Obama’s Dress Code for Sweetie

According to Politico’s Carrie Budoff Brown, who is accompanying Obama on his trip to the Middle East and Europe, Obama’s campaign sent out a “dress code” that especially targeted female reporters as to the appropriate attire while traveling in Israel and Jordan.Obama press told to cover up, not wear green. No green. That is the color of Hamas. Also no nail polish, a limited amount of jewelry, covered shoulders and arms, closed-toed shoes, and stockings for women. (Do they make stockings anymore?) Women must also be prepared to cover their heads.

The one and only...
Really that's no different than warning a reporter not to wear a certain color in an opposing gangs area in any city in the US. There are cultural differences that people should be aware of when traveling overseas and it's generally a good idea to know them.

I don't think this is any kind of precurser for Taliban America.

Really Far stretch..come on now.

1) I have absolutely no trouble with this. Therefore:

2) Absolutely no head scarves or burkas worn in the USA.

I am a no-double-standards man.

My church is dong an outreach this weekend.

WE were told NOT TO WEAR RED to the park....

Gang colors.....

Yet ANOTHER small piece of American freedom is sacrificed on the altar of political correctness . . .

Good job -- let the hooligans take over the neighborhood and dictate what the decent law-abiding citizens can and cannot wear in public.

This is pretty much standard advice for Western women working in the Middle East. The exceptions are when women are in "charge" of men like on some archeology digs. Then my old professor told us to "wear pants and be prepared to be treated as honorary men."

What makes these requests sound extreem, is in addition to the usual edicts (which are not all that much different from what women used to wear to a Catholic Mass or papal audiance) you've got the stuff about not wearing green (the color of Islam is also green), no open toed shoes, stockings (why?) etc.

The major thing that offends in SOME but NOT ALL Islamic countries is a women without a least a simple head scarf. It is understood that most Western/Christian women will have smaller and less obtrusive scarves than the local women, even in Afganistan. When I lived in South America, nearly 30 years ago, it was considered indecent for a women to enter a Catholic church, even as a tourist, without a similar head covering being worn.

There is a fine line between showing respect and being cowed into submission, in this case I think the campaigne is just trying to make sure that no issues come up during the trip. I do think they went a bit more overboard than was needed, but the basic no bare shoulders plus simple head scarf is worn by many Christian groups as well as Islamic ones. Some of them (like my United Pentacostal friend in college) live in the US.

While Hamas has green in their flag, it is not "the color of Hamas".

Green is the color of ISLAM.

"The color green has a special place in Islam. It is used in the decoration of mosques, the bindings of Qur'ans, the silken covers for the graves of Sufi saints, and in the flags of various Muslim countries. Green has been associated with Islam for many centuries. It is not clear why this is so. Some say green was Muhammad’s favorite color and that he wore a green cloak and turban. Others believe that it symbolizes nature and life, hence the physical manifestation of God. In the Qur'an (Surah 18:31), it is said that the inhabitants of paradise will wear green garments of fine silk. While the reference to the Qur'an is verifiable, it is not clear if other explanations are reliable or mere folklore. Regardless of its origins, the color green has been considered especially Islamic for centuries. Crusaders avoided using any green in their coats of arms, so that they could not possibly be mistaken for their Muslim opponents in the heat of battle."

To be more specific, green is the symbolic color of CONQUEST in Islam...

GREEN IS THE COLOR OF CONQUEST IN ISLAM - WHY THEN ARE WE LIGHTING THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING GREEN IN CELEBRATION OF EID?
http://ibloga.blogspot.com/2007/10/green-is-color-of-conquest-in-islam-why.html

"Tomorrow, in celebration of the Islamic holiday of Eid, we Americans are going to light up the Empire State Building green.

What does this mean?

Eid is, itself, the culmination of Ramadan, which is a celebration of a war, which established Islam as a power in this world.

According to the Center to Combat Terrorism at West Point, Green is the color of an Islamic land, or, in other words, Dar al-Islam; the land claimed for Allah.

Why are we doing this? Is there any good reason other than creeping dhimmitude combined with the astounding ignorance of our public officials?"

Once again the Obamatrons display their ignorance.

I tend to agree. If someone is going to a foreign country, trying not to offend your host country is just good manners. We in general don't like it when foreigners come over here and demand that we accomodate them, why should we be so rude as to not comply with something as simple as what was requested?
I too remember when ladies wore hats and gloves to church and in public as good manners.
