I plan on ordering some of those nuke tablets, but I was wondering about whether they were ok to give to pets and livestock?

The ones I have give dosages for cats, dogs, goats. Check the label before ordering if at all possible.

The chances of any animal living long enough to develop the type of cancer that this is supposed to help prevent are awfully low...

It does NOTHING to prevent radiation poisoning of any kind. It *only* helps prevent the thyroid from taking up radioactive iodine.

Although I love my pets, this seems to be more of a "feel good" measure for the owners than to have any practical basis.

And remember that many livestock feeds already have iodine supplementation added (so much so that the FDA started limiting how much could be added to any one feed- high iodine levels were showing up in the milk from dairy cows).

If it was me, I'd spend the money instead on two items- muzzles for any animal which might go outdoors at any time after a radioactive event (for example, if you think you'd be taking one of your dogs on a quick round of inspection, for your own protection) and booties for those same animals.

The booties would give you a chance to remove most of the contamination at the door outside, and the muzzle would keep them from licking themselves clean until after you'd had a chance to wipe them down thoroughly.

FWIW
