 24 hours?? or is there a chem treatment for the tips??

I contemplated that same problem with humidity, and vacuum sealed a few boxes a few years back upon purchase. If you find any, you might think about doing the same.

Red Bird Strike anywhere matches are supposed to be a lot better than the dimond green tipped ones. The catch is it's a canadian brand so you have to go to canada to get some.

This too shall pass.
Also, if you look in the camping section, you should be able to find 'waterproof' matches -- I don't know how they stand up to prolonged high humidity (I really ought to test the ones I have in my preps), but they are supposed to light even in rain or after having been immersed in water.

I should open the tins I have matches stored in and make sure they are still good. They've been stored for quite some time in a tight lidded popcorn tin. Some matches I had out in the basement were absolutely ruined but they were just in the cardboard box they came in sitting out in the open.

I checked my matches in the tin and all were fine. Forgot I also have a couple of BIC lighters leftover from when dh smoked so 20 or so years old. I'm keeping them, but due to my arthritic hands I can no longer spin the wheel to light them. Figure they will be a good trade item post SHTF.

I've heard that strike anywhere matches need to be carefully stored because fires have been started from mice chewing on them. Seems when I was a kid strike anywhere were about the only game in town. Smokers (and everyone smoked back then) used the folding paper match books more often than not. I can recall my grandad striking a match on the metal zipper in his jeans to light his pipe. Zippo lighters were also used by some.

I haven't checked for years but Walmart used to have the strike anywhere matches in the sporting/camping goods section.

As an aside, Bic lighters do not keep a long time where humidity is high...the "flint" compound deteriorates into a worthless powder. I don't bother with keeping more than one or two on hand anymore.

These are about $7 each in the camping aisle at Walmart. Windproof, waterproof, stormproof, will relight after being submerged in water. Every time I get near that area of the store and they come to mind, I grab another - got them coming out of my ears now.

I'm a lazy prepper...lol...we went way old school...flint n steel in 5 very full ditty bags...along with charcloth inside a powder horn...as well as a reg powder horn...gettin fire n cookin isn't something I worry about...

Take a strip of gauze. Melt some wax, dip match heads in it. Open gauze strip, lay matches in it. Pour wax over gauze. When using, cut off some gauze for tinder, pull out matches. You can figure it out from here.

"Cartwright Strike Anywhere" brand of kitchen matches work much better than the Diamond brand for striking anywhere.
